“T he volley fired by a young Virginian in the backwoods of American set the world on fire” From the 1750's and through the early 1760's, the British, the French, and many American Indian nations engaged in a war that changed the course of American history: the French and Indian War. It started over who would control the Ohio River Valley and a familiar figure, George Washington, was an early participant. At the time about 3,000 to 4,000 American Indians were living in the Ohio River Valley. The French had settlements in Canada, the “Illinois country” and Louisiana (which included New Orleans). The British settled east of the Allegheny Mountains along the eastern seaboard. Both the French and the British thought they had an indisputable claim to the Ohio River Valley, as did the Indians who lived there. For both economic and political reasons all three powers wanted to control this region. As tensions and actions escalated a clash seemed inevitable. On May 28, 1754 the first shot was fired and as British historian Horace Walpole wrote, it “set the world on fire.” Eventually France and Britain declared war on each other and the fighting spread from North America to Europe, the Caribbean, India, and the Philippines. War was not new to these powerful European nations. They had been traditional rivals and enemies in a dozen previous wars.

AMERICAN HISTORY FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR
(SEVEN YEARS WAR)
In the 1750s, the British are worried about the French. The French are getting some of the best furs out of the west (west of the Appalachians) and they are inciting the Indians to attack frontier settlements. Furthermore, the colonies are getting more populous, and the people (especially the rich, for wealth is often measured by land) want more land. So, to get a hold in the west, in the vast areas Virginia claims, many wealthy and influential Virginians, including the Washington family, form the Ohio Company to survey, settle and sell 500,000 acres in the Ohio River Valley. George Washington, aged 21, is sent to Fort Duquesne and tells the French to leave the area. They say ‘non George Washington goes home and reports. He is made a Lt. Col. of militia and is sent by Governor Dinwiddie with about 150 militiamen into this territory to investigate French forts in the area. He comes upon Ft Duquesne (now Pittsburgh), encounters a French patrol and ambushes it, driving it off. The French prepared to counterattack, and Washington built Ft Necessity. He was besieged and defeated in ten hours on 4 July, 1754. Thus the French and Indian War begins. It is sometimes called the Great War for Empire, because French and Indian was is no longer PC. It is also called the Seven Years War because it lasted 7 years in Europe (but 9 in America).

he French and Indian War was a period in our history that is largely overlooked today. Interestingly, it is a period of British history and French history, as well as American, since the war was fought by the French and the subjects of New France (Canada) against Britain and her colonial subjects. Officially, the war took place in 1756-1763. But critical events in North America, including the first real battle in 1754 led by a fresh young commander named George Washington, took place years before war was declared. Also, the war ended in North America in 1761, two years before it ended in Europe. Most of the battles took place in the Hudson River/Champlain Valley corridor, and, secondarily, the Connecticut River valley. For hundreds of years, Indians and then European explorers traveled north from the mouth of the Hudson River to a place near the south end of Lake George, where they carried there canoes and small boats a few miles overland and resumed their journeys on Lake George. At the north end of Lake George was another portage to the south end of Lake Champlain. From the north end of Lake Champlain, another series of portages and river routes emptied into Hudson Bay in Canada. Many Indian tribes lived along this region, and both the French and British military built fortifications up and down the waterways. Last of the Mohicans , this event might have been largely forgotten, but he and eventually Hollywood have highlighted and immortalized it. One name that has made this scene real for me is that of

Prelude to Revolution
1763 to 1775 - The Proclamation of 1763 , signed by King George III of England, prohibits any English settlement west of the Appalachian mountains and requires those already settled in those regions to return east in an attempt to ease tensions with Native Americans. - The Sugar Act is passed by the English Parliament to offset the war debt brought on by the French and Indian War and to help pay for the expenses of running the colonies and newly acquired territories. This act increases the duties on imported sugar and other items such as textiles, coffee, wines and indigo (dye). It doubles the duties on foreign goods reshipped from England to the colonies and also forbids the import of foreign rum and French wines. - The English Parliament passes a measure to reorganize the American customs system to better enforce British trade laws, which have often been ignored in the past. A court is established in Halifax, Nova Scotia, that will have jurisdiction over all of the American colonies in trade matters. - The Currency Act prohibits the colonists from issuing any legal tender paper money. This act threatens to destabilize the entire colonial economy of both the industrial North and agricultural South, thus uniting the colonists against it.

    T he Seven Years War
T he "Seven Years War," the "French and Indian War", and the "Great War for Empire." Variously named and defined, each of these terms refers to the same watershed event in early American History. European superpowers France and Great Britain engaged in a century-long struggle for world domination that lasted from 1689 to 1815. Against an overall climate of hostility, a series of distinct wars were fought in Europe itself and in (and over) their worldwide colonial empires. The New York theater of the last of these North American adjuncts began with the French and Indian raid and burning of Hoosick in August 1754. North American forces fought with each other over the next two years although war was not declared officially until 1756. Although for the most part, fighting ended in North America following the fall of Quebec in 1759, this conflict was not concluded officially until the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1763. For the people of colonial Albany , this war was particularly instructive. Beginning with the Albany Congress in June 1754, these years brought Albany its first extended and intensive contacts with people from the other British colonies and later with British armies and officials. These acquaintances had made a profound and lasting impression on rank-and-file people living in this previously insular community. Their experiences with British armies quartered in and around the city left many to wonder if the British were in Albany to protect them from the French, who then would protect them from the British army!

    The Early Frontier
Indian Languages Pioneers American Dialects Along the Braddock Road
From Cai-Uc-Tu-Cuc in 1723 to Braddock's Expedition in 1755 By Will H. Lowdermilk (1878) Edited by R. Wenning Excerpted from Lowdermilk's original book entitled History of Cumberland, Maryland, this volume begins with the early history of the region in the 1700s. The earliest written and oral history of the indigenous people begins in 1728 at the Indian town of Caiuctucuc, located at the junction of two streams known as the Cohongaronta and Caitucuc. The town was built on ground near what would later become Cumberland, Maryland and the inhabitants of the region were a branch of the Shawnee tribe. The first official government venture into this region and westward into the Pennsylvania frontier came at the request of Governor Dinwiddie to reconnoiter French intentions and activity in the region in the early 1750s. To carry out this order, a young George Washington was chosen and his winter journey into Western Pennsylvania would culminate with his capitulation at Fort Necessity in 1754. Washington's Journal of this expedition forms an important part of this volume. The remainder of the book covers the building of Fort Cumberland and the activities that led up to the disastrous defeat of General Braddock in 1755. Braddock's Orderly Books from February through June 1755, taken from originals in the Library of Congress, are also included

They were really campaigns in the worldwide struggle for empire and were roughly linked to wars of the European coalitions. At the time they were viewed in Europe as only an unimportant aspect of the struggle, and, although the stakes were Canada, the American West, and the West Indies, the fortunes of war in Europe had more effect in determining the winner than the fighting in the disputed territory itself. To the settlers in America, however, the rivalry of the two powers was of immediate concern, for the fighting meant not only raids by the French or the British but also the horrors of tribal border warfare. The conflict may be looked on, from the American viewpoint, as a single war with interruptions. The ultimate aim—domination of the eastern part of the continent—was the same; and the methods—capture of the seaboard strongholds and the little Western forts and attacks on frontier settlements—were the same. The wars helped to bring about important changes in the British colonies. In addition to the fact of their ocean-wide distance from the mother country, the colonies felt themselves less dependent militarily on the British by the end of the wars; they became most concerned with their own problems and put greater value on their own institutions. In other words, they began to think of themselves as American rather than British.

The French and Indian War is the American name for the decisive nine-year conflict ( ) in North America between Great Britain and France , which was one of the theatres of the Seven Years' War . The war resulted in France's loss of all its possessions in North America except for some Caribbean islands and Saint Pierre and Miquelon, two small islands off Newfoundland. The Seven Years' War At the beginning of the Seven Years' War ( the Champlain Valley became an area of contested ground between the two superpowers of the day, France and England. Due to its strategic location on Lake Champlain that protected the portage to Lake George, Governor-General Vaudreuil, the French Governor of Canada, ordered a fort to be constructed on the Ticonderoga peninsula. This was the southernmost fort of the French Empire in the New World. Vaudreuil was anticipating attacks on Fort St. Frederic and the French settlements at today's Crown Point, New York and Chimney Point, Vermont and hoped to stop the push northward by the British army as it sought more land. The Canadian engineer Michel Chartier De Lotbiniere oversaw fort construction and French and French Canadian soldiers and civilians built it. Construction began in the fall, and continued for two more summer campaigns. The Fort was named Fort Carillon. French General Montcalm used the new Fort Carillon as the base from which he launched his attack on British Fort William Henry on Lake George. In July, British General Abercromby led an army of 16,000 British and Colonial troops against a small French force of 3200 entrenched at Fort Carillon. On July 8 the forces were engaged on the heights just north of the Fort after Montcalm's forces had hastily thrown up earthwork fortifications. The
