Posted Jun 13, 2005, 10:55 AM ET by Lisa Simpson Lutts Thanks Eric for pointing your readers to the CNN article on New York's encampments for 2005. This is just the beginning of an amazing series of reenactments and historical events that will take place in New York through 2009.
Fort Ticonderoga, built by the French as Fort Carillon, played a significant role during the French and Indian War. In 2008, Fort Ticonderoga will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Carillon, which took place at the Fort on July 8, 1758. Despite overwhelming odds, the French were able to hold the Fort against a much superior number of British troops. The victory is considered the greatest French victory during the war. We anticipate a year full of great events to commemorate the Battle.

FRENCH-INDIAN WAR: History comes alive 250 years later
By CHRIS CAROLA Associated Press LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) — History lessons don’t have to be confined to classrooms. This summer, they’re being given outdoors by red coats and Rangers, American Indian warriors and frontier wives, accompanied by the roar of cannon and the rattle of muskets. And the views aren’t bad, either. This year marks the 250th anniversary of the start of the French and Indian War in New York. The 18th-century conflict began in Pennsylvania in 1754 and ended in Canada in 1760, but in between, most of the key events of the war — from set-piece battles to bloody forest ambushes — took place in upstate New York. Beginning this summer, historic sites from Fort Ticonderoga along the Vermont line to Old Fort Niagara in western New York are hosting a five-year series of events, including battle re-enactments and colonial military encampments. The living history events offer visitors a glimpse into what life was like in an 18th-century army campaigning in North America. The re-enactors portraying British, American and French soldiers, Indians, sutlers (peddlers who followed the troops, selling provisions) and their families welcome questions about their uniforms, weapons and camping methods.

By William M. Fowler, Jr. Mr. Fowler, the Director of the Massachustts Historical Society, is the author of Empires at War: the French and Indian War and the Struggle for North America 1754-1763 (2004).
A little more than two hundred and fifty years ago a group of militia and Indians led by a twenty-two year old major named George Washington surprised a camp of sleeping French soldiers near present day Pittsburgh. Washington could not have known it, but that brief and deadly exchange of fire began a war that swept across North America and eventually engulfed nearly the entire globe. The outcome of this struggle changed the course of history and laid the framework for the world in which we live. My own interest in the war began with reading James Fenimore Cooper's Last of the Mohicans and Francis Parkman's Montcalm and Wolfe . I devoured Cooper's and Parkman's romantic accounts. But those authors never told the full story. Like most Americans I knew this conflict as the French and Indian War. Later I learned that some Canadians, particularly those of French descent, refer to the conflict as the War of the Conquest, and that in European history it is called the Seven Years War. None of these titles is fully accurate, for in fact the struggle that raged between 1754 and 1763 (hostilities preceded the formal declarations of war by two years) was the first world war.

Iroquois History [Note: This is a single part of what will be, by my classification, about 240 compact tribal histories (contact to 1900). It is limited to the lower 48 states of the U.S. but also includes those First Nations from Canada and Mexico that had important roles ( Huron , Micmac, Assiniboine, etc.). This history's content and style are representative. The normal process at this point is to circulate an almost finished product among a peer group for comment and criticism. At the end of this History you will find links to those Nations referred to in the History of the Iroquois. Using the Internet, this can be more inclusive. Feel free to comment or suggest corrections via e-mail. Working together we can end some of the historical misinformation about Native Americans. You will find the ego at this end to be of standard size. Thanks for stopping by. I look forward to your comments... Lee Sultzman Iroquois Location The original homeland of the Iroquois was in upstate New York between the Adirondack Mountains and Niagara Falls. Through conquest and migration, they gained control of most of the northeastern United States and eastern Canada. At its maximum in 1680, their empire extended west from the north shore of Chesapeake Bay through Kentucky to the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers; then north following the Illinois River to the south end of Lake Michigan; east across all of lower Michigan, southern Ontario and adjacent parts of southwestern Quebec; and finally south through northern New England west of the Connecticut River through the Hudson and upper Delaware Valleys across Pennsylvania back to the Chesapeake. With two exceptions - the Mingo occupation of the upper Ohio Valley and the Caughnawaga migration to the upper St. Lawrence - the Iroquois did not, for the most part, physically occupy this vast area but remained in their upstate New York villages.

Local News French-Indian War group launches online guide to anniversary events Friday, February 28, 2003 By Marylynne Pitz, Post-Gazette Staff Writer History buffs have a new Internet site to visit. The War for Empire Consortium launched its Web site yesterday. The consortium, made up of representatives from local historic sites, created the Web site to announce events that will mark the 250th anniversary of the French and Indian War, also known as the War for Empire or the Seven Years War, in 2004. The war, which began in 1754 and ended in 1763, pitted Britain, France and American Indians against one another in a monumental struggle for political and economic control of North America. A young George Washington, Pittsburgh and its Point all played key roles in the war. The confluence of Pittsburgh's three rivers was a very desirable site for a fort. There are 18 historic sites in Western Pennsylvania associated with the war.

Background of the French and Indian War
The early colonial wars between France and Britain were fought primarily in Europe; American events played relatively minor roles. After three rounds, no clear victor had emerged. Following the third of these conflicts, King George’s War (1740-1748), French authorities in North America began to establish a string of forts in the Ohio country west of the Allegheny Mountains. Their intent was to keep fur-trapping and trading activities in the hands of French citizens and to deny the area to land-hungry American colonists. (See Development of New France In the 1740s a group of Virginians received from the Crown a massive land grant for lands in the Ohio valley. The subsequent Ohio Company was established for the purpose of investing in western lands and, secondarily, for engaging in the fur trade. Understandably, tensions between the contending powers mounted rapidly. The picture was further complicated by the allegiances of the area’s natives. As a rule, most of the tribes tended to favor the French who enjoyed a reputation for conducting business more fairly than the British. Further, the French trappers and traders did not threaten to inundate the region with settlers, unlike the British colonists. In 1753
