From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Mandelbrot set , named after its discoverer, is a famous example of a fractal. The Mandelbrot set , named after its discoverer, is a famous example of a fractal. A fractal is a geometric object which is rough or irregular on all scales of length, and so which appears to be 'broken up' in a radical way. Some of the best examples can be divided into parts, each of which is similar to the original object. Fractals are said to possess infinite detail, and they may actually have a self-similar structure that occurs at different levels of magnification. In many cases, a fractal can be generated by a repeating pattern, in a typically recursive or iterative process. The term fractal was coined in by Beno®t Mandelbrot , from the Latin fractus or "broken". Before Mandelbrot coined his term, the common name for such structures (the Koch snowflake , for example) was monster curve Fractals of many kinds were originally studied as mathematical objects. Fractal geometry is the branch of mathematics which studies the properties and behaviour of fractals. It describes many situations which cannot be explained easily by classical geometry, and has often been applied in science technology , and computer-generated art . The conceptual roots of fractals can be traced to attempts to measure the size of objects for which traditional definitions based on Euclidean geometry or calculus fail.

    Fractals and Scale
How long is the coast-line of Great Britain? At first sight this question, posed by the mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot, may seem trivial. Given a map one can sit down with a ruler and soon come up with a value for the length. The problem is that repeating the operation with a larger scale map yields a greater estimate of the length (Fig. 1). If we actually went to the coast and measured them directly, then still greater estimates would result. It turns out that as the scale of measurement decreases the estimated length increases without limit. Thus, if the scale of the (hypothetical) measurements were to be infinitely small, then the estimated length would become infinitely large! Table of Content

  • Introduction
In discussing measurement, scale can be characterized in terms of a measuring stick of a particular length: the finer the scale, the shorter the stick. Thus at any particular scale, we can think of a curve as being represented by a sequence of sticks (Fig. 1), all of the appropriate length, joined end-to-end. Clearly, any feature shorter than the stick will vanish from a map constructed in this way. Of course, no one actually makes maps by laying sticks on the ground, but the stick analogy reflects the sorts of distortions that are inevitably produced by the limited resolution of aerial photographs, by the length of survey transects, or by the thickness of the pens used in drafting. There is an analogy here, too, with the accuracy or frequency with which any sort of biological measurements are made.

    56. Gumbycat's Fractint Tutorials . . . Where To Start!?!
Start by downloading the fractal to the right (1), (generated from the julfn+expFractint Each of the 3 fractals below are close relatives to fractal 3,
    http://www.fractalus.com/gumbycat/lesson1.html
This page best viewed at screen size 800x600 I have a lot of fun with the program Fractint, and I'd like to share some of that fun with you. Even if you don't know a great deal about math, if you learn how to use the program Fractint, you can create some really pretty fractals! So here are some hints on how I use Fractint v 19.6 to generate my fractals. Start by downloading the fractal to the right (1), (generated from the julfn+exp Fractint formula) and opening it ("load" it from the Fractint main menu) in your Fractint program. I've purposely started with the default colormap, to illustrate that the ugly duckling really can turn into a beautiful swan! With the default colormap, you can't even begin to see what you have to work with. So pick another colormap. I've picked my "flowers1" colormap. If you don't have a favorite of your own yet, I suggest using the Fractint "neon" map. (To do that, hit "c", then "l"(as in linda), then highlight the map "neon" and hit "Enter.") Now you can begin to see what this fractal looks like. The best parts of the fractal are those TINY little parts that are barely visible at this point. So you need to "zoom-in" and magnify the areas of local interest that you can identify by sight. This example (2) outlines four of the areas I see as interesting. If you were looking at this fractal at resolution of 800x600 or larger, you could see that these areas ARE interesting! If you're just looking at the little image, you'll have to take my word for it! You may find that the same pattern seems to repeat itself, in various sizes, throughout the fractal. This is an example of "self-similarity," which is a characteristic of fractals.
