Language teaching is not only teaching the main skills and subskills in a serious and formal manner. This workhsop shows a fun way of teaching and learning language by exploring oxymorons, puns, palindromes, synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, hyponyms, meronyms and others.
Reading comprehension need not be one of the dullest, most boring, or challenging subjects. The workshop offers the regular teacher a host of strategies that not only improve comprehension, but helps students improve their listening skills through interactive and entertaining activities that can be adapted to any level.
This workshop explores a non-traditional approach to classroom testing. From the regular pen and paper tests to performance and portfolio assessments, the presenters guide the participants in preparing their own non-traditional tests and assess their students accordingly.
Practical chemical applications that educate and make learning chemistry more fun.
In this workshop, participants are introduced to ways teachers can use to create caring, positive classroom environments while minimizing aggression, bullying and other undesirable behaviors. Participants will first identify common discipline problems and incidences of bullying in the Lebanese teaching context. They will then explore the factors in the classroom environment that can either hinder or foster the development of caring and positive interpersonal relations. A rubric is presented for rating the level of caring in the classroom, and consultation as a problem solving and conflict resolution tool is introduced.

http://www.fractalfoundation.org/schooltours.html
We are creating an educational program to teach kids about fractals and chaos theory. For several years, Jonathan Wolfe and Jonathan Leavitt have been giving informal fractal presentations in schools, ranging from kindergarten classes at Alameda Elementary School to the University of New Mexico Honors Program. It is always amazing to see how receptive and excited the children are when they see fractals for the first time, and they realize that what they are seeing is the beauty of math. Suddenly math transforms from something hard, boring, and useless into a fun, exciting, and magical realm to explore. We have seen it work again and again. We plan to do this on a large enough scale as to have a measurable positive impact on the science and math test scores of the classes we present to.

We are currently developing a rich curriculum of teaching materials, fractal activities and custom software for kids at several levels. Show kids that Nature is full of fractals, teach kids how to explore fractals by themselves with a computer, and suddenly we have a classroom of little mathematicians. Photo by Carole Devillers
Having learned how to create beautiful fractals of their own, the kids will be invited to participate in our Annual Fractal Design Contest. Each class will choose their favorite student-created image and submit it to the Foundation. These will all be featured in a gallery on this website, and the class that produces the finest of these images will receive a prize of a model balloon, printed with their fractal design.

Fractals, Graphics, and Mathematics Education

Reviewed by George Ashline
In the past two decades since Benoit Mandelbrot wrote Fractal Geometry of Nature (Freeman, 1982), fractals have grown in popularity and arisen in many contexts and forms in the mathematical, natural, and even social sciences. Some of the foundational ideas for this field can be traced back to the research of Pierre Fatou and Gaston Julia , who wrote important papers on the iteration theory of rational functions in the early twentieth century. Mandelbrot's pioneering work has brought fractal geometry to the fore and energized a new area of mathematics education. Creating a language for the study of "roughness" and developing the associated computer graphics, he provided the general theory for fractals, which offer new insights into understanding many aspects of Nature and the world around us. This is evidenced in such diverse examples as an island coastline or paper folding patterns or even a cauliflower head! Fractal geometry provides an accessible, interesting setting not only for mathematical research, but also for mathematics education, and there have been many curricular initiatives in this area. In addition to its impact on middle and secondary school mathematics, fractal geometry has influenced undergraduate mathematics, and has been the source for many undergraduate research efforts. For example, consider the programs for the
