Introduction to Hydrogen Energy
Hydrogen is the simplest element. An atom of hydrogen consists of only one proton and one electron. It's also the most plentiful element in the universe. Despite its simplicity and abundance, hydrogen doesn't occur naturally as a gas on the Earth - it's always combined with other elements. Water, for example, is a combination of hydrogen and oxygen (H O). Hydrogen is also found in many organic compounds, notably the hydrocarbons that make up many of our fuels, such as gasoline, natural gas, methanol, and propane. Hydrogen can be separated from hydrocarbons through the application of heat - a process known as reforming . Currently, most hydrogen is made this way from natural gas. An electrical current can also be used to separate water into its components of oxygen and hydrogen. This process is known as electrolysis . Some algae and bacteria, using sunlight as their energy source, even give off hydrogen under certain conditions.

Fuel Cells
Fuel cells will play an important role in securing our energy future by providing efficient, environmentally friendly electrical energy while extending the capacity of our fossil fuel supply. However, fuel cells will only come into broad public use when their cost is significantly reduced. And that can't happen until they are available for a wide variety of applications. The Solid State Energy Conversion Alliance's (SECA) goal is to create a solid oxide fuel cell (3-10 kW) that can be mass produced in modular form. Used individually or in clusters, depending upon the amount of energy required, these fuel cells will be able to power a broad array of applications. As the number of uses for fuel cells grows, per unit costs can be reduced as high volume production technologies are brought to bear.

Megan Burger would rather use her education to create cutting-edge inventions with important uses. That's exactly what the 18-year-old has done. At this year's Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix, Ariz., the high school senior from The Woodlands, Texas, was one of several students who investigated fuel-cell technology. Her work might eventually help make Earth a cleaner place. Fuel cells power this car, which runs on hydrogen. U.S. Department of Energy Fuel cells generate electricity through chemical reactions between hydrogen and oxygen. The process is an efficient way to produce energy with no toxic waste. Fuel cells already power spacecraft and a few cars . In the future, experts suggest, they will also be used in homes and other buildings and even in devices such as laptops and cell phones. The technology has "the potential to transform the [U.S.] energy industry," Megan says.

Connecticut Clean Energy Fund Announces 2003 Fuel Cell Request for Proposals
January 7, 2004
Following on its first two successful fuel cell solicitations, the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF) has released its third annual Request for Proposals (RFP) for near-commercial fuel cell demonstration projects. The CCEF has allocated up to $4 million for the 2003 RFP. This year’s solicitation seeks notable fuel cell demonstration projects that advance the state of technology and accelerate the pace of commercialization of fuel cells.
“Fuel cells continue to be a fundamental piece of the renewable picture in Connecticut” says Arthur H. Diedrick, CCEF Chairman. “The importance of fuel cells as a clean, reliable distributed energy source was underscored by this summer’s massive blackout. While all the lights were out in New York City, the Central Park police station continued to function because it is independently powered by a fuel cell.” adds Diedrick.
Around the world, exciting new developments are being made in fuel cell technology. Through its 2003 RFP, CCEF intends to provide an opportunity for these promising technologies to be demonstrated and tested here in the state. Showcasing these next generation fuel cell products in Connecticut adds to the state’s already vibrant fuel cell industry.

A fuel cell designed by researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign can operate without a solid membrane separating fuel and oxidant, and functions with alkaline chemistry in addition to the more common acidic chemistry. Like a battery, a fuel cell changes chemical energy into electrical energy. While most fuel cells employ a physical barrier to separate the fuel and oxidant, the microfluidic fuel cell developed at Illinois utilizes multi-stream laminar flow to accomplish the same task. "The system uses a Y-shaped microfluidic channel in which two liquid streams containing fuel and oxidant merge and flow between catalyst-covered electrodes without mixing," said Paul Kenis, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and a researcher at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. Fluids flowing through channels of microscale dimensions behave differently than fluids flowing through the much larger pipes found in home plumbing systems, Kenis said.

    What Is A Fuel Cell?
In principle, a fuel cell operates like a battery. Unlike a battery, a fuel cell does not run down or require recharging. It will produce energy in the form of electricity and heat as long as fuel is supplied. A fuel cell consists of two electrodes sandwiched around an electrolyte. Oxygen passes over one electrode and hydrogen over the other, generating electricity, water and heat. Hydrogen fuel is fed into the "anode" of the fuel cell. Oxygen (or air) enters the fuel cell through the cathode. Encouraged by a catalyst, the hydrogen atom splits into a proton and an electron, which take different paths to the cathode. The proton passes through the electrolyte. The electrons create a separate current that can be utilized before they return to the cathode, to be reunited with the hydrogen and oxygen in a molecule of water.

Overview Engineers and environmentalists have long dreamed of being able to obtain the benefits of clean electric power without pollution-producing engines or heavy batteries. Solar panels and wind farms are familiar images of alternative energy technologies. While they are effective sources of electrical energy, there are problems with the stability of their energy source as, for example, on a cloudy or windless day. Their applications are somewhat limited due to lack of portability; a windmill is not much help to the power plant of a diesel truck, a solar panel cannot provide power at night, etc. In 1962 a revolution in energy research occurred. Scientists at Westinghouse Electric Corporation (now Siemens Westinghouse) demonstrated for the first time the feasibility of extracting electricity from a device they called a "solid electrolyte fuel cell" [ Weissbart ]. Since then there has been an intense research and development effort to develop the alternative energy technology known as fuel cells. Now, as energy issues are at the forefront of current events, fuel cell technology is ripening and on the verge of being ready for large scale commercial implementation.

  • The fuel cell system uses raw refuse from the exhibition site for methane fermentation. Hydrogen produced from the methane is then used in fuel cells to generate electricity. The generated power is supplied to all rooms of Japan Pavilion Nagakute and to some facilities of Common 5. These facilities are expected to consume approximately 2,200 kW, two-thirds of which will be supplied by the fuel cell power generation system. As you look down from the Global Loop near the West Gate, you will see a facility resembling a chemical plant beside the Common 5 building. This is the New Energy Plant, operating primarily on fuel cell power generation. In addition to the fuel cell power generation equipment, the plant contains a methane fermentation system for fuel production, high-temperature gasification system (to gasify woody materials at high temperature), a NaS battery energy storage system to store generated electricity, and the like. Compared with power generation by burning fossil fuels, fuel cell power generation is highly efficient, produces low noise/vibration, and emits only a small amount of carbon dioxide and other chemicals. It is an environmentally friendly technology of the near future.
