Reasearch Program: Our current research interests overlap and complement with many partners of the network. With team and we share our interest in dynamics of disordered systems, self organized criticality and fractal growth. Our collaboration has already produced more than 10 publications. We are also actively interacting with members of the NORDITA institute ( team 2 ) and with team 4 . The participation to the network is mutually very rewarding opportunity for us and other EEC partners. Through this network we expect to enhance our collaboration with EEC partners. In general we think the network partners will benefit from the experience we have accumulated in this field. We look forward to this to achieve even higher academic excellence. In particular we plan to pursue some recent theoretical breakthroughs in the modeling network, in collaboration with team 4 . Our aim is in particular to characterize the dependence of the ``fractal dimension'' on the mechanical and geometrical (form and dimensionality) properties as well as on the initial conditions. In the interdisciplinary context of biological evolution we plan to investigate the distribution of extinction sizes record in the fossil data, an issue which is of interest also of teams

Submissions to "Chaos and Graphics" Section
The following are some helpful hints regarding submitting papers to the "Chaos and Graphics" Section of the internationl journal Computers and Graphics Cliff Pickover is the editor for this journal section.
You are cordially invited to submit interesting, well-written articles for the "Chaos and Graphics Section" of the international scientific journal Computers and Graphics (Elsevier). I edit this section, which appears in each issue of the journal. Topics include the mathematical, scientific, and artistic application of fractals, chaos, and related. Your papers can be quite short if desired, for example, often a page or two is sufficient to convey an idea and a pretty graphic. (The journal is peer-reviewed, which means that several reviewers will judge whether the paper is suitably written, attractive, relevant, or novel. The English must be excellent.) I publish color, where appropriate.
The goal of my section is to provide visual demonstrations of complicated and beautiful structures which can arise in systems based on simple rules. The section presents papers on the seemingly paradoxical combinations of randomness and structure in systems of mathematical, physical, biological, electrical, chemical, and artistic interest. Topics include: iteration, cellular automata, bifurcation maps, fractals, dynamical systems, patterns of nature created from simple rules, and aesthetic graphics drawn from the universe of mathematics and art.

Print publication: Issue 20 (21 October 1996) Abstract. A quantum wave with probability density , confined by Dirichlet boundary conditions in a D-dimensional box of arbitrary shape and finite surface area, evolves from the uniform state . For almost all positions , the graph of the evolution of P is a fractal curve with dimension . For almost all times t, the graph of the spatial probability density P is a fractal hypersurface with dimension . When D = 1, there are, in addition to these generic time and space fractals, infinitely many special `quantum revival' times when P is piecewise constant, and infinitely many special spacetime slices for which the dimension of P is 5/4. If the surface of the box is a fractal with dimension , simple arguments suggest that the dimension of the time fractal is , and that of the space fractal is doi:10.1088/0305-4470/29/20/016

Abstract. Abdul Karim Bangura reviews Ron Eglash's book, African Fractals: Modern Computing and Indigenous Design for the Nexus Network Journal, volume 2, number 4, October 2000.
Book Review Ron Eglash. African Fractals: Modern Computing and Indigenous Design (New Brunswick, New Jersey: Rutgers University Press, 1999), 258 pp. To order this book from Amazon.com, click here for hardcover or here for paperback Reviewed by Abdul Karim Bangura E very once in a while, a book is published that significantly advances scholarship. Thus, I am not going to be apologetic for beginning this review by stating boldly that Ron Eglash's African Fractals is bound to be regarded as one of the greatest books on African studies produced in this century. This brilliant, scientific work contributes significantly towards shattering long-held myths and misconceptions about Africans (both on the Continent and in the Diaspora), the most pervasive and pernicious of which is the notion of Africans as inactive agents in historya people devoid of writing systems, technological background and culture. The book is divided into three parts with 14 chapters. The first part introduces fractal geometry for people without any mathematics background, fractals in African settlement architecture, fractals in cross-cultural comparison, and intention and invention in design. The second part discusses geometric algorithms, scaling, numeric systems, recursion, infinity, and complexity. The third part focuses on theoretical frameworks in cultural studies of knowledge, the politics of African fractals, fractals in European history of mathematics, and futures for African fractals.

  • Are fractals and chaos synonymous? ...
  • What is a multifractal? Q: I want to learn about fractals. What should I read/view first? A: Chaos: Making a New Science, by James Gleick, is a good book to get a general overview and history that does not require an extensive math background. Fractals Everywhere, by Michael Barnsley, and Measure Topology and Fractal Geometry, by G. A. Edgar, are textbooks that describe mathematically what fractals are and how to generate them, but they requires a college level mathematics background. Chaos, Fractals, and Dynamics, by R. L. Devaney, is also a good start. back to top Q: What is a fractal? What are some examples of fractals? A: A fractal is a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be subdivided in parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole. Fractals are generally self-similar and independent of scale. There are many mathematical structures that are fractals; e.g. Sierpinski triangle, Koch snowflake, Peano curve, Mandelbrot set, and Lorenz attractor. Fractals also describe many real-world objects, such as clouds, mountains, turbulence, coastlines, roots, branches of trees, blood vesels, and lungs of animals, that do not correspond to simple geometric shapes.
