Get started quickly with the integrated tutorials It is easy and fun to start using Ultra Fractal with the built-in tutorials. Starting with the basics, you will soon learn how to create your own fractals, change the colors, add layers, use masks, and even create animations. You can also download the PDF manual to print the tutorials. Create fractal animations easily with the new powerful animation features In Ultra Fractal 4, every fractal is potentially an animation. Every parameter can be animated individually. Animations can be as long as you want and use any desired frame rate. Editing animations is easy with the new powerful Timeline tool window, shown below. You can render animations with optional motion blur to image sequences or to AVI movies. Overview:
These days computer-generated fractal patterns are everywhere, from squiggly designs on computer art posters to illustrations in the most serious of physics journals. Interest continues to grow among scientists and, rather surprisingly, artists and designers. This book provides visual demonstrations of complicated and beautiful structures that can arise in systems, based on simple rules. It also presents papers on seemingly paradoxical combinations of randomness and structure in systems of mathematical, physical, biological, electrical, chemical, and artistic interest. Topics include: iteration, cellular automata, bifurcation maps, fractals, dynamical systems, patterns of nature created through simple rules, and aesthetic graphics drawn from the universe of mathematics and art. Chaos and Fractals is divided into six parts: Geometry and Nature; Attractors; Cellular Automata, Gaskets, and Koch Curves; Mandelbrot, Julia and Other Complex Maps; Iterated Function Systems; and Computer Art. Additionally, information on the latest practical applications of fractals and on the use of fractals in commercial products such as the antennas and reaction vessels is presented. In short, fractals are increasingly finding application in practical products where computer graphics and simulations are integral to the design process. Each of the six sections has an introduction by the editor including the latest research, references, and updates in the field. This book is enhanced with numerous color illustrations, a comprehensive index, and the many computer program examples encourage reader involvement.

PhysioNet tutorials are intended to provide hands-on introductions to the data and software available from this resource. Currently available tutorials include:
  • PhysioTour . An interactive introduction to this resource, highly recommended for first-time visitors.
  • An Introduction to the PhysioBank Archives . PhysioBank contains well over 1000 recordings of annotated, digitized physiologic signals and time series; this brief tutorial begins with an exploration of these archives using your web browser, followed by pointers on downloading data, information about the archives themselves, and recommendations of software available freely from this site for further study of PhysioBank data.
  • Exploring Human Gait and Heart Rate Dynamics . Use two sets of time series derived from human subjects to study changes in dynamics with age and disease, with a variety of methods including approximate entropy (ApEn) and detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA).
  • Exploring Patterns in Nature . A set of interactive tutorials drawn from current research, focussing on emergent phenomena (random behavior at the smallest scales leading to patterns at larger scales). Subjects include fractal coastline and dimension, measuring randomness, physical and chemical branching structures, biological branching patterns, diffusion, percolation, and motion on a fractal. These tutorials do not assume extensive knowledge of mathematics.

n. A geometric pattern that is repeated at ever smaller scales to produce irregular shapes and surfaces that cannot be represented by classical geometry. var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt"; Technology fractals A lossy compression method used for color images. Providing ratios of 100:1 or greater, fractals are especially suited to natural objects, such as trees, clouds and rivers. Fractals turn an image into a set of data and an algorithm for expanding it back to the original. The term comes from "fractus," which is Latin for broken or fragmented. It was coined by IBM Fellow and doctor of mathematics Benoit Mandelbrot, who expanded on ideas from earlier mathematicians and discovered similarities in chaotic and random events and shapes.

Fractal image compression is a lossy compression technique. Compression is performed by locating self-similar sections of an image, then using a fractal algorithm to generate the sections. Fractals are a very interesting field of study, but this page won't attempt to cover everything there is to know about fractals. For the most part, we will only look at fractals as they relate to compression. To learn more about this fascinating subject, try looking into some of the resources pointed to by the Fractal FAQ Search compression newsgroups for references to this topic Please be sure to visit Friends of DataCompression.info!
