    Book Review
by Suzanne H. Chapin and Art Johnson Review Review by Karen Soanes, Helen Barrett Montgomery School No. 50, Rochester, New York. This book is written for elementary school teachers who wish to deepen their own mathematical understanding. The premise of the book is that teachers cannot teach what they do not understand. Math Matters covers number sense, computation, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals, percents, algebra, plane geometry, spatial sense, measurement, statistics, and probability. The authors present a clear explanation of each topic, including related vocabulary, typical problems found in the elementary school curriculum, current research findings, and examples of student work and common strategies. Because the book contains a substantial amount of information, reading it cover to cover is not practical; instead, it should be used as a teacher resource. After a brief introduction, teacher activities are presented. Generally, these activities involve analyzing student strategies or solving problems. Answers and explanations follow each problem. Although teachers could read and understand the strategies on their own, this book would be ideal in teacher study groups or learning circles or as part of a professional development seminar. While I was reading, I was eager to talk with other teachers about what I was learning. If you have ever felt confused or wondered about a mathematical concept, then this book should be on your shelf. I gained many mathematical insights that improved the quality of my teaching, which is the goal of this fine book.

    NUMBER AND NUMBER SENSE
"Workers can't be afraid of numbers!"
    GM Parts Plant Manager
    Overview
Being able to handle numbers comfortably and competently is important to adults as parents, workers and community members. This competence relies upon having developed a kind of "number sense" about whole numbers, money, fractions, decimals, and percentages. Number sense includes calculation skills with numbers as well as a sense of number and operation and an ability to appropriately use estimation, mental math, computation, calculators or other tools. The learners, teachers and employers that were in the ANPN focus groups had lots of opinions about NUMBER. Learners ranked whole numbers, estimation, and fractions/decimals high as important math topics (3rd, 4th, and 6th); stakeholders concurred, ranking whole numbers fifth and estimation fourth. (Please see the appendices for more information.)
    Key Findings
Whole number computational skills are necessary but not sufficient.

The teaching of fractions continues to hold the attention of mathematics teachers where fractions, decimals and percentages were used interchangeably.

Teaching Fractions: New methods, new resources
Michael Meagher June 2002 ERIC Clearinghouse for Science, Mathematics, and Environmental Education DIGEST The teaching of fractions continues to hold the attention of mathematics teachers and education researchers worldwide. In what order should various representations be introduced? Should multiple representations be introduced early, or one representation pursued in depth once? Does it matter if fractions are introduced as counting or as measurement? What is the relative importance of procedural, factual, and conceptual knowledge in success with fractions? These and other questions remain debated in the literature. Following an overview of recent research on teaching and learning fractions, suggestions are offered for practice, for locating resources having direct application in the classroom, and for further reading in the research literature.
    Student conceptions
The domain of skill and knowledge referred to as "fractions" or "rational numbers" has been parsed in various ways by researchers in recent years. Tzur (1999) sees children's initial reorganization of fraction conceptions as falling into three strands: (a) equidivision of wholes into parts, (b) recursive partitioning of parts (splitting), and (c) reconstruction of the unit (i. e. the whole). Recognizing this division, he suggests that teachers consider one of these strands at a time in teaching rational numbers.

Mathematics Teaching Cases: Fractions, Decimals, Ratios, and Percents
Hard to Teach and Hard to Learn?
By: Carne Barnett Donna Goldenstein Babette Jackson
The 29 cases in this book are written by classroom teachers who hope that by sharing their experiences, others will learn. One purpose is to provide problematic situations that will evoke thoughtful analyses and reflection about teaching and learning. Ultimately, the goal is for these processes to become self-sustaining within the culture of the school and the classroom. A second purpose of this casebook is for teachers to build their own mathematical knowledge as it relates to real classroom situations. A companion facilitator's guide is available.
