DuPont has just announced that it will voluntarily withdraw the use of all forms of benomyl (Benlate) on fruit and vegetable crops at the end of the year. No sales will occur after December 31, 2001 and existing stocks will likely be out of circulation by the end of 2002. The company spokesman states that the decision is economic in nature—citing the high costs of meeting the increased regulatory requirements due to the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA). This announcement caught most of us by surprise as EPA lists of products slated for re-registration didn’t indicate that benomyl would be addressed until 2002 or 2003. I spoke with Walt Stevenson, vegetable plant pathologist and Patty McManus, fruit crop pathologist about how this cancellation will affect Wisconsin’s fruit and vegetable growers. In Wisconsin vegetable production, benomyl is registered for use on carrots, celery, beans, and vine crops. It is used in snap bean production for Sclerotinia white mold and Botrytis gray mold control. Benomyl is also used on dry, lima, and wax beans. Finding a combination of imported cabbage worm and diamond back moth larvae in cole crops in numbers high enough to treat. Flea beetles are also beginning to infest cole crops. The main problem that we have had in tomatoes up to this point has been heat. Whether it is in greenhouses where they wait to be planted or under row covers in the field, temperatures were getting high enough to cause either leaf curl, or in some instance complete death of the plant(under row cover).
Same thing for melons under row covers.
More sweet corn went into the ground during our few days of dry weather. Flea beetles have generally been found on less than 5% of the corn plants. Asparagus beetles were found on both spears and ferns. Bean leaf beetle is also in the area (although being found in alfalfa and emerged soybeans).
SOUTHWEST OH
Planting of bell and hot peppers and is in full swing. Planting of tomatoes , direct seeding squash and cukes continues. Plasticulture strawberry harvest is going into our second week. Cucumber beetles are beginning to make their presence known in vine crops. Cultivation and sidedressing of sweet corn. Spraying has begun for bean beetle on green beans and half runners. Scouting cabbage and collard and kale fields yesterday there has been some feeding damage on the oldest leaves, but no insects were observed, the grower had recently sprayed. Staking and tying of tomatoes continues with early planted tomatoes having their first clusters of tomatoes set. Planting of pumpkins had begun and planting of sweet corn continues. Rains have just come into the area since Monday night, lots of field work was accomplished in the past 10 days.

GARDENING: Fruits and vegetables make outstanding additions to garden
If the legendary Johnny Appleseed came to visit your garden, would he find many fruit trees and vegetables? These days, I suspect the answer is probably no. If Appleseed had come to the valley 50 years ago, he would have found landscapes full of fruit trees and vegetables. That was the case in those early years with the Earl, Gilcrease, Whipple, Hadland, Fabbi, Stewart, Eaton, Bunker, Witter and Worthen families, to mention a few. They always did and still do have gardens near their kitchen door. Too many gardeners hide their vegetables way out back, and that's a mistake. Put your vegetables on display in flower beds, pots, hanging baskets and under shrubs. These vegetables are just as spectacular as petunias or pansies, and they are edible. I find having them near the kitchen keeps our attention on the crops, so we take better care of them. Many of you feel like you don't have enough room to plant vegetables. If that's the case, turn your imagination loose. Cluster them in whiskey barrels, boxes and discarded pots. Better still, recycle washtubs, abandoned toilets, old shoes and any other container and place them on a balcony.

Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals Market: Potential for Fruit and Vegetable Crops
Definitions Background Global industry overview For more information Nutraceuticals has become a 'buzz word' lately. What does it mean exactly and where does the term "functional foods" fit in all of this? Often the terms nutraceuticals and functional foods are used interchangeably, but the difference between them is in the form of product in which they are taken, as explained in the definitions below by Health Canada.
Definitions
A nutraceutical is a product isolated or purified from food that is generally sold in medicinal forms not usually associated with food. A nutraceutical is demonstrated to have a physiological benefit or provide protection against chronic disease. A functional food is similar in appearance or may be a conventional food, and is consumed as part of a usual diet. It is demonstrated to have physiological benefits and / or reduce the risk of chronic disease beyond basic nutritional functions. (Health Canada, 2002)
Background The designation for functional food and nutraceuticals is not the same globally. There are differences in regulations, and the system for determining what is a nutraceutical/ functional food has not been harmonized throughout the world. Although the categorization of sales and growth within this system would vary between countries, there is positive growth on a global level. Based on the market potential of specific export countries, such as the US, the emerging opportunities for Canadian products entering the nutrition marketplace looks promising.

But not just any kind of watermelon, like the kind available in a supermarket. An old-fashioned variety tickles his fancy. advertisement "They have this particular strain that I'm crazy about called Moon and Stars. It's kind of a darker watermelon, and they have these marks on them that literally look like (the) moon and stars," says Karlin, who has a garden on his 20 acres a few miles south of Eudora. "They're the best watermelon, the sweetest watermelon I've ever had. They're just amazing, and they're beautiful." Karlin, 54, is a fan of heirloom produce fruits and vegetables grown from non-hybridized seeds that have been carefully conserved and passed down within families for generations. Seeds that yield the kind of juicy tomatoes, sugar-sweet corn and cool cucumbers that your grandmother used to grow in her garden. Karlin, operations manager at the Community Mercantile Co-op, 901 Iowa, has all that and more.

By Paige Bowers You should begin to harvest carrots when they are about 3/4 of an inch in diameter. Regardless of the season or vegetable, there's a real difference between caring for cool- and warm-weather crops. If you want good-quality produce from fall plantings, you must give your plants the best growing conditions possible to make them less vulnerable to disease and insect infestation. That said, check out these four steps to cool weather crop care so you can reap a bountiful harvest next spring. South Carolina-based gardener Chad Henderson says that before anything else, backyard farmers need to make their first plantings whether they're broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, or lettuce well after the hottest months of summer and about a month before the first freeze. Henderson suggests consulting U.S. Department of Agriculture climate maps to determine what the average dates are for the last killing frosts of spring and first killing frosts of fall. For example, after each vegetable listed, the first date in a column is the safest time to sow or transplant a crop, while the second date is the latest time one can plant a crop. Any time within those two dates might not yield a good crop.
