[Third Orbit's Fuel Cell Activities]

THE MICRO-CHIP OF THE ENERGY INDUSTRY
Fuel cells are “new” devices used to produce electrical power. After 160 years of development, they are becoming commercially available and are beginning to receive a large amount of public attention. This web site will provide a brief introduction into fuel cells, and describe what they are, what they can do, why they're important, what their commercial implications are, and what Third Orbit Power Systems is doing with fuel cells.
What is a fuel cell? Because fuel cells produce power without combustion, they are considerably more efficient than their internal combustion engine counterparts. Gasoline engines in automobiles are approximately 13 to 25 percent efficient. Amazingly, 75 to 87 percent of the gasoline you purchase does not participate in moving your automobile. A fuel cell attached to an electric motor can be in excess of 40 percent efficient, and fuel cells that can be used in automobiles and other vehicles are being produced with efficiencies of 45 to 58 percent. What can fuel cells do?

Fuel Cells
Inside most fuel cells, hydrogen from a fuel tank and oxygen from the air combine to produce electricity and warm water. Fuel is not burned in this simple electrochemical process (see: How Do Fuel Cells Work?
Though fuel cells have been widely publicized in recent years, they are not new: the first one debuted in 1839. Fuel cells powered the 1960's Gemini spacecraft, continue to power the Space Shuttle, and have been used by NASA on many other space missions. Today, all major auto companies have fuel-cell powered vehicles in the works, and a nascent fuel cell industry is growing rapidly. While their operation is simple, fuel cells have historically been expensive to make. Until a few years ago these devices had to be assembled one at a time in the hands of Ph.D.s. Yet extensive research and development over the past few decades have promised the widespread use of fuel cells in the near future. Fuel cells still cost more today than conventional power sources. But more and more companies are choosing fuel cells for their dependability, fuel efficiency, and clean operation. To learn more about fuel cells as distributed energy resources, download

Home About Us Our Mission Fuel Cell Technology ... Contact Us Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cells The solution to the most urgent crises facing us today....energy and pollution! At the current rate of usage, taking into consideration population increases and higher consumption of energy by developing countries, oil resources, natural gas and uranium will be depleted within a few decades. As for coal, it may take two centuries or so. Hydrogen has been considered for many years as a likely and eventual substitute for oil, gas, coal and uranium. It is the most abundant element in the universe. Buildings and vehicles are the great consumers of energy. Hydrogen energy was not practical for application to buildings and vehicles. The development of the fuel cell, which is now in its initial commercialization phase has changed all of that. The fuel cell can be packaged in all kinds of sizes and the combination of Hydrogen Energy and the Fuel Cell is the practical, feasible, and marketable solution to the energy crisis. How Do Fuel Cells Work?
The following description details the internal workings of a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell, favored for widespread use because of its low-temperature operation, relative tolerance for impurities, and high power-density. According to U.S. Department of Energy, "these cells are the best candidates for light-duty vehicles, for buildings, and much smaller applications." Please visit Types of Fuel Cells to learn more about other configurations.

Hydrogen gas (H ) flows into channels on one face of the cell and migrates through that electrode, while the same occurs with oxygen gas (O , typically from the ambient air) along the opposite electrode. Spurred by a catalyst, favorable chemistry causes the hydrogen to oxidize into hydrogen protons and give up its electrons to the neighboring electrode, which thereby becomes the anode. This buildup of negative charge then follows the path of least resistance via the external circuit to the other electrode (the cathode). It is this flow of electrons through a circuit that creates electricity.

High Temperature Fuel Cell
is a fascinating device: without a moving component it transforms fuel into power and heat. An electrochemical process and a temperature of 600-900 are the basics of this effect. Hydrogen needn’t to be produced externally. The cell is continuously generating the demanded amount inside. This direct, highly efficient and zero-emission process carries the hopes for a resources-saving future power supply.
EBZ is developing a Modular Energy Supply System integrating the SOFC High Temperature Fuel Cell. It's flexibly applicable in residential and industrial heating installations or in power generation units and as large vehicle stand-by power supply. The system is providing power and heat, meeting your demands. What’s special about? Without any comfort restriction, users consume up to 25% less primary energy and reduce CO emissions up to 50%.
The principles of the SOFC technology were already known for a long time. Intensive fundamental research was essential to develop suitable materials, which can permanently resist the severe operating conditions. Now it’s the final task to make fuel cells robust and reliable. Future high volume fabrication will meet the cost requirements to bring the SOFC technology on the market.

Fundamental Fuel Cell Types Fuel Cell Stacks A fuel cell is an electrochemical device. With high efficiency it can convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy without combustion and without moving parts. A fuel cell is in fact the best known way to convert the chemical energy of fuel into electricity. Historically, fuel cells are no new invention; the first fuel cell was invented by Sir William Robert Grove back in 1839. The first real fuel cell application was in the Apollo and Gemini space program and the design used was based on an invention made by Francis T. Bacon. An Alkali Fuel Cell (AFC) was used. A fuel cell basically consists of two electrodes and one electrolyte. The operating principle is known from the electrolysis of water and a fuel cell is fundamentally the opposite of electrolysis. Utilizing electrolysis, water is split into oxygen at the anode and hydrogen at the cathode. In a fuel cell the reaction is opposite and hydrogen is reduced at the anode and oxidized at the cathode and from that process heat, electricity and pure water are released. Next page

'Cool' fuel cells could revolutionize Earth's energy resources
UH researchers developing efficient, practical power source alternatives
Imagine a power source so small, yet so efficient, that it could make cumbersome power plants virtually obsolete while lowering your electric bill. A breakthrough in thin film solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is currently being refined in labs at the University of Houston, making that dream a reality. Originating from research at UH's Texas Center for Superconductivity and Advanced Materials (TcSAM), these SOFCs of the "thin film" variety are both efficient and compact. With potential ranging from use in the government in matters of defense and space travel to driving forces in the consumer market that include computers and electricity, this breakthrough carries tremendous impact. "By using materials science concepts developed in our superconductivity research and materials processing concepts in our semiconductor research, we are able to reduce operating temperatures, eliminate steps and use less expensive materials that will potentially revolutionize from where we derive electrical energy," said Alex Ignatiev, director of TcSAM and distinguished university professor of physics, chemistry and electrical and computer engineering at UH. "While there are a number of fuel cell research programs at the university, ours focuses on the application of thin film science and technology to gain the benefits of efficiency and low cost."

In Brief : Fact Sheet
Fuel Cells
Hydrogen fuel cells are one of several alternative energy technologies that can help curb air pollution and global warming.
Fuel cells can convert fuel into electricity more efficiently than power plants or internal combustion engines do, and produce no toxic emissions or noise. As a nonpolluting energy source for everything from utility power to automobiles to cell phones, the fuel cell is one of the most versatile clean energy technologies under development today. Fuel cells are already used in hundreds of hospitals, office buildings and industrial facilities, and auto manufacturers are taking a keen interest in using them to power the "Zero Emissions Vehicles" they are required to produce by California and a number of other states.
How Fuel Cells Work Like a battery, a fuel cell produces electricity through chemical interactions. The chemicals in this case are very simple hydrogen and oxygen. But unlike batteries, fuel cells do not run down. As long as the "fuel" and air are supplied to the cell, it will keep producing electricity. The oxygen needed by a fuel cell is usually obtained from air, and for the time being, the hydrogen comes from hydrogen-rich fuels such as natural gas. The goal is to eventually get the hydrogen from plants or water, which both have lots of hydrogen in them.
Where Fuel Cells Can Be Used First used in the U.S. space program in the 1960s, fuel cells can now be found in many ordinary applications, although they are still not widespread. While they are expensive, they have low operating costs and produce very reliable power, making them a good investment for high-tech facilities such as hospitals and computer labs that must ensure an uninterrupted power supply. And because fuel cells are silent and clean, they can be used in residential neighborhoods where noise and pollution would make traditional generators unattractive. What's more, the costs are coming down as they are manufactured in greater numbers. There remain challenges to making a fuel cell work well in a vehicle, but using fuel cells in even a fraction of the millions of cars sold each year could profoundly lower the cost of manufacturing such vehicles.

It is shaped like a narrow box and weighs a little over 100 kilograms. This small device is one of the most important items on board the shuttle. However, unlike batteries, fuels cells don't store electrical energy. Instead, they convert energy from chemical reactions directly into electrical energy ( Box 1 Generating electricity from coal In Australia, most of our electricity comes from burning coal. Transforming coal into electricity requires a number of steps. At each step, energy is lost from the system. Additional energy is lost during transmission along power lines. By the time electricity reaches your power point, less than 30 per cent of the energy originally stored in the coal is available to you. Burning coal to generate electricity is not only inefficient, it is also polluting. It releases oxides of sulfur and nitrogen, contributing to smog and acid rain. (These emissions are more of a problem overseas than in Australia where the coal is relatively clean.) Burning coal also produces large amounts of carbon dioxide, a

A British company today unveiled ENV, the world’s first purpose-built, fuel-cell motorbike - ahead of any of the world’s leading automotive companies. The ENV bike is the creation of Intelligent Energy, a British energy solutions company, whose board includes Chairman Sir John Jennings, the former Chairman of Shell Transport and Trading. The ENV (Emissions Neutral Vehicle) bike was designed to Intelligent Energy’s brief by a British team, led by multi-award-winning designers Seymourpowell. The ENV bike is fully-functioning and has been engineered and purpose-built (based around Intelligent Energy’s CORE fuel cell) from the ground up, demonstrating the real, everyday applicability of fuel cell technology. The CORE, which is completely detachable from the bike, is a radically compact and efficient fuel cell, capable of powering anything from a motorboat to a small domestic property. The ENV bike is different. It offers an exhilarating glimpse of what can be achieved: a great-looking and exciting fuel-cell motorbike. ‘In the none-too-distant future’, commented Intelligent Energy CEO Harry Bradbury, ‘ people will be able to use a bike like ENV to leave work in an urban environment, drive to the countryside, detach the CORE and attach it to another vehicle, such as a motorboat, before going on to power a log cabin with the very same fuel cell, which could then be re-charged from a mini hydrogen creator, the size of a shoebox.’
