(Curt Werner/Special to The Sentinel) If any of Cumberland County Library System's facilities has potential to be a tourist attraction, Amelia Givin Library would seem to be it. Passersby have been marveling at its appearance since it opened in 1889 on Mt. Holly Springs' main street. And few figures in Cumberland County's history are as intriguing as the library's namesake. Amelia Steele Givin became a multimillionaire at a time when few men had scaled to that level of financial prowess. She ran, among other businesses, a highly successful paper mill. She built a library for her town when few rural towns had libraries. It was the first public library in Cumberland County, and she appears to have spared no expense. | |
