A Brief History
Early the next year, 1755, Major General Edward Braddock was sent to America as commander-in-chief of the British forces in America. He quickly set in motion plans to capture Fort Duquesne, leading his troops west from Virginia in June. Meeting the French 10 miles east of Fort Duquesne, the British were defeated with heavy losses, including Braddock who died four days after the battle. Once again the French had maintained their grip on the Ohio Valley. In the north, British luck was better, for they won a battle on Lake George and established two forts just south of the French fortification (Fort Frederick) at Crown Point on Lake Champlain. These were Fort Edward on the Hudson River and Fort William Henry at the southern end of Lake George. This de facto control was confirmed two and a half years later at the Treaty of Paris, February 10, 1763, which gave all of North America east of the Mississippi, other than New Orleans, to the British. The French also turned over their claims of New Orleans and the lands west of the Mississippi to Spain, as compensation for Spain's surrendering Florida to the British. Though the European-based war ceased, the Native Americans in the west remained hostile to the British. The Pontiac Rebellion and other Indian hostilities lasted until the end of 1764, at which time peace finally reigned in North America. This peace, however, would last only a decade until a new war, the Revolution, began a new episode in the history of the continent.

Begun in what is now western Pennsylvania with a battle involving a young Virginia officer named George Washington, this conflict waxed and waned in an arc running from that western wilderness, through the Great Lakes, over to Lakes George and Champlain, and as far north as the River and Gulf of St. Lawrence. When the fighting was finished and the Treaty of Paris signed, France had lost all her possessions in North America and Britain was mistress of the entire region extending from the entire Atlantic coast to the Mississippi River.

INDIAN WARS
The Indian Wars in the area of the present-day United States began in 1540 when the conquistadors of Francisco Vazquez de Coronado clashed with Zuni warriors of the pueblo of Hawikuh. The wars ended three and one-half centuries later, in 1890, when U.S. cavalry troops almost wiped out Big Foot's (1825-90) band of Sioux at Wounded Knee. These two events and the numerous clashes in between were part of the continuing struggle for possession of North America. Warfare was but one instrument of conquest; diplomacy, trade, disease, and assimilation also played significant roles. Warfare, however, was a constant theme, one central to understanding the conquest of the continent.
Colonial Indian Wars
Almost continuous Indian warfare marked the colonial experience in North America. Spain established outposts in the area of the Rio Grande early in the 17th century with a major aim of converting the Pueblo tribes to Christianity, a program severely retarded by the Pueblo Rebellion of 1680, which drove all Spaniards from the province for 12 years. In the East, English settlers also provoked uprisings as they began to spread inland from the Atlantic Coast. A bloody outbreak in Virginia in 1622 was followed by the Pequot war in New England in 1636-37. In most of the English colonies sporadic fighting alternated with full-scale war for a century and a half. One of the most violent conflicts was king Philip's war of 1675-76 in New England.

In 1643 Dutch troops took the area over and held it until 1664 when the English captured it. In 1681 the King of England granted the region of Pennsylvania to William Penn in payment of a debt owed to William Penn's father. William Penn came there in 1682 as its Governor. He wrote its constitution which called for an elected legislature. Penn died in 1718 and his family governed the region until the Revolutionary War. David McCord of Derry (now Hershey) Pennsylvania and William McCord of Ft. McCord near Chambersburg both held original land patents for their lands granted by the sons of William Penn in the early 1750's. Related Category: U.S. History French and Indian Wars, To the settlers in America, however, the rivalry of the two powers was of immediate concern, for the fighting meant not only raids by the French or the British but also the horrors of tribal border warfare. The conflict may be looked on, from the American viewpoint, as a single war with interruptions. The ultimate aim : domination of the eastern part of the continent : was the same; and the methods : capture of the seaboard strongholds and the little Western forts and attacks on frontier settlements : were the same. The wars helped to bring about important changes in the British colonies. In addition to the fact of their ocean-wide distance from the mother country, the colonies felt themselves less dependent militarily on the British by the end of the wars; they became most concerned with their own problems and put greater value on their own institutions. In other words, they began to think of themselves as American rather than British. Sections in this article:

Phase Four: Worldwide Conflict
The fall of Canada began the fourth and last stage of the war. Only minor conflicts continued on the mainland of North America. Many of these occurred between British settlers in the Carolinas and Native American peoples like the Cherokee, who had sided with the French to protect their lands. In Europe, the Seven Years’ War had reached a stalemate, with neither the British nor the French alliances able to dominate. On many other battlefronts around the world, however, the British had great successes. The English East India Company captured French trading posts and dominated commercial markets in large sections of India. British forces seized French Senegal in West Africa, the French sugar islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe, and the Spanish colonies of Cuba and the Philippine Islands. When warfare ended in 1763, William Pitt had left office, but his strategy of attacking the enemies’ colonial possessions had extended British power all over the world.

http://web.syr.edu/~laroux/history/history.html
1755-The French and Indian War: History #1 A Brief History of the French and Indian War Historians will usually note that the French and Indian War was actually a small portion of what is known as the Seven Years War. This is not entirely correct. While the Seven Years War, and the French and Indian War were related, in fact the French and Indian War being the beginning of the Seven Years War, the conflict in America was more closely tied to the unsettled feelings left over from King George's War (1744-1748).
After the treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle finished that earlier war, the hatred between the French and the English in the Americas never quite waned. It must be understood, that in 1755 France held most of America. The French land claims covered Canada (close to what we know know as Canada), as well as New France (that is, the stretch of land following the Mississippi River all the way to Louisiana).
The English, wanting to expand their land, often moved into the land claimed by the French. This encroachment forced the French to build several forts along the frontier. Some of these forts were Fort Duquesne (Near present day Pittsburgh), and Fort Miamis. The French, never lovers of the English due to hundreds of years of fighting, sent the Indians who allied themselves with the French in raiding parties in retaliation for raids conducted by the Indians on the English side, who claimed that thier raids were in retaliation for those made by the French. It didn't matter which side was correct, the main object wasn't to retaliate, but rather for the French to keep the English in their place, and for the English to iritate the French as much as possible until they moved out.

SAVOIR FAIRE: The French and Indian War
Sandra Bell, Research and Information Services William Fowler Jr., Director of the Massachusetts Historical Society, historian, professor, and author of several books on American history, spoke to an enthusiastic group on February 18, 2003, about his latest research project, the French and Indian War.
From left to right: Sandra Burrows, William M. Fowler, Nina Milner.
The French and Indian War (1754-1763) was a series of conflicts between the French and English for control of North America. Dr. Fowler provided a chronology, context and analysis of the key events for his audience. The French and Indian War has several names, including the War for Empire, the Seven Years’ War, and the War of the Conquest. Dr. Fowler suggested that it might also be called the first World War since the conflict spanned the entire globe from Europe to India, from the West Indies to the Philippines, and from North America to Asia. The period also saw the feats and achievements of some of history's famous characters: George Washington, General James Wolfe, the Marquis de Montcalm and William Pitt. It also saw the Battle of the Plains of Abraham on September 13, 1759, a significant date in the evolution of the country of Canada, a day which changed the course of history on the North American continent. The context for the French and Indian War was the rivalry between France and England. After the Reformation, both countries went different ways: England became Protestant while France remained Roman Catholic. While both sought overseas exploits, neither country was the first to arrive in the New World. Other nation states such as Spain and Portugal had already ventured into North America. However, the rivalry between the two countries was transferred to the New World.
