      The French and Indian War
Washington first gained public notice late in 1753 when he volunteered to carry a message from Gov. Robert Dinwiddie of Virginia to the French moving into the Ohio country, warning them to quit the territory, which was claimed by the British. In delivering the message Washington learned that the French were planning a further advance. He hastened back to Virginia, where he was commissioned lieutenant colonel by Dinwiddie and sent with about 400 men to reinforce the post that Dinwiddie had ordered built at the junction of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers. The French, however, captured the post before he could reach it, and on hearing that they were approaching in force, Washington retired to the Great Meadows to build (July) an entrenched camp ( Fort Necessity ). Late in May he had won his first military victory (and his colonelcy) when he surprised (through the intelligence of his Native American allies) a small body of French troops. The French soon avenged this defeat, overwhelming him with a superior force at Fort Necessity on July 3, 1754. He surrendered on easy terms on July 4 and returned to Virginia with the survivors of his command. These battles marked the beginning of the last of the French and Indian Wars in America, in which Washington continued to figure.

Crab Island steeped in country’s history
PLATTSBURGH — At my recent high-school reunion, former classmate Mike Caldwell asked about progress on the monument at Crab Island. Upon learning about the successful efforts by volunteers dedicated to the historical significance of the place, he suggested we travel over and look around. He didn’t have to ask twice. So last week Mike and his wife, Paige, picked up Marty and me at the Plattsburgh Marina. I brought him up to date on developments at the Plattsburgh waterfront, then we headed out for our destination.

British Invasion in India
British in India -The Coming of the Europeans
The quest for wealth and power brought Europeans to Indian shores in 1498 when Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese voyager, arrived in Calicut (modern Kozhikode, Kerala) on the west coast. In their search for spices and Christian converts, the Portuguese challenged Arab supremacy in the Indian Ocean, and, with their galleons fitted with powerful cannons, set up a network of strategic trading posts along the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf. In 1510 the Portuguese took over the enclave of Goa, which became the center of their commercial and political power in India and which they controlled for nearly four and a half centuries. British Invasion English company agents became familiar with Indian customs and languages, including Persian, the unifying official language under the Mughals. In many ways, the English agents of that period lived like Indians, intermarried willingly, and a large number of them never returned to their home country. The knowledge of India thus acquired and the mutual ties forged with Indian trading groups gave the English a competitive edge over other Europeans. The French commercial interestCompagnie des Indes Orientales (East India Company, founded in 1664)came late, but the French also established themselves in India, emulating the precedents set by their competitors as they founded their enclave at Pondicherry (Puduchcheri) on the Coramandel Coast. Later, Clive defeated the Mughal forces at Buxar (Baksar, west of Patna in Bihar) in 1765, and the Mughal emperor (Shah Alam, r. 1759-1806) conferred on the company administrative rights over Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa, a region of roughly 25 million people with an annual revenue of 40 million rupees (for current value of the rupeesee Glossary). The imperial grant virtually established the company as a sovereign power, and Clive became the first British governor of Bengal.

As a kid, James Nachtwey loved to draw pictures of the Civil War and World War II. More than 40 years later, Nachtwey, a documentary photographer, is still making images of war, only now he uses a camera. Nachtwey talked with TFK?s Angelique LeDoux about his photography and what his experiences have taught him about humankind. Here is an excerpt of his interview:
TFK: You were born in New York, but raised in Massachusetts. Tell me about growing up. What did you want to be when you got older?
Nachtwey: I wanted to be a cowboy when I grew up. I had no background as a child in photography...but I did love drawing pictures. In fact, my favorite subject in drawing pictures was war pictures. I wish I still had those drawings. I drew all different wars, civil war pictures and World War II pictures.
TFK: Do you remember any book from your youth that had a profound impact on you?
