Old Mobile capital of French Louisiane has been undergoing excavation since 1989. The sites of eight buildings out of more than fifty found have been partially or completely excavated, with the recovery of thousands of artifacts. Structure 1, the foundation of which is shown here, may have been occupied by missionary priests. Excavations always follow the same scientific procedure. After the overlying few inches of soil have been dug, and carefully screened through 1/16-inch mesh, any differences in soil color and texture are carefully mapped and photographed. These stains are our best clues for the appearance of the houses, made mostly of wood and clay, that once stood here. This is Structure 5 under excavation. Note the photo tower in the background. Some of the French buildings, like exca vated Structures 1 and 5, had foundation sills that were layed directly on the ground ( poteaux-sur-sole style). Others, such as Structure 30 shown here, were built with supporting wall posts placed in a trench ( poteaux-en-terre ). Surrounding this house was a palisade fence in another trench. Perhaps this small house belonged to a soldier in the garrison of Fort Louis, which stood not too far away.

Archaeology and history share an attachment to visual evidence, making the web a near-perfect medium for gathering primary information on these subjects. Whether your aim is casual browsing or methodical research, the combination of graphic images and multitudes of on-line sources and databases provides fruitful grounds for exploration. Sources are alphabeticized below in two basic groupings: a) general topics; b) links by country. Workshop Information
Archaeology is at a point where it can benefit greatly from the application of computer vision methods, and in turn provides a large number of new, challenging, interesting conceptual problems and data for computer vision. In particular, it provides new horizons for the development of shape theory for structured and free-form representation, deformation, and Bayesian inferencing from 3D and 2D data, invariants for matching and searching, conceptual grouping, geometric and feature databases, 3D immersion, and many more. The purpose of the workshop is to provide a forum to discuss how computer vision has been applied to archaeology problems and in turn define new interesting problems to work on. The format of the proposed one day workshop is a set of talks and a poster session followed by a panel discussion. A list of possible themes for submitted papers, meant to be suggestive rather than exclusive, is:

With an aerial perspective, it is obvious that these stones were aligned into a large grid, possibly to outline food gardens, and over time, the overall arrangement is still visible. This example clearly shows what can be missed If aerial surveys are not used in archaeological prospecting (Source: Aerial Archaeology Newsletter website).

    The Fur Trade
The French regime in Canada began in the early 1500s with the establishment of commercial bases, missionary outposts, and permanent settlements. France controlled two of the main entries into the fur-rich interior, the St. Lawrence and the Mississippi, while England controlled the other two, Hudson Bay and the Hudson River. Both the French and the British had to contend with the Iroquois Confederacy, which represented a very powerful military force in the southern Great Lakes region. Many native tribes were eager to exchange food and furs for European goods: as suppliers, they greatly influenced the economic impact of the fur trade. This influence made it necessary for both the French and British to form alliances with native groups. For the most part, trading posts consisted of a few huts surrounded by a stockade, located on a river bank near an Indian village.
