ADVERTISING INFORMATION Tahiti - Culture Tahiti , often called "The Island of Love" , is the largest of the 118 Islands and atolls that comprise French Polynesia. The 1,042 sq. km. (402 sq. miles) of Tahiti's surface area consists of mountain peaks reaching over 2, 000 meters ( 7,000 ft.) into a lei of wispy clouds; deep green valleys covered with rainforests and soft ferns, waterfalls cascading into cool sweet rivers and streams and flat coastal land, with luxurious tropical vegetation. Around Tahiti-Nui (big Tahiti) a 114 km. (71 miles) road winds between the mountains and the sea. And on the peninsula of Tahiti-lti (little Tahiti) the road continues down each coast for 18 km. (12 mile). An interior road leads past dairy farms and citrus groves to a panoramic view on the Plateau of Taravao-the isthmus that connects the two Islands. Papeete , the bustling capital of Tahiti and Her Islands, contains the territorial government offices, gendarmerie, hospitals and clinics, banks, telecommunications center, airline and travel agencies, boutiques and black pearl shops. International cargo freighters, copra schooners, luxury liners and sailing yachts share the harbour. A modem city, it hums with happy voices as the daily drama is staged. Tahiti , however, offers enough interesting excursions and sites to make it worth a short stay.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Culture The islands are a territory of France, part of French Polynesia, which includes four other groups of islandsTahiti Nui, the Tuamotus, the Gambiers, and the Australs. Most of the people of Hiva are Roman Catholics. The people work for "the government, the community, the Catholic church or school system, or for themselveschopping copra, fishing, raising cattle and other livestock, or sculpting bowls, platters, Marquesan ceremonial clubs, tikis, and ukuleles" ("Marquesan Travel Guide"). Many of the sculptures and other arts and crafts products are sold to tourists. In fact, tourist-related businesses are becoming the main source of income and employment. Small hotels, restaurants, sightseeing tours, activities for tourists, and car rentals (mainly four wheel drives in this country of mountainous, unpaved roads) are centered in the main towns such as Taiohae on Nuku Hiva and Atuona on Hiva Oa. 1998 data The Lapita people, precursors of Polynesians, prospered in Samoa for more than a millennium before overcrowding caused a new wave of eastward expansion that reached the Society and Marquesas Islands sometime around 200 B.C. By that time, a distinctive Polynesian identity, religion and culture had evolved that would be the basis for the several related societies to be developed in the various islands of Polynesia. The Spanish were the first to discover the Marquesas and Tuamotu Islands around 1600. More than a century and a half later, British and French navigators, whalers, traders and missionaries competed to further their own interests all over the Pacific. In 1836, two French Catholic missionaries from the Gambier Islands came to Papeete where English Protestant missionaries had become advisers to Queen Pomare IV. Their immediate arrest and deportation became an international incident with France demanding reparations. The problem festered until 1842 when the French intervened militarily to arrest and deport the British missionary they held responsible for causing the incident. Rebellions that broke out on several islands were subdued by the French, leaving them in control of the Society Islands. Later, the Gambier Islands were annexed in 1881 and the Australs in 1900. French Polynesia was directly involved in both World Wars and in 1946 the Islands became an Overseas Territory within the French Republic. It comprises the Society Islands where Tahiti is located, the Austral Islands directly to the south, the Gambier Islands to the southeast, the Tuamotu Islands to the northeast and the Marquesas Islands further out northeast.

      Introduction
INDIVIDUALITY between islands is the hallmark of the culture of the Cook Islands and reflects their varied sources of ancient migration as well as the vast distances between 15 tiny islands scattered over a section of the central South Pacific Ocean as big as the Indian sub-continent.
However, there are some common threads. All the islands employed a chiefly system based on traditional legends of migration and settlement. These stories enshrined the power of the chiefs as inheritors of what might be termed an "heroic" culture.
From time to time theories have been advanced that Polynesian culture before European contact was similar to that of the heroic period of Greece, that is, pre-dating Homer around 1200 BC. Some of these parallels include the concept of ' mana ', kinship, feasting and the giving of food, attitudes towards women and the lack of individualism.

    Polynesian culture
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Polynesian culture refers to the aboriginal culture of the Polynesian -speaking peoples of Polynesia and the Polynesian outliers . Chronologically, the development of Polynesian culture can be divided into four different historical eras:
Exploration and Settlement (c. B.C. - c. A.D.) Pre-European Growth (c. 700 - European Discovery and Colonization until World War II Modern times (After World War II) (1945 - present)

    Exploration and settlement (c.1800 B.C. to 700 A.D.)
Archaeological and linguistic evidence suggests that the first Polynesians entered the Tongan islands sometime around 1800 B.C., bringing with them the Lapita culture which originated in the Santa Cruz Islands The early Polynesians were skillful navigators , capable, by careful observations of cloud reflections and bird flight patterns, to determine the existence and location of islands. Archaeological evidence indicates that by about 700 A.D., every inhabitable island in the vast triangle of Polynesia had been colonized. By comparison, Viking navigators first settled Iceland around 175 years later.
