Laura's Tips for Frugal Living
My friends and family know how I get deals on everything. My favorite pleasures in life include is scoring a good deal or seeing a coupon fulfilling its destiny. The way I look at it, life is one big optimization problem (minimize what you spend for the things you need), and I don't want to be a suboptimal solution. Here is all of my wisdomat least what I can remember. Enjoy!
Shopping
  • Cut coupons out every Sunday! This is free money for stuff you buy anyway. Scour the Sunday ads and make note of which stores have sales on the things you need. Check to see if the stores that you normally shop at match prices in other adsthis can be a huge timesaver. The Wal-Mart Supercenter does this near my house. Check to see if any local stores double coupons (the Schnucks in my area doubles coupons up to 40 cents). I've gotten stuff for free this way. You don't need to buy everything at name brand. Some generics (especially toiletries) have the exact ingredients as the name brands. The only problem is that you can't use coupons for generics. But some generics really are crappy so you have to be careful. Always, always buy generic drugs! I've tried

http://www.frugalcorner.com/
Welcome to the Frugal Corner, home of the newsgroup misc.consumers.frugal-living The aim of this site is to provide and continually expand the informational resources needed to be successful at pursuing frugality and a simpler way of life. Because everyone has different priorities, the key is to decrease your spending of money and consumption of products in ways that allow you to still be happy and not feel deprived. Buy closer to what your real needs are. Buy used if appropriate. It is also important to consider the environmental, safety of humans and animals, waste generation, and social impacts of your decisions, including the actions of the companies who make the products you buy, instead of focusing only on getting products and services at the lowest possible price. Resources listed include various aspects of frugality and simplicity that consider things besides just money, including time, drains on your mental, physical, and spiritual energy, general quality of life, and the environment. The more information you have, the more you can save in all areas of your life. Newsgroups take you to web-based Usenet groups at groups.google.com

I'm glad you dropped in! Let me tell you a little about myself. For 4 years my son and I lived near Washington, D.C. on one income. In fact, we bought and lived in our own home on an income of less than $20,000 per year while saving 30 percent and giving 10 percent to charity. I developed my frugal habits and skills the hard way, by climbing out of debts amassed by my ex-husband, a compulsive spender. Today, I am happily remarried and teach community education classes, write a Frugal Advice Column , and run several businesses, public speaking, and freelance writing. My personal story was featured in the May 1996 issue Women's Day Article "America Cuts Back" By Annie Jones
Excerpt from Solo Parenting
by Diane Chambers.
I also have been featured on the Spectrum Sunday Morning Radio Show on 105.9 Washington D.C.
