Powered by ABOUT THAMES RIVER MELON FARM Thames River Melons was established in 1984 by Robert Chesney in Innerkip, Ontario just a few miles north of Woodstock on the banks of the Thames River. The farm began with one acre of muskmelons and has grown to over 400 acres. The sandy organic soil provides excellent conditions for growing muskmelons. Although muskmelons are the main crop, there are many other fruits and vegetables grown on the farm. The season starts early May with asparagus and as the summer progresses the farm is busy with strawberries, zucchini, watermelons, raspberries, cucumbers, sweet corn and tomatoes. In the fall pumpkins, fall raspberries, leeks and various kinds of squash are harvested. The Chesney family and their staff take pride in offering fresh produce to every customer. This requires a great deal of time and care each step of the way. The first step is to plant the seeds in the greenhouse, which enables a head start to the season and provides produce earlier to the customers. The land is then prepared and the crops are transplanted from the greenhouse when the weather is warmer. Every single plant grown on the farm is transplanted from the greenhouse to the land. This gives the highest probability of healthy growth. With enough rain and lots of sunshine, a bountiful harvest will be produced.

Previous Category Catalog Order Info
Harvesting fruits and vegetables from your garden at the proper stage of maturity is only the first step to fresh table quality. Proper harvesting and post-harvest handling methods, as well as proper storage of fruits and vegetables not immediately eaten, will help maintain the flavor, texture and nutritive value of the produce. Proper storage means controlling both the temperature and relative humidity of the storage area. All fruits and vegetables do not have the same requirements. This NebGuide will help you select the best storage conditions for homegrown and purchased produce.
Harvest Methods and Post-Harvest Care
Most fruits and vegetables are easily bruised if not handled carefully. When harvesting, treat produce as if it were fine china. Tossing fruits and vegetables into baskets or boxes may not leave visible bruises and damage, but decay will begin under the skin. Seemingly sturdy vegetables such as sweet potatoes are actually quite delicate and will not store well if bruised.
