Today is
June 28, 1924 to August 12, 2002. He returned home to California Aug. 6 after doctors determined that physical therapy would not aid his recovery and that his condition would continue to deteriorate. On Saturday, friends and family held an open house. Several longtime friends visited with Headrick throughout the daylong celebration of his life, according to his youngest son, Gary Headrick. Steady Ed Headrick was born in South Pasadena on June 28, 1924. He had lived in Santa Cruz County for the past nine years. Headrick invented the Frisbee while working at San Gabriel-based Wham-O in 1964. In the 1970s, he created the sport of disc golf, which involves throwing a Frisbee at a metal cage. Headrick had donated disc golf equipment to a number of recreational programs for under-privileged youth nationwide. He is survived by his wife, Farina Headrick of La Selva Beach; one daughter, Valerie Headrick of Quincy; three sons, Ken Headrick of San Juan-San Ramon, Costa Rica, Daniel Headrick of Laguna Beach and Gary Headrick of San Clemente; and 11 grandchildren.

"Our ministry takes a mission trip to Juarez, Mexico every year.
We have taken the Slip Disc Frisbees with us every trip for years. When we pull up and the children see us with the frisbees, they go nuts.
One year we pulled into cardboard city and started handing out the frisbees and playing with the kids. One little girl ran home and came back with her frisbess and a picture that we had taken of her the year before.
The children love the frisbees. They not only use them as toys, but in the poorer sections of Mexico, the use them as plates also.
The frisbees are a very nice, non-threatening way to share the scriptures in the people's own language."

Slip Disc Testimonials
"Slip Disc is one of the most creative ideas for "guilt-free" missions and evangelism to come along in quite a while. It's one of the very, very few evangelistic tools I've seen where kids were eager to learn how to share the gospel with others. Slip Disc has proven itself to be an "attention-getter" both, here in the States and overseas. Having obtained their attention - it's a small step to developing the opportunity to share the gospel. This is a tool - not just a toy - and it works in opening doors and hearts to the gospel!"

Lack of Sans-a-Belts Makes Disc Golf Fun for All
By Adam Caldarelli Respond to this Article This article provided by:
Have Hyzer, Will Travel
With no greens fees and no sans-a-belt pants, disc golf is slowly but surely becoming a legitimate alternative to the standard whack-the-ball-with-a-club golf, or as its referred to in disc golf circles, “Ball Golf.” As opposed to the ball variety which uses, um… a ball, disc golf incorporates the same basic rules, but is played with a flying disc or Frisbee instead.
The sport has been around in one form or another for at least 20 years. That’s when Ed Headrick invented the “Pole Hole,” the standard goal used in the sport. “It’s a misnomer to say before 1975 that the game didn’t exist. It was just called Frisbee golf,” says Headrick, who is also the inventor of the Frisbee itself and the Super Ball — both of which he invented while at Wham-O. He now runs a company called the Disc Golf Association which manufactures the Pole Hole on which he holds three patents — the patent for the Frisbee he sold to Wham-O for $10. One of his Pole Hole patents just expired, and he fears other companies will try to copy his design.
The Pole Hole design is the accepted “hole” for disc golf. Other designs — one, a metal tube that produces a “gong” when struck — seem primitive compared to the Pole. And, the fact that the sound of chains in the distance has become synonymous with the hollow “dice cup” sound of a golf ball rattling home maintains the dominance of the Pole Hole. Headrick, who has been called the Obi-Wan Kenobi of Disc Golf, not for his Jedi mind tricks (These aren’t the Discs you’re looking for) but for perhaps his semi-resemblance to Alec Guinness and his paternal attitude in promoting the sport. He is also the founder of the Professional Disc Golf Association, which now holds an annual World Championship. This year the event will be held in South Bend, Indiana in August, and will truly determine the world champion.

"Where The Fur Comes To Fly"
Related Innovations More Toys By Mary Bellis Every object has a history, and behind that history an inventor, the person who thought it up first. Sometimes who was first can be a topic for hot debate: often several people independent of each other will all think of the same good idea at around the same time and will later have to argue "No it was me, I thought of it first." Many people have claimed to have invented the Frisbee. The Frisbie Baking Company (1871-1958) of Bridgeport, Connecticut, made pies that were sold to many New England colleges. Hungry college students soon discovered that the empty pie tins could be tossed and caught, providing endless hours of game and sport. Many colleges have claimed to be the home of 'he who was first to fling.' Yale College has even argued that in 1820, a Yale undergraduate named Elihu Frisbie grabbed a passing collection tray from the chapel and flung it out into the campus, thereby becoming the true inventor of the Frisbie and winning glory for Yale. That tale is unlikely to be true since the words 'Frisbie's Pies' was embossed in all the original pie tins and from the word 'Frisbie' was coined the common name for the toy.
