Spring, 2002 French 116 is an intensive second-year course. As in all courses in French at
Dickinson, our primary focus will be to develop cross-cultural understanding.
This class makes use of multi-media and interactive computer strategies to refine your
communicative and cultural skills. The main goal of this course is therefore to help you perfect your basic
command of the structure of French as you come to be familiar with some
important aspects of French culture. It will satisfy the language requirement at
Dickinson, but typically, about half the students go on to a higher level in order
to expand on the following kinds of abilities:
-carry on simple conversations with a Francophone (asking and responding to
questions about personal information, narrate events).

You are eligible to enroll in French 111 if you have had between one to two years of French in high school (or earlier) or, on a case by case basis, if you have had significant prior experience learning a romance language and are confident you can learn quickly. This course requires regular work outside of class . In general, there will be 1.5 - 2 hours of homework every day. Moreover, since class meets every day, attendance is of the utmost importance and is absolutely essential to your progress. This is an immersion course that moves very quickly. You do not want to fall behind. At first, you may feel overwhelmed and perhaps frustrated by the amount of French you hear, see, and read. This is normal, but it will soon pass if you invest time in the course. An intensive approach to language learning is very effective in developing language skills; it will allow you to speak and understand French much more quickly than you would be able to in a traditional language class. The lessons are designed so that your knowledge of words, phrases, and structures will gradually guild as you assimilate the language.
