BIOLOGY Investigating Fractals in Nature
Carolyn E. Rost
Mother of Mercy High School
Cincinnatti, OH
2001 Entrant Description
Our Math and Science Departments implement a multidisciplinary unit entitled Fractals in Nature. This curriculum utilizes fractal geometry to describe a variety of forms in nature. To qualify as a fractal, a shape must possess two characteristics: self-similarity and fractal dimension. Fractal dimension and self-similarity form the basis of a powerful new language that mathematicians and scientists can use to describe the complex shapes and patterns of the natural world. Common objects like coastlines, lungs and the green leaves of a tree canopy are good examples of fractals. Objectives
  • to present the concept of fractal dimension
  • to introduce the students to interactive computer simulations of fractals
  • to utilize the instructional approach to cognitive mentorship
  • to develop electronic journals of fractals
  • to import digitized photographs for fractal analyses
  • to encourage the students to accomplish original research
This project in Fractal Geometry lends itself to a Digital Learning Environment since students must import photographs of biologicals for analyses of fractal dimension. Training for this unit was provided by the National Science Foundation and the Christopher Columbus Creativity Institute. In 1995, as Project Director, I attended a two-week seminar entitled "Patterns of Nature" at Boston University. This program introduced me to the world of fractals and demonstrated the technological principles and software necessary to calculate fractal dimensions of natural objects.

MET prof's fractal antenna finds a strong reception
By Eric McHenry When Nathan Cohen first submitted a paper documenting his fractal antenna research to a scholarly journal, the editors thought it was a practical joke. "I submitted it in February of 1994, to be considered for the April issue of a technical magazine," says Cohen, assistant professor of applied science and director of science and engineering at MET. "They thought it was an April Fool's joke!" Nathan Cohen, inventor of the compact and highly sensitive fractal antenna (see photo below). Cohen photo by Fred Sway Although time and continued research have vindicated Cohen, he hasn't forgotten the episode. "I'm not used to being pegged a charlatan," he says. Not long ago, editors of the same journal came to him in hopes of soliciting an article. He'd be happy to write one, he told them, just as soon as they apologized for calling him a prankster. He has yet to receive that apology, and the journal has yet to receive that article. The whole exchange is illustrative, Cohen says, of the scientific community's occasional tendency to hector fresh ideas right out of its discourse. Essentially, he had discovered that bending conventional antennas into repeating geometric or "deterministic fractal" shapes helped save space and did not adversely affect reception. It's a very simple idea and that simplicity, coupled with the fact that Cohen is a radio astronomer by training, not a fractal mathematician, made the antenna an easy target for expressions of skepticism.

Chaos, Complexity and Compositional Aesthetics - Bibliography
Here is a bibliography of articles, books and reports which I am currently using in my research . It occurred to me that it might be useful to publish it so that others don't have to go scrabbling round the literature like I did (I'm all pale and wan from incarceration in the library). If you are interested in Chaos, Fractals or Complex systems and music then you will probably find something of interest here. The various references are sorted according to somewhat broad "pertinencies" which I find useful. Please bear in mind that just because an author is included in say the "Music-Event level" category does not mean the author avoids discussing fractal synthesis at all. This is my rough assessment of the main technique discussed. About four of the references below are oblique the rest are all extremely subject specific. A note to authors: If you consider that your work is miscast here, if you want to alert me to your more recent work, or if you want me to make a link to your web-pages contact me General Barnsley, M.; "Fractals Everywhere", Academic Press, New York, 1988.
