Iran, France to cooperate in archaeology Paris, Dec 16, IRNA Iran and France signed an agreement in Paris on Wednesday night to cooperate in archaeology. According to the agreement signed for Iran by Head of Iran's Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization Hossein Marashi and for France by its Minister of State for Cooperation, Development and Francophonie Xavier Darcos, the French experts are to offer educational and training courses for their young Iranian colleagues. Marashi told IRNA that the French archaeologists who have been the first to carry out projects in Iran are still interested in cooperating with Iranian experts. He also said that according to the agreement necessary measures to introduce Iran to French tourists will be taken in France as of next year. He said it was also agreed that French experts would cooperate with Iran in building 10 new hotels in the country. Marashi arrived in Paris Tuesday to explore avenues for cooperation between the two countries in such areas as cultural heritage, archaeology, tourism, museums and holding exhibitions.

“The initiative to start APAA was a call from the heart.”
Our goal is to bring understanding and raise awareness as well as ensure the promotion of the Afghan Archaeological and Cultural Heritage. This goal is realized through its teaching in schools and public venues internationally, including in Afghanistan and in the Afghan and multi-cultural Bay Area community. Our work also consists in promoting and assisting in the education of the international public about the inherent value of archaeological treasures to cultural identity, and to specifically focus on the plight of Afghan people regarding the loss of their cultural heritage. Through APAA Dr.Tarzi is assisting in educating the younger generations as well as the older ones. This is done by publishing children and scientific books as well as provide education and training programs and tools in Afghanistan to future Archaeologists so they may in turn become self reliant and efficient Professionals of the trowel and skilled restorers. Finally, APAA hopes to inspire future generations in having the incentive to learn about, protect and preserve their unique heritage and further educate themselves and others on the importance and value of archaeological and historical heritages.

Use of Remote Sensing In Archaeological Research

This project is a partial requirement for ES 771 , which is taught by Dr. James Aber of Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas.
INTRODUCTION

Remote sensing techniques have proven to be very useful in the search for archaeological sites. Techniques such as aerial photography, color-infrared photography, thermal infrared multispectral scanning (TIMS), and radar imaging have successfully been used to locate potential archaeological sites and add questions to known sites. This project will focus on the applications of aerial photography to archaeological prospecting, and how aerial photography has aided in locating archaeological sites which would never have been discovered at ground-level.
AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY USED IN ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH
Types of aerial photography commonly used for archaeological prospecting are black-and white film photography, color photography, and color-infrared photography. Black-and- white aerial photography records around twenty-two shades of gray in the visible spectrum, and is limited by atmospheric conditions such as cloud cover, haze, and must operate during daylight hours.

Historic records indicate that members of the French military were dispatched to the area beginning as early as 1681. In 1683 La Durantaye, a military commandant, along with a garrison of men was sent to the area. However, it was not until 1689 or 1690 was Fort de Baude built by 150 soldiers sent by Count Frontenac (whose family name is DeBaude). In the 1680s there was considerable French presence complete with trading and storage facilities. In 1689 Governor Denonville sent a large party of voyageurs to retrieve two years worth of furs that had been stored at Michilimackinac. Valued at 800,000 livre; this store of furs was quite large.
After returning from France with permission to establish Fort Pontchartrain (Detroit), Cadillac revisited St. Ignace in 1701 and convinced a good number of the Huron to accompany him in his new venture. Some French traders, the Jesuits, and some Huron remain. It is unclear whether any of the soldiers remained at St. Ignace, but it is clear that the importance of this area and the need for continued military presence was recognized almost immediately after Fort de Baude was closed. After years of unsuccessfully trying to control the traders, a garrison returned to the straits area in 1712. By 1715 several hundred men were back in Michilimackinac under the command of Sieur de Louvigny and second in command Sieur de Lignery

What is the history of the African-Archaeology Virtual Library ? - The African-Archaeology.Net web site has developed from the " Anthropology Resources on the Internet " (ARI) directory specialising in Anthropology. It was started by Allen Lutins in 1995 and taken over by Bernard-Olivier Clist in 1999. It has been felt for some time the african archaeology resources listed in ARI would benefit from a specific web resource bringing together the information gathered for the last few years and stored under various topics headings. Furthermore the founding of African-Archaeology.Net was given strength by the editor's major interest in the archaeology of Central Africa. Late in 2004, ARI became the Archaeology/Prehistory index for the History Catalog of the WWW Virtual Library. Since 2005 the African Archaeology web site is also included in the WWW Virtual Library.

    Discovering the Decades: 1750s
Alexandria Archaeology Looks Back at 250 Years of Alexandria History The 1750s Points in Time
    • 1750: Population of Fairfax County is 5,546. 1752: The "American Company performs The Merchant of Venice at Williamsburg 1753: Fairfax County courthouse established at Alexandria 1753: Philip Alexander dies 1754: Braddock's army defeated by French in Pennsylvania 1755: George Washington moves to Mount Vernon 1756: Commencement of the Seven Years' War 1757: British army under Lord Clive defeats French at Battle of Plassey in India 1758: George Mason IV builds Gunston Hall
The 1750s "As agreeable a Place as could be expected" But things were improving. Hugh West operated an "ordinary" or tavern adjacent to his ferry from 1745. Taverns were a growth industry; eighteen ordinary licenses were issued in the 1750s, although no more than six were operating at any one time, plus one at the Cameron settlement. Perhaps the finest was the "George," at the northwest corner of Cameron and Royal. It had six guest rooms, three fireplaces, a bar, a dining room and a billiard room. With all the house and boat construction, carpenters came to town, as did tobacco, grain and dry goods merchants, the first couple of doctors, and even a wig maker. Recreation reflected the very British interest in gaming; horse races were held outside of town, and the first school was financed largely by a lottery in 1760. The French and Indian War A Place in Time The crescent-shaped bay upon which Alexandria was founded offered proximity to the Potomac, but consisted largely of shallows and mud flats bounded by thirty-foot bluffs. The first citizens of Alexandria industriously altered the natural landscape to remove these impediments and fit their economic needs and concept of livability. The wealthiest merchants paid a premium for waterfront lots giving them the ability to construct homes between Fairfax Street and the bluff with private wharves and warehouses below. Work place and home were thus combined on the same one-acre "urban plantation" largely built and maintained by African slaves like John Carlyle's servants Jerry, Joe, Cook, Penny, Charles, Sibreia, Kate, Moses, and Nanny.
