    A. Demographics
European culture has impacted the indigenous culture of French Polynesia in a number of ways for over two hundred years. This chapter presents an overview integrating historically situated accounts of the traditional culture with perspectives on the influence of colonization and missionary activity on the cultural expression, beliefs, and values related to Polynesian sexuality. When available, contemporary sexual data will be presented. The focus is specifically on the sexuality of the indigenous peoples of French Polynesia and does not address that of the Europeans or the other minorities unless otherwise stated. The Society Islands consist of fourteen atolls and volcanic islands and include the Windward Islands of Tahiti, Moorea, Maiao, Tetiaroa and Mehetia; and the Leeward Islands of Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa, Bora Bora, Maupiti, Tubai, Maupihaa/Mopelia, Manuae/Scilly, and Motu One/Bellingshausen. Taking a stand in Polynesia
Refusing to wear anything but traditional dress is Tahitian native Clement Pito's way of protesting what he calls French occupation of his land. Tahiti and its Polynesian neighbors have long been prizes of colonizing nations. Tahiti has been under French control since 1842 and a French colony since 1880. Its neighbors share a similar history. But Tahitians say it is not their land that is in danger it is their culture. The French language, French culture and French merchandise are everywhere you look in Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia on Tahiti giving it an atmosphere and appearance of a French provincial town, with palm trees. In 1767, when British sailors became the first Europeans to drop anchor in Matavai Bay, they were greeted by people whose culture was completely different from their own. Each ship returned to Europe with amazing stories of feasting and dancing, and of beautiful, exotic people. The stories inspired artists and writers with the philosophical ideal of the "noble savage."

    Terrain
Most of the islands are of volcanic origin (Tubuai Islands); mountainous (like the Society Islands or the fertile Marquesas Islands, rising to 1,190 m on Hiva Oa) and ringed by coral reefs like the Tuamotu and Gambier island groups.
    Climate
French Polynesia has a tropical climate, which is hot and humid from November to April but cooler and drier for the remainder of the year. Temperatures are moderated by the prevailing trade winds. The average annual temperature is around 27° C all year. Severe tropical storms are not very common, the most severe weather heads for these islands during years when the El Niño is occurring.
    Fauna/Flora
At the Society Islands, Tuamotu Archipelago, and the Marquesas breadfruit, pandanus, and coconut trees are grown. The limited fauna at the Society Islands includes wild pigs, rats, and small lizards. Wild cattle and hogs are found at the Marquesas.

In response to a request made by Mrs. Louise Peltzer, Minister of Culture, Higher Education and Research in French Polynesia, Mr. Robert Veccella, Head of the GRAN branch in Tahiti , agreed to manage a comprehensive excavation campaign on the site.
The significance of the excavation area is due to its dimensions (250 by 50 meters) and to the number of the objects it holds, which has been estimated to several hundreds.
Those objects have been described in situ by the GRAN Team in Polynesia, and are identified as : anchors, plummet sinkers for fishing lines or nets, adzes, pestles, axle shaped stones, and maybe standing stones and seats which were used in marae (Polynesian places of worship). Some other stone types could possibly be found on the site.

Employment levels in pearl culture in French Polynesia: a correction
Dear Sir, Almost all pearl farms are located in the Tuamotu and Gambier island groups that only had 15,370 inhabitants at the time of the 1996 census. The labour force represents about 42% of this population, i.e. 6427 people, from which must be deducted all those who do not making a living from pearl culture as not all of the islands in these groups are suitable for this industry. It is generally estimated that the number of pearl culture-related jobs is between 3000 and 4000. Your estimate seems to have been extrapolated from a 1989 figure to which you applied the production growth rate, but it seems that increased production was the result of very large pearl farms using increasingly modern methods which make possible scale economies and significant increases in productivity. Family production, which is more job-intensive, accounts for only 10 to 20% of total production.

History Archaeological evidence suggests that the Marquesas Islands were settled by AD 300 by Polynesians from Tonga and Samoa Islands. The western portion of the Society Islands was probably inhabited by AD 800.The first Europeans to arrive on the island groups were 16th-century Spanish and Portuguese explorers. The French took control of the islands in the 18th century. Tahiti, the largest island in French Polynesia, was made a French protectorate in 1842 and a colony in 1880.
