  • FUEL CELL BASICS COMMERCIALISATION RELATED TECHNOLOGY
    Welcome to Fuel Cell Knowledge
This site presents information on the research, development and adoption of Sustainable Energy Systems based on fuel cells. The site focuses on Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs), which is the author's field of study.
The site is designed to present the growing body of knowledge on fuel cells efficiently and coherently. Introductory material is included under the "Fuel Cell Basics" menu (above), and there is plenty available elsewhere
There has been a tendency to consider fuel cell technologies as 'the solution' to problems with existing energy technologies, when in fact they are only one component of a sustainable energy system. This attitude has led to two problems: the marketing of fuel cells for applications for which they are not the most sustainable solution; and the public misunderstanding of the need for sustainable hydrogen (energy) production in order to realise the potential of fuel cells. To this end, the "Related Technogies" and "Commercialisation" menus aim to place fuel cells in a wider context.

New Mexico Economic Development Department August 25, 2005 Hydrogen Business Council Announces Annual Hydrogen Energy Conference In Santa Fe On February 23-24, 2006 The New Mexico Hydrogen Business Council (NMHBC) is a non-profit trade association dedicated to the success of its members, supporting New Mexico as a venue for hydrogen energy and the development of hydrogen markets worldwide. The NMHBC successfully inaugurated the hydrogen implementers' conference in 2005 with the support of its members and the hydrogen community. This year's conference includes invited speakers from the State Government, U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Fuel Cell Council, the National Hydrogen Association, the U.S. Energy Association, and several important leaders in the hydrogen energy industry. Regional cooperation will be a central theme of this year's program. The NMHBC gratefully acknowledges the support of the Economic Development Department of the State of New Mexico. "Governor Richardson is a strong proponent of hydrogen energy and he is very knowledgeable about hydrogen having served as U.S. Secretary of Energy" stated David Haberman, President of the Council. "New Mexico is very fortunate in the leadership role that its Congressional Delegation plays in the national energy policy and the recent energy bill shepherded by Senators' Domenici and Bingaman provided significant resources to implementing the hydrogen vision," Haberman emphasized.

Vendors While the concept of fuel cells has been around for more than 100 years, the first practical fuel cells were developed for the U.S. space program in the 1960s. The space program required an efficient, reliable, and compact energy source for the Gemini and Apollo spacecraft, and the fuel cell was a good fit. Today, NASA continues its reliance on fuel cells to power space shuttle vehicles. Because of technology improvements in recent years and significant investment by auto companies, utilities, NASA , and the military, fuel cells are now expected to have applications for distributed power generation within the next few years.

FUEL CELLS How the PEM Fuel Cell Works
A PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane, also called Polymer Electrolyte Membrane) fuel cell uses a simple chemical reaction to combine hydrogen and oxygen into water, producing electric current in the process. For those interested in the chemistry, it works something like electrolysis in reverse:
1. At the anode, hydrogen molecules give up electrons, forming hydrogen ions. This process is made possible by the platinum catalyst.
2. The proton exchange membrane allows protons to flow through, but not electrons. As a result, the hydrogen ions flow directly through the proton exchange membrane to the cathode, while the electrons flow through an external circuit.
3. As they travel to the cathode through the external circuit, the electrons produce electrical current. This current can perform useful work by powering any electrical device (such as an electric motor or a light bulb).
4. At the cathode, the electrons and hydrogen ions combine with oxygen to form water.

For other uses, see Fuel cell (disambiguation)
Fuel cells run on hydrogen, a fuel which can be made by any individual or nation which has a supply of water and electricity. A fuel cell is an electrochemical device similar to a battery , but differing from the latter in that it is designed for continuous replenishment of the reactants consumed; i.e. it produces electricity from an external fuel supply as opposed to the limited internal energy storage capacity of a battery. Additionally, the electrodes within a battery react and change as a battery is charged or discharged, whereas a fuel cell's electrodes are catalytic and relatively stable. Typical reactants used in a fuel cell are hydrogen on the anode side and oxygen on the cathode side (a hydrogen cell). In contrast, conventional batteries consume solid reactants and, once these reactants are depleted, must be discarded, recharged with electricity by running the chemical reaction backwards, or, at least in theory, by having their electrodes replaced. Typically in fuel cells, reactants flow in and reaction products flow out, and continuous long-term operation is feasible virtually as long as these flows are maintained. Fuel cells are often considered to be very attractive in modern applications for their high efficiency and ideally emission-free use, in contrast to currently more common fuels such as
