126. Tools To Help You Plan Your Images - Mark A. Jaress
Digital imaging tools to assist people using Genuine fractals Photoshop plugin in planning scaling images, and understanding resolution.
http://jaress.net/gf_pd/
Tools for Digital Imaging and Other Fun Stuff I wrote these tools to assist those people who are using the Photoshop plug-in Genuine Fractals in planning scaled images from medium or smaller sized images to larger sizes. Each tool has a help file attached to it in case you need some further guidance. I sincerely hope you enjoy your experience scaling to large sizes.
Some Basics
I get enough questions about basic image resolution that are not related to scaling that I thought I'd build this little overview of resolution. It's very simple and right now, a work in progress. The ScalingPlanner This tool is designed to help you get the maximum quality out of your files when scaling with Genuine Fractals. The Scanner Planner The ScannerPlanner is designed to help you make decisions regarding scanning an image which will be used at a larger size. This tool will help you work with a smaller file for image manipulation, color correction, etc., which will, at the end of the editing/production process, be scaled to a larger size for output. It is designed to help you make decisions in finding the optimum source file size when you know what your final, target size will be. It is not restricted to this specific use, however.

number-theory . Perhaps the most fundamental entities in mathematics are the natural numbers: 1,2,3,4,5... They are something universal: It is a hard thing to imagine a mind which would count in a different way. But the style we write them down can vary: The decimal system based on the digits 0-9 is by no way the only or natural method to present numbers. It has just been arbitrarily chosen some time ago in history. The simplest notation is the binary notation which only uses the digits and 1. Computers always calculate in binary notation because it can be easily mapped to electrical devices: The presence of current means 1 and no current means 0.
How the Numbers can make Music
I wrote a program that counts. And because it is running on a computer it counts in binary notation of course. Then it adds up the digits in these binary numbers (i.e. counts the ones) and plays a note:

All of the Art you see on my pages is digitally created, these are not scanned in paintings or photographs. All of my work is created in the 'Moment'... that is to say, I have no preconceived idea of what I am going to create when I start out... it flows from the Mind, Heart and Soul and as the 'Moment' changes so does the Image. I use many programs, and with few exceptions these images go through numerous processes before completion.

Holding a new mirror to Nature
Like earlier discoveries in geometry, fractals could change the way artists and musicians portray the world From classroom to nightclub, by way of T-shirt and video graphics, fractal designs have made their mark on popular culture. Endlessly interesting and strikingly colorful, the images are now so popular that fractal posters and coffee mugs are a dime a dozen. The bold new geometry of the 1980s is in danger of becoming 1990s kitsch. Some artists, though, expect fractals to be more than a commercial gimmick. ``It's a new way of looking at space and form,'' says Rhonda Roland Shearer, a New York sculptress. ``For the artists, nothing is more fundamental.'' As precedent, she points to the Renaissance, when the discovery of geometrical perspective transformed the way that painters represented depth on a flat surface. The development of non-Euclidean geometry in the mid-19th century inspired wide-spread stylistic experimentation a few decades later among modernist painters who sought new ways of portraying space. As yet, fractals have not come close to delivering what Ms Shearer suggests they eventually might. In a way, that is because computers generate fractal shapes so easily. A fractal is a geometrical figure in which the same motif is repeated at several different scales; typically, such a design can be expressed as a simple mathematical formula, recalculated again and again. So, to produce even the most haunting of the images now a available, a computer needs only the smallest of human nudges. Benoit Mandelbrot, the mathematician whose eponymous ``set'' is the most famous fractal of all, wrote recently: ``The artist's taste can only affect the selection of formulas to be rendered, the cropping and the rendering. Thus fractal art seems to fall outside the usual categories of `invention', `discovery' and `creativity'.''

Fractal Music Composer
By Hugh McDowell
Fractal Music Composer
Version 2
By Hugh McDowell Hugh McDowell has produced a new version of his FRACTAL MUSIC COMPOSER program. In the First Incarnation (which is widely available on most Atari FTP sites) it was a set of 3 seperate programs that ran independantly of each other. In this "new" incarnation, he has combined these programs to form one composite application with many new functions and features. I am now happy to announce the FREEWARE release of Fractal Music Composer. Hugh managed to find the sourse code and give us an "unbridled" version of his program for all to enjoy. SYSTEM REQUIRMENTS FRACTAL MUSIC COMPOSER will work on all Atari computers: 520St,1040St, Ste, TT030. and since it does work on the TT, it probalbly will work on a Falcon. ST medium Res and ST HI Res. It is most impressive in St medium because of the color involved in the mandelbrot Images. However you will need to set your prefered colors in the CONTROL.ACC (supplied in the ZIP)It looks best in "reversed" display: that is Black background with White or "yellow" highlight. However the display on a Monochrome is still good.(St Hi) FRACTAL MUSIC COMPOSER(2) has three main parts: * MANDELBROT ZOOM PROGRAM is for exploring the Mandelbrot set, and, in the full version of the program, allows fractal Plots to be saved, output to a printer, and used to create music with FRACTAL MUSIC COMPOSER.

These files are encoded using MPEG-1 (for the 320x240) and MPEG-2 (for the 720x480). To view the MPEG-2 files you will need the proper codec. If your PC has a DVD player, you probably have that codec already. Otherwise, try a google search for "free mpeg2 codec". It seems browsers may have problems opening these files, so you might want to right click, then select "Save As" or "Save Target As" to save the files instead of opening them directly. Then launch them locally on your system with your viewer.

Welcome to Shineout Graphics. Some of our desktop wallpapers / backgrounds are computer generated graphics while others are digitat photos. More desktop wallpapers / backgrounds will be added to this site all the time.
The growing section of free desktop wallpaper offers amazing computer generated graphics, photos of flowers and plans and photos from Alberta (Canada).
Shineout is one of few sites that offer animated textures . They make amazing animated wallpapers and backgrounds. The animated textures are in animated GIF format so they can be used as animated backgrounds for windows active desktop. I have chosen animated GIF format because it is small in size and easy to manipulate.
Our free seamless textures make great still backgrounds. All the seamless textures are in JPG format. They can also be used as fills for text or any 2D or 3D graphics.
The digiatal photos were taken using Nikon Coolpix 3100.

JAVA Applets
As part of the Dynamical Systems and Technology Project, we have developed several JAVA Applets for use in exploring the topics of chaos and fractals. These applets are designed to accompany the four booklets in the series A Toolkit of Dynamics Activities , published by Key Curriculum Press Applets associated with the book Fractals include:
The chaos game . Yes, this is a game. Try to beat the computer by hitting specific targets via the moves of an iterated function system. This game allows students to understand the construction of the Sierpinski triangle via the chaos game. Fractalina. This applet allows you to set up the vertices, compression ratios, and rotations associated to an iterated function system and then compute and view the resulting fractal. If you have black and white monitors, be sure that you choose the appropriate colors for the points from the Color Selection button inside the applet so that you will be able to see the picture! Fractanimate. This applet allows you to string together a collection of fractal images generated by Fractalina into a movie. We encourage you to become quite familiar with Fractalina before trying to use this applet.
