INTRODUCTION
The UNDP and IILS have recently initiated a project on "Patterns and causes of social exclusion and the design of policies to promote integration". The project is intended "to lead to increased understanding of the factors causing individuals and groups to be excluded from the goods, services, rights, and activities which, in any given society, form the basis for citizenship". As a first step, regional reviews of the literature on social exclusion are being conducted. The terms of reference establish a structure for these review in four areas as follows:
  • "(i) Concepts of exclusion and how they have been applied;

Root Crops
"Root crops" is a convenient catch-all for a wide assortment of species scarcely less important as food plants than the groups discussed in the previous chapter. More than 500 million metric tons are produced annually for human food. The common feature of root crops is their fleshy underground storage organ, often a true root but sometimes a rhizome (tuber), corm, or bulb. Compared to cereal grains and legume seeds, food stored in fleshy roots and tubers is watery and less concentrated. Thus root crops are not generally as easily kept, transported, and marketed. Most are abundant in starch or sugar and low in protein and oil, and hence are useful "energy foods" but do not by themselves supply a balanced diet. Some consumed as fresh vegetables (such as carrots, garlic, parsnips, radish, and onions) are prized more for their flavor, vitamins, and subtle nutrient qualities than as sources of energy. Just the opposite is true of potatoes, sweetpotatoes, cassava, and sugar beets. World gross tonnage of the major root crops is not much less than for the major cereals, although, as noted, the dry nutrient content of root crops is much less (a potato, for example, may be 80% water). Annual world production of potatoes is nearly 300 million metric tons, sweetpotatoes more than 140 million metric tons, manioc or cassava more than 100 million metric tons. Nearly 300 million metric tons of sugar beets are harvested annually. World production and consumption of fresh vegetables is difficult to ascertain, but some 18 million metric tons of onions and 7 million metric tons of carrots make up part of the total.

The spirit of a person is without boundaries.
BLOOD DRUM SPIRIT
African American jazz is an international music in its ability to encompass elements of other traditions. Blood Drum Spirit is an effort to adapt the deep structures of Asian, African, and Native American traditions into the African American sound, a life force creating a space for the gods to descend, a positive alternative for what we see as a corrupt and parasitic status quo on plantation earth.
Over the past centuries there have been political and cultural struggles which have impacted the world's peoples, and our music is a non-verbal manifesto for cultural and political self-determination, in opposition to the enslaving uses of armies, technologies, exploitive economics and 'religion', by the so called 'developed countries'.
This album crystallizes my work over two decades in world music. I have researched, performed, and recorded with master artists from China, Philippines, India, Indonesia, the Caribbean, West Africa, African America, Ireland, and Native America; most importantly, I have lived these musical traditions and through their wisdom, come a little closer to what lies behind the music.
The gongs of Javanese gamelan, the rhythmic vocables of South India, and the drum-dance drama of Ghana bring us to another time and place. We use our blood through the drum in us to touch spirits, and offer this to you.
