French Polynesia a collection of 118 islands covers a vast area of the southeastern Pacific Ocean, just about the size of Europe. • Food is still cooked in traditional pit ovens. A hole is dug in the ground, stones are placed within it and then a fire is lit to heat the stones. The food, wrapped in banana leaves, is placed on top, and then the hole is filled in again with earth. The baking process takes several hours. In French Polynesia this kind of oven is called an ahimaa and the feast is called a tamaaraa.

The People

The 1988 population census found a total of about 190,000 people in French Polynesia. However the criteria used for defining the racial groups can only approximate a breakdown of: 70% Polynesian, 12% European, 10% Polynesian/European, five per-cent Chinese, and three percent Polynesian/Chinese. All are French citizens. The 1988 population figures for the five administrative subdivisions are Windward Islands 140,341, Leeward Islands 22,232, Austral Islands 6,500, Tuamotu/Gambier Islands 12,374, Marquesas Islands 7,358. About 70% of the total population lives on Tahiti. The indigenous people of Tahiti-Polynesia are the maohi or Eastern Polynesians (as opposed to the Western Polynesians in Samoa and Tonga). Racial intermariages are commun and many Tahitians can claim French, Chinese, American and Polynesian ancestry. This accounts for the physical beauty of the inhabitants and the total abscence of racial prejudice, either from the Europeans or the Tahitians. Education
Formal education is mandatory in Tahiti for every child to the age of 14. Primary education begins at age five, and continues to the age of 12, when children begin secondary education.

Culture The missionaries did all they could to wipe out traditional Polynesian culture by levelling temples, destroying carvings, and banning tattoos and that heady, erotic dancing that Bougainville told Europe about. The missionaries sought to make the Polynesians follow the teachings of the Good Book and their own autocratic commandments, but fortunately some of the traditional ways survived. Recently there's been a strong push to revive old ways and rediscover traditional arts. Traditional musical instruments include pahu and toere drums and the curious nose flute called a vivo tamure ) has slowly made its way back into French Polynesian life, but, sadly, the art of making tapa (bark paper and cloth), practised throughout the Pacific, has all but disappeared. Things are pretty laid back in French Polynesia - dress standards are relaxed even in the classiest restaurants and beach wear is often just from the waist down. Church is deadly serious though and Sunday is the day of worship (fully clothed). The Polynesian concept of family is a much broader one than in the West - cousins, uncles, aunts etc are all part of the scene and are called fetii . The family might also have adopted children

Choosing where to go in french polynesia is akin to perusing the menu at a last vestiges of precontact religion and culture left in french polynesia.
http://www.grandtimes.com/French_Polynesia.html
Traveling in French Polynesia WHERE VACATION MEETS ADVENTURE by Robert F. Kay Choosing where to go in French Polynesia is akin to perusing the menu at a five-star restaurant. There are so many places to visit, it’s really a tough call. Each of the five major island groups has its own distinctive attractions. The main thing is to get out of Papeete and either spend time in one of Tahiti’s outer districts or visit one of the outer islands. Only in Tahiti’s countryside or on an outer island are you likely to experience the pace and hospitality of genuine French Polynesia. My personal favorites in the Society Group (which includes the Windward and Leeward Islands) are Moorea, Huahine and Maupiti. If you can, you should also make a point of visiting at least one island in the Tuamotu Group so that you can experience an atoll, which is entirely different from a high island. Among these islands you might consider one of the lesser visited atolls such as Tikehau, Takaroa, Mataiva or Fakarava. If you have the time and the budget, at least one of the Marquesas Islands should also be on your itinerary. Remote and seldom visited by tourists, their precipitous terrain is absolutely spectacular. I like Nuku Hiva, but any island in the Marquesas Group is worth seeing. Society Group Because of its proximity to Tahiti, Moorea has become a “suburb” of Papeete. The island is dramatically beautiful, with sharp serrated peaks that command deep cleft valleys. The pace is slower than Tahiti, it’s less congested with cars, and it has an abundance of good beaches—many more than Tahiti.

This means that when it comes to knowing the facts and culture, people, history, economy, Raiatea, the second largest Island in all of french polynesia,
http://www.raiatea.com/about.html
Many travelers visit Raiatea or Tahaa as a "sidetrip" or "extra Island visit" from their more famous (and more touristed) cousin islands Tahiti, Bora bora, or Moorea. This means that when it comes to knowing the facts and culture, people, history, economy, etc., they are usually just as naive about these islands as the rest.
Usually they arrive with the simple desire to just relax and take in the Pacific Island charm. Not long after arriving, however, does the true nature of French Polynesia begin to unfold for them, as it does with all the Tahitian islands...
A couple of days on Raiatea, Polynesia's "sacred island" or the charming and little touristed island of Tahaa, and they begin to recognize French Polynesia for it's many faces beyond a mere "Island vacationland." These French owned islands are filled with a unique energy unto themselves, just as all the other Society Islands. There's no place on earth quite like them...
Of course return travelers and local inhabitants know that. Each lives or returns to Raiatea and Tahaa for their own reasons...
