Great Quotes From Anne Lamott
I could relate to these in that there seems to be an ebb and flow to emotion in my life too.
Grief, as I read somewhere is a lazy Susan. One day it is heavy and underwater, and the next day it spins and stops at loud and rageful, and the next day at wounded keening, and the next day numbness, silence.

On Simplicity and the Natural, Imperfect Life
Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler. Albert Einstein
This statement is my new personal motto. Simplicity as a way of life is a focused, mindful way of doing things. It makes what is important come to the forefront and what is unnecessary fall away. This doesn't happen naturally, however. I am learning how to do this in baby steps.
The idea of simplicity for me started when I realized that having too many possessions kept me from having as much time to live and spend with my family as I would have liked. Children can destroy things in their innocent energetic quests for a good time, and having things that are not exceptionally valuable serves me well. Sooo... we have old furniture and secondhand things, but the overall goal is not to have junk, but to respect the people who live here more than the junk.

... [Text Version] Foster Parenting The Department of Human Services is in need of caring individuals who can provide a safe and nurturing home environment for children who have been placed out of their home due to abuse or neglect. Foster Care is founded on the premise that all children have the right to physical care and educational and emotional nurturance. The family foster care program is designed to provide a substitute family life experience for a child in a household that has been approved and licensed by the Michigan Department of Human Services or in the home of relative. A relative may become licensed or may be unlicensed. Children may need foster care for a temporary or extended period of time. The primary goal during foster care is to reunite the child with his or her parents. The foster family plays an important role in the treatment plan for the child and family. Under the “team” approach, foster parents or relatives, together with the worker, attempt to provide the specific kind of help a child and his family need for reuniting the child with the parents. When the child cannot be reunited with the parents, the children are prepared for permanent placement, with relatives or non-related adoptive families. Under certain circumstances, a foster family may adopt children in their care. When adoption is not possible, the goal is to prepare the youth for independent living.

Is Foster Parenting for you?
By Jeffrey Silla
Are you interested in becoming a foster parent? Yes! Then you've come to the right place for thoughts and ideas that will help and encourage you in this new venture. In life, learning takes place when a person has a challenge to tackle. The challenge of foster parenting uses skills that are best learned when you have a foster child in your home "living with you". With this in mind, you will need to receive additional input from: parenting books, parenting videos, foster parents and training classes. Then you must put into practice what you learn! The best place to start your journey to become a foster parent is to visit a local foster parent. This person will be the key to starting and developing your foster parenting skills. The next best place to contact is your "Children and Youth" office to get information on "Foster Care Agencies". Typically after contacting the Foster Agency you will receive a large application. You will be asked to provide information on past residences, people you have lived with, reasons you want to be a foster parent, a physical with medical testing, references, how your home is set up, where the foster child will sleep, your education, job history and much more. During this process, you must also decide what type of child you would like to have in your home. So, you must decide if you have preferences regarding the child's age, their sex and the level of difficulty of care. This means on one hand there are children that can be responsible and mature for their age and on the other hand there are children that can't even feed themselves. Be fair with yourself and know your limits to deciding what type of child you would welcome into your home. Are you willing to do the work necessary to handle a child who has medical, physical, social, or other difficult problems? If you say, "Yes!" and make that commitment then you will be successful.

Information on foster parenting in Georgia: How do I start?
Information on foster parenting in Georgia. There is a critical shortage of approved foster homes. Check here for an overview of the approval process.
There is a critical shortage of foster parents in Georgia and most other states. Because children in foster care have often already been abused or neglected, foster parents require a great deal of training and preparation to be able to deal with these special, needy children with the least negative impact possible on their own families. In Georgia, persons interested in becoming foster parents begin by contacting their local Department of Family and Children Services, a branch of Georgia Department of Human Resources. Each county offers a free informational meeting, usually once a month, to give an overview of foster parenting. Often these meeting dates will appear in the local newspapers. Foster parents can be married or unmarried, live in apartments or homes, own or rent, and may or may not have birth children in the home. It is no longer an absolute requirement that one parent be home with the children, and child care benefits may be available for approved foster parents. Foster parents in Georgia are now paid $12.00 per day, per child, so foster parenting is not a money-making venture and, on the contrary, may be quite expensive. In addition to the per-diem rate, you may be reimbursed for some expenses, which will vary from county to county. Children in foster care are eligible for Medicaid, free lunches and breakfast at school, and some initial clothing allowance in most cases. Other items that may be reimbursed include school supplies and diapers. Most children in foster care receive assistance at Christmas as well.

Government social workers are overworked and underpaid. Kids are shuffled from home to home. Without support, once hopeful foster parents are becoming discouraged.
