Frogs and Toads
Two species of frogs and one species of toad are known in Alaska. These small amphibians are the spotted frog Rana pretiosa ), the wood frog Rana sylvatica ), and the western toad Bufo boreas
The spotted frog is rarely seen far from the water while the wood frog is frequently found away from water and in diverse habitats. The western toad is the only toad found in Alaska. The wood frog is the most widely distributed frog in Alaska. Individuals have been observed from southeastern Alaska to north of the Brooks Range, inhabiting diverse vegetation from grasslands to forest, muskeg, and tundra. This smooth-skinned frog is generally light brown or gray in color and has many pattern variations. A dark eye mask is usually evident, and undersurface color is uniformly cream white. A light stripe down the back is often present, and many northern individuals have dark spots on the dorsal surface. The darker coloration of northern frogs is thought to be important to heat economy by absorbing more solar energy. Adults may attain a length of 3 inches (7.6 cm). Text: Kevin Broderson

Frogs, Toads and Newts in your Garden Pond
First issue May 1997 Frogs, toads and newts are under threat in a county like Essex where there is such pressure from development and intensive agriculture. The small ponds, ditches and other wet habitats on which they depend are often filled in, or become unsuitable because they are not looked after or because of pollution from surrounding land. This means that garden ponds are important for amphibians in Essex. Photo by David Corke Profile of Essex amphibians What type of garden pond is best? How should I stock my pond? How can I get rid of surplus spawn? ... Red leg disease
Profile of Essex amphibians
Essex has five species of wild amphibian: Common Frog, Common Toad and three kinds of newt - Smooth (or Common), Great Crested and Palmate (the rarest). They are not difficult to identify providing you have a full grown adult. You can easily tell toads from frogs because of their dry, warty skin, whereas frogs are smooth and shiny, and because they have shorter legs and hence prefer to walk rather than hop.

Frogs also have the widest distribution, which includes just about every habitat imaginable, with high concentrations in the tropics. The distribution map at right shows the approximate global range of anurans. The largest of the thirty anuran families is Leptodactylidae, comprised of over 1,100 species, followed by Hylidae at more than 800 species, and Ranidae at more than 700 species. Allophrynidae, Nasikobatrachidae, and Rhinophrynidae are the smallest families, all comprised of only one species. Home Contact What's New Sitemap ... Fun Frogs Key to BC Frogs and Toads How to use the key: Dichotomous keys are very commonly used in biology - you may have seen one before. Dichotomous means two-branched, and these keys are a useful way to break down an identification process into a number of simple steps . There are paired descriptions of different traits, each numbered. For each pair (beginning at no. 1), pick the option (a) or (b) that best fits your animal, and go to the numbered characteristic given by that option. Choose the best option again, and so on until you come to a species. Click on the name to see the species description, and see whether the description fits what you saw. If it doesn't, try the key again, especially if you were not sure of one or more of your choices. For example, suppose I have seen a small frog in the Lower Mainland. I look at its eyes and see that it has horizontal pupils, so I choose 1(b). This directs me to no. 3; I choose (b) again because my frog has smooth skin. In no. 4 I choose (a) because my frog has a dark eye stripe and sticky pads on its toes. I discover that I have seen a Pacific Treefrog (and a cute little creature it was, too). Key:

115. FROGS
Bronze Frog There are about 2700 known species of frogs and toads. As in the case with birds, you can learn to identify frogs and toads by their voices.
http://www.backyardnature.net/frogs.htm
U nless your backyard is uncommonly moist or includes a body of water, you'll probably not see too many frogs. Frogs simply dry out too quickly in dry places, so usually toads are more common in our backyards, though sometimes treefrogs manage to survive around some suburban homes. Another reason frogs have a hard time in our backyards is that, as noted on our Amphibians Page , amphibians need water in which to reproduce.
FROG FEATURES
The above picture shows the head of a Bronze Frog, Rana clamitans clamitans . It's the southern subspecies of what in the North is called the Green Frog, Rana clamitans melanota . This picture shows the typical frog feature of protruding eyes , which enable the frog to poke its eyes above the water surface and enjoy an above-water view while nearly all the rest of its body remains safely underwater. Frog eyes have eyelids . An upper eyelid, which you can't really see here, is a simple skin fold, and the lower one is a translucent membrane, which you can see here partly covering the eye. When a frog's eyeball is retracted into the eye socket the lower lid spreads over its surface. Also notice the circular item behind the eye and about the size of the eye. This is a round eardrum, or
