contributed by Sash Hamidi Sash writes: 'Have loads of cards made up of FDP with equivalences e.g. 0.5, 1/2, 50/100/, 50%, half a shaded circle etc. You then get all the children into teams (4 - house colours) and literally throw all the cards in the air (works well in the hall). The children then work together to try and match together equivalents. The other children time the event, and generate excitement. I tried this to have an exciting launch into FDP, and it really motivated the children....noisy, but fun. The children like to compete for the fastest time.' BACK

Fractions to Decimals
FRACTION DECIMAL PERCENT Every fraction can be expressed as decimal (a number with a decimal point). One way to convert a fraction to a decimal is to divide the numerator by the denominator. For example, 1/2 is equal to 1 divided by 2, which is equal to 0.5. Fractions to Percentages A fraction can be expressed as a percentage by converting the fraction to a decimal number, then multiplying by 100 to obtain a percentage (since percent means per 100). For example, 1/2 = 0.5 = 50%. Worksheets: Express Fractions as Decimals and as Percents Each worksheet has fractions to express as decimals and percentages. Review: Fractions, Decimals, Percentages, Ratio and Proportion at Year 5
Fractions, Decimals, Percentages, Ratio and Proportion at Year 5 by Fran Moseley and Penny Latham
This file, written by Fran Moseley and Penny Latham, is one of the Beam Education series Successful Learning: Successful Teaching which cover years 3 to 6. Recent reports from Ofsted note that many teachers do not have the confidence or knowledge to teach mathematics to a suitable standard. These files provide teachers with a means of keeping core skills up to date as well as giving information about techniques and pedagogy. As is to be expected with any material from Beam, the structure of the lessons is well organized and easy to access: 24 lessons based on problem solving and centered on thinking, offering a range of starters, with visual, aural and kinesthetic opportunities throughout. Each lesson stands alone but there is progression through each section so the user can select his / her own route to suit the class. Assessment questions are given based on the lesson but also giving ideas for assessing children whose ideas have gone beyond the basics of the lesson. Differentiation and mixed age classes are all catered for with support and extension activities suggested. Practice games and activities provide consolidation and can be given for homework. In the margin around each double page, learning objectives, key ideas, resources and words and phrases are easily accessible. Such additions to the lesson plan, as well as being very informative, will help the non- specialist in particular to develop more confidence in their maths teaching.

INTRODUCTION This unit introduces the concept of rational numbers based on the concept of fractions of whole numbers. In the first section we explain the concepts of fractions and equivalent fractions as well as how to find a common denominator in order to compare fractions. In the second section we look at how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions. In the third section we look at other ways of representing fractions as decimals and focus on the concept of rational numbers The final part of the unit gives examples of how to apply fractions and percentages to everyday situations. AIMS
