    History
[edit this] [Upload image] France was one of the earliest countries to progress from feudalism into the era of the nation-state. Its monarchs surrounded themselves with capable ministers and French armies were among the most innovative disciplined and professional of their day. During the reign of Louis XIV (1643-1715) France was the dominant power in Europe. But overly ambitious projects and military campaigns of Louis and his successors led to chronic financial problems in the 18th century. Deteriorating economic conditions and popular resentment against the complicated system of privileges granted the nobility and clerics were among the principal causes of the French Revolution (1789-94). Although the revolutionaries advocated republican and egalitarian principles of government France reverted to forms of absolute rule or constitutional monarchy four timesthe Empire of Napoleon the Restoration of Louis XVIII the reign of Louis-Philippe and the Second Empire of Napoleon III. After the Franco-Prussian War (1870) the Third Republic was established and lasted until the military defeat of 1940.

The Tour de France wouldn’t have happened if not for the rivalry of two French newspapers, L’Velo, the original and L’Auto, the upstart.
In 1902, Henri Desgrange, the L’Auto editor and Geo Lefevre met for a business lunch to discuss about a new format for a bike race they called Tour de France Cyliste. They were not really meeting for a new bike race but for a gimmick to increase sales of the flagging newspaper.
The first tour started in 2003. It had 6 stages and was 2,428 kilometers in length. The first race was rescheduled on May 31 but only 15 participants showed up. To attract riders, a 5 franc was dangled to the first 50 registrants and a 5,000 franc purse
July 1 and 60 participants later, the race was off. Since cycling in those days was considered a sport of high repute, a few riders rode using aliases while 21 of the 60 were pros. On July 19, 21 of the 60 finished the race. 20,000 spectators came to watch the first winner of the Tour, Frenchman Maurice Garin, a chimney cleaner when not riding his bike. Garin won 6,125 francs, bought a gas station and work there until he died.

People of France The people of France are among the healthiest, wealthiest, and best-educated people in the world. The country is highly urbanized with more than 75 per cent of the people living in cities. The French are known for their sophistication, their culture, the beauty of their spoken language, and their diverse accomplishments in literature, arts, and sciences. Even French cuisine and apparels have long been a source of national pride. Arts, Culture and Music of France With its culture, France has been able to influence the entire Western world, particularly in the areas of art and literature. French literary and artistic contributions during the Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment deeply influenced the path of Western cultural development.
It was during the Middle Ages that France attained cultural prominence in Europe. The 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries saw many of Europe's most talented artists and artisans being attracted to Paris. The 20th century was considered to be the 'cinema era,' with French cinema assuming a leading world position, particularly in the 1960s. World-renowned French cultural figures include philosophers, writers, painters, sculptors, architects, composers, playwrights, and film directors. Flag of France The flag of France has three equal vertical bands of blue (hoist side), white, and red, known as the French Tricouleur (Tricolor).

The story of Le Tour
Home Races Tour de France Follow the links below for stories, photographs, and race details of the Tour de France, year by year. The story of the origins of the Tour de France : an epic tale of a intrigue amongst rival newspapers against a backdrop of deep political division in France. Victory for the Little Chimney Sweep : The first Tour took just six stages to complete the hexagon, resulting in a convincing win for Maurice Garin, perhaps road cycling's first great champion. "The Tour is finished..." : One year later and the race was nearly finished by cheating riders and rioting spectators. Another easy win for Garin? Well, not exactly! A new formula is devised : A major rethink saw the race organised on points, with more stages, but no night riding. The new formula, saved the race, which thereafter never looked back. The first climbing star is born : Rene Pottier dominated in 1906, the year that saw the Tour's first true mountain stages, and the first excursion out of France. But Pottier's life was to be a tragically short one... Victory to "the Argentine" : 1907 saw victory go to Lucien Petit-Breton, nicknamed "the Argentine", after his rival Emile Georget was demoted for an illegal bike change.

Home Background Nineteenth Century France History Late 1788 – Louis XVI calls the Estates General, which had not met since 1614, into session to deal with the financial problems and the impending insolvency of the empire. Later 1788 - Elections for Estates General were held, the Paris parlement decides that votes in the Estates General would be by Estate (nobility, clergy, and commoners), not by head. May 1789 - Estates General meets and takes up the issue of how voting in the Estates General would occur, not the issue of the finances of the realm. June 1789 – Third Estate (commoners) meets on its own and declares the National Assembly to be the true representative institution of the people, then invites the nobility and the clergy to join it. At first rejected by the King, it is soon reluctantly accepted by the King. July 14, 1789 - Famine leads to soaring bread prices and riots. The hungry people of Paris stormed the Bastille, an old fortress that had been turned into a notorious prison. August 1789 – National Assembly declares the end of the old feudal regime, voids the feudal dues that peasants had traditionally owed to the nobility, enacts the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen, and begins drafting a new constitution that was not finished until 1791.
