They range in size from the tiny Cricket Frog which is only about 1.5 inches long, to the Bullfrog, reaching about 7 inches. All frogs and toads in West Virginia must lay their eggs in water and there is a tadpole stage which lasts from only a few weeks in Spadefoots to several years in Bullfrogs and Green Frogs. Tadpoles are omnivores in general, feeding on plants and microorganisms. All adult frogs and toads are carnivores, preying mainly on insects. The larger species may feed on small mammals, snakes, other frogs, and even birds! Marshall Herpetology Lab Home Email Dr. Pauley

"Disappearance of toads, frogs has some scientists worried"
    By Charles Petit
Chronicle Science Writer, San Francisco Chronicle, April 20, 1992 Gary Fellers, a biologist at Point Reyes National Seashore, hiked into the back country around Mount Lassen recently to scour the ponds and streams for the small, brown Cascades frog that he used to find there by the thousands. "We looked at 50 localities, including 15 where historically the frogs were always found," he said. "We found two. Not frogs in two places. Two frogs total." For several years in a row now, similar news of vanishing frogs and toads has come from Australia, Canada, India, Europe, what used to be the Soviet Union, the mountain-hugging rain forest of Central and South America, and most of the western United States. Now, after a series of meetings to compare fragmentary but worrisome notes, hundreds of scientists and amateur naturalists have joined in an international attempt to find out whether, as so many fear, frog and toad populations are in simultaneous decline around the world. The task, the scientists say, should take three to five years.

    Frog
  • There are more frogs and toads than any other type of amphibian.
  • Frogs are mostly wet and slimy and they hop. Toads, on the other hand, walk to get around and are warty and dry. Both are mostly nocturnal, and some frogs will even hibernate by making a cocoon or burrowing.
  • Frogs and toads are found only around fresh water, where they will lay anywhere from one to 35,000 eggs.
  • Frogs and toads are cold-blooded. This means that they rely on the sun for warmth.
Both frogs and toads can be found all over the world except for Antarctica. Most frogs are found in the tropics.
Most frogs are carnivores and eat insects, but some eat fruit.
Frogs drink through their skin. Because their skin is so important and it can dry out quickly, many frogs shed their skin often. They will wriggle out of it, and sometimes even eat it!
The word amphibian means "both lives." Frogs and toads have lives in the water as tadpoles and on land when they are adults.

Toads and frogs are the most widely spread of all amphibians. About 3700 species are known to be in existence. Frogs are generally known for their long legs which allow for excellent leaping skills. They also have smooth skin. Toads, on the other hand, have shorter legs which make hopping easier. Their skin is warty. Adult frogs and toads are carnivorous. Because of their moist skin, they tend to inhabit wet or moist habitats. Breeding usually occurs in the water, and generally eggs are laid in submerged vegetation. They are then fertilized by the male as he clasps the female. The primary threat to frogs and toads is habitat destruction. Spadefoots (Family Pelobatidae) Eastern Spadefoot (Scaphiopus holbrookii)

Frogs and toads are in the family of critters called amphibians . All amphibians need water to breed and survive. Therefore, you can find an abundance of frogs and toads in the Yahara Lakes and surrounding wetlands. Amphibians are an important species which indicate the health of the environment (otherwise known as an indicator species ). Amphibians skin is porous. Therefore, when soil and water become polluted, amphibians can absorb toxic substances; their populations decline and/or they are born with mutations. I have also included a site that addresses the recent decline in amphibian populations. In order to identify the various species in the area, a good field guide is very helpful. I have suggested a few guidebooks below, along with a few online resources to help you learn more about frog and toads. Blanchard’s Cricket Frog ~ Acris crepitans blanchardi
