Objectives...
The following French course is intended to allow you to understand written French (newspapers, articles, magazines, signs on the road during your next trip in France, etc.) and to write a letter to a French friend or correspondent. I would have liked to teach you spoken French but unfortunately, the Web is not the good medium for that. In the first five lessons, I will especially focus on the grammatical aspects of the French language in order to be able to go into conversations rapidly. This part of the course is not easy and somewhat boring, but don't give up ! The other lessons will be more conversation-oriented. If you have any questions, feel free to send me email at the address below. I hope you will enjoy learning French with me and that we'll have the opportunity to exchange some email, ... preferably in French ! One of my favorite past-time is writting. I have selected for

History of the french language French 4555 (some development patterns from The Importance of the french language / L importance de la langue française
    http://globegate.utm.edu/french/globegate_mirror/histfren.html
The present site is not meant to serve as a History of the French Language textbook. A number of the nearly 100 links may seem extraneous to traditional historical linguists; some of them show a political bias, and some do not bring the accuracy of a Mildred Pope to the task. With few exceptions, descriptions of gradual phonemic shifts in French are lacking on the WWW. This kind of internal history, along with some aspects of external history are more effectively studied in print . What the site offers is great wealth in the variety of its historical topics, including modern efforts to legislate French language use. To my thinking as an amateur external historian, these efforts are simply a continuation of the process which began in 813 at the Council of Tours (and in 3 or 4 others that year), where the Church enjoined clergy to preach "in rusticam romanam linguam". The importance of romance idiom is again officially recognized in 842, with the "Sermens de Strasbourg". From this point, court and monastic sponsorship of writing, along with the extension of political and military dominion are important determiners in the growth of status for the various romance idioms. The famous "Ordonance de Villers-Cotterets" (1539) indicates perhaps the first officially recognized role of the dominant regional language, which had become French.

    Description of the Examination
The French Language examination is designed to measure knowledge and ability equivalent to that of students who have completed two to four semesters of college French language study. The exam focuses on skills typically achieved from the end of the first year through the second year of college study; material taught during both years is incorporated into a single exam. The exam contains 120 questions to be answered in 90 minutes. There are two Listening sections and one Reading section. Each section has its own timing requirements. The three sections are weighted so that each question contributes equally to the total score.
