HELLO - Come in and take a look around! PLEASE READ:-
As of mid-May '99 (and despite the catastrophic loss of my main drive at the end of April) the reorganization of this section of my site is now complete. There are NEW optimized animations on Page 3 and Page 4 and now (with one or two exceptions) those on Page 1 and Page 2, which were produced a couple of years back, have been optimized too. If you are already using any of the earlier Page1/2 animations you might like to update to the optimized versions - the saving in file size is shown alongside each animation on their index pages. For your convenience I have kept the file names the same as the originals. If you don't see what you want here drop a line to jill.lawson@ukonline.co.uk with the details and I'll see what I can do. These animated GIFs were produced with Microsoft GIF Animator, Ulead GIF Animator, PSP Animation Shop or a combination of these programs. IF YOU LIKE THEM, USE THEM! To save the images to your own computer just follow the same procedure that you would use to save a static image. Of necessity some of the animations (like the Flies, the Earwig and one or two others) begin with a blank frame - place these in the usual manner where required on your html page, bearing in mind that you should use an ALT=" description " tag as nothing will be visible in browsers that do not support animations.

Animated Fractal related Research Interests
The fractals created by this program are the limit sets of a small set of functions that are contractions of the plane composed with rotations. In each frame, I have changed these equations slightly. I am interested in answering the following about this situation:
  • If the functions are changed smoothly, do the fractal sets also change smoothly? If not, does the fractal dimension change smoothly? If the equations are changed smoothly in a loop, as the animated fractals I have displayed on this page are, can the images created be realized as the shadow of some higher dimensional fractal projected onto the plane?
A good book on fractal geometry is: Currently, I have abandoned research in this are to do work in other areas, but someday I plan to come back. If you have any questions or comments, email me: wphooper@math.umd.edu Back to the Fractal Animation Page Return to Pat's mathematics homepage

Speeding up fractal calculations
Fractal eXtreme 's fractal calculations are all done in low priority threads, one for each processor on your system. Because these threads are running at low priority, you can continue to use your computer without it feeling at all sluggish. However, if nothing else is using your CPU, these low priority threads will use virtually 100% of your CPU time - time that would otherwise be wasted! Unfortunately, this idyllic scenario only works if other programs on your system are well written and polite. Some programs, instead of quietly waiting for messages, actively watch for them - checking their mailboxes millions of times per second. This means that, while they are doing absolutely nothing, they are using up your valuable CPU time. This means that Fractal eXtreme runs dramatically slower. For example: with AOL 3.0 sitting idle in the background, Fractal eXtreme runs approximately eight times slower than without AOL. If AOL is the active application then the OS gives it even more CPU time, and

Baseline 119 KB 185 KB 3 sec These fractal movies illustrate the the kinds of fractal animation that you can easily create with the Fractal Odyssey software. These 10 animated fractals are from the 44 sample files that come with the Fractal Odyssey and Fractal Viewer software. Click a link to watch a movie. Each of the animated fractals is offered in two file sizes. The smaller file's movie image contains fewer pixels: image quality is only fair, but download times are shorter. The larger file's movie image contains more pixels: image quality is better, but download times are longer. The times listed are the movie run times. If you are concerned about possible long download times, start with the "Beating Heart" movie as it is the smallest. You can gage download times for the other fractal movies from that required for the "Beating Heart" movie. These animated fractals are in a compressed movie file format. As a result, image quality - even that of the larger files - is not nearly as good as the image quality of the fractal movies generated directly by Fractal Odyssey and Fractal Viewer.

Featured Movie: Evolution - by Mark B.
About the Author: Hi. I'm the author of the Fractal Odyssey and Fractal Viewer software. I first became interested in fractals when I read a book on mathematics which contained a few pictures of fractals. I was amazed at how relatively simple equations could produce such beautiful and detailed pictures. I was not satisfied with the few pictures of fractals in the book so decided to write a program to generate my own fractals. My teenage daughter enjoyed playing with the program so much that I thought others would too. From that inspiration I developed the Fractal Odyssey and Fractal Viewer software.
About the Featured Fractal:
Evolution is a Julia-type movie (a type of fractal) and is a good example of this type of fractal animation. Julia-type fractal movies are interesting for the overall shape of the fractal rather than for the small details. I thought that the animation sequence looked like a small, weak fractal evolving to become a larger, stronger fractal - hence the name. Legal Privacy Contact CSI FAQs

Bromberg, Ph.D. In 1998, a consortium led by Microsoft, Autodesk, HP and Visio submitted the VML (Vector Markup Language) specification to the W3C. I guess it must have died on the vine, because now it's been more or less dropped and we have a recommendation candidate for SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) language. To date, it seems that only Adobe has taken up the gauntlet on this and they have an excellent free plugin. While SVG is great and from what I've seen can be about 30% smaller than VML in file size, support for VML has been in Internet Explorer since version 5.0 and since about 96% of our site visitors here at eggheadcafe.com are using IE, I figured it would be a no brainer to use the IE native VML support and spare you the reader a 3 MB plug-in download. Maybe later on Microsoft will support SVG, maybe they won't cause they got their feelings hurt - who knows. The advantages of both VML and SVG are that they are pretty sophisticated, XML-based graphics description languages. Both are "scriptable" in the sense that it's possible to use client-side ECMAScript or other scripting languages to dynamically generate, scale, rotate and otherwise handle the generation and display of very complex images.

The After Dark module (called "Fractal" in the last version, but known as "Mandelbrot" in earlier versions) draws regions of the Mandelbrot set, which it then saves as Pict files. Comes with a program for viewing the picts and a mover based on the old Font/DA mover. As the author seems to admit, such a system is of little use now. There is no mention of this bundle at his website.

A Mathematica-based application for creating mathematical and algorithmic art, including fractal art. In addition to traditional graphic design tools (such as graphics transformations or utilities for creating wallpaper patterns), Artlandia features the built-in artificial intelligence algorithms that enhance the attractiveness of images and make the images more pleasing to human eye. As an example, simple commands exist for creating and applying natural color combinations or adding a carefully weighted, spatially correlated randomness into an algorithmic image. Artlandia is a professional-grade tool that has been extensively used for surface design, particularly textile design. The software is also geared to the needs of mathematical hobbyists and educator's communities. (Windows) Shareware
