@import url(../includes/styles.css); /*IE and NN6x styles*/ Percent Percent
A percent is a ratio of a number to 100. Percent means "per hundred." Thus, 20 percent, or 20%, means . A percent can be written as a fraction or a decimal. To change a fraction to a percent, find an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100. To change a percent to a fraction, use the given percent as the numerator of a fraction and 100 as the denominator and then reduce the fraction. Examples: To change a percent to a decimal, use the given percent as the numerator of a fraction and 100 as the denominator and then write the fraction as a decimal. To change a decimal to a percent, write the decimal as a fraction with 100 as the denominator and then write the fraction as a percent. Examples: Another way to change a percent to a decimal is to write the percent amount and move the decimal point 2 places to the left. To change a decimal to a percent, write the decimal, move the decimal point 2 places to the right, and add the percent sign. Examples: Sometimes a zero must be appended to change a percent to a decimal or to change a decimal to a percent.

by Gisele Glosser There are lots of creative ways to make math fun for your class. In fact, humor can serve as a mnemonic that leads to retention of material. Here are some creative ideas that I have used with my students. The Decimal Dance When teaching students to multiply decimals, I often find that they forget to account for decimal place value. To help them remember to mark the decimal point, I use the decimal dance. At the chalkboard, I work out the product of the numbers. Then I simply exaggerate the motion of counting decimal places. I make a large white arc under each digit until I have accounted for the correct number of decimal places. By calling this The Decimal Dance, students remember to account for decimal place value after multiplying decimals. It may sound silly, but it works. Click here for free demo lessons on Fractions, Decimals and Percent. Front Loading Most teachers start the school year by reviewing previously learned concepts. However, this is a time when students are most motivated to learn. Why not introduce a new topic they've never seen before? This technique, known as Front Loading, shows students that you intend to challenge them, and sets the tone for the year. I Front Load by introducing Integers in September. You can add to the fun with our unique Integer Football game (

Part A. Models for the Multiplication and Division of fractions. Part B.decimals and Percents. Part C. Fibonacci Numbers
http://www.learner.org/channel/courses/learningmath/number/session9/
In this session, we'll look at several topics related to fractions, percents, and ratios. As in earlier sessions, we'll look at graphical and geometric representations of these topics, as well as some of their applications in the physical world. As you work through the activities in this session, reflect on how mathematics is reasonable and logical, and how it is helpful to look for the logical patterns that emerge when you think about a mathematical situation. For information on required and/or optional material, see Note 1
Part A: Models for the Multiplication and Division of Fractions Part B: Decimals and Percents Part C: Fibonacci Numbers Homework
In this session, you will do the following: Understand how to use area models for computation with fractions and decimals Use benchmarks to estimate the "reasonableness" of answers to percent problems Understand the meaning of "percent" Solve percent problems with proportions Explore Fibonacci numbers
Throughout the session you will be prompted to view short video segments. In addition to these excerpts, you may choose to watch the full-length video of this session.
