Late Cretaceous ammonoid, Kossmaticeras, from Fairfield, near Dunedin. The specimen is one of many displayed in the Geology Museum, University of Otago. For more details, see Fordyce, R. E. 2003. Fossils and the history of life. Pages 35-64 in Darby, J. T., Fordyce, R. E., Mark, A. F., Probert, P. K., and Townsend, C. (editors), The natural history of southern New Zealand. University of Otago Press, Dunedin. 387 p.
By R. Ewan Fordyce
New Zealand has a rich and distinctive record of Cenozoic, Mesozoic and Paleozoic fossils. Fossils from the Paleozoic and much of the Mesozoic - the Triassic and Jurassic - indicate links with Gondwana and other more-ancient global geographies. Younger fossils, from the Cretaceous and Cenozoic, record the gradual development of New Zealand's distinctive modern biota. This website will feature some of the more-distinctive fossils studied by Department staff, and some of the more significant fossils from southern New Zealand.

His successor, Brian Marples , also worked on fossil Cetacea and penguins in the 1940s and 50s. After the Second World War, graduate students in geology significantly expanded the collections through field work - mostly mapping but sometimes field projects specifically directed at biostratigraphy. Emeritus Professor D.S. Coombs and the late Dr J.D. Campbell are particularly notable for their research on Murihiku (Triassic) rocks of the Southland Syncline. Doug Campbell published major contributions on Triassic sequences, on brachiopods, and lesserly on fossil plants; his work is honoured in a memorial volume, Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand volume 33, number 1, for March 2003. Campbell fostered paleontology amongst many students. One, Robert M. Carter, pursued research on molluscs, and was later on staff until the early 1980s. Another, brachiopodologist

Texas Fossils:
What is
Paleontology ?
Why study fossils? By studying fossils you will learn how modern life evolved through millions of years on earth.
In this page, we will:
Fossils Defined
The study of fossils is called paleontology. Fossils are found in layers of rocks all over earth.Geologists study rocks and minerals, paleontologists study fossils buried in different layers of rocks on earth. Fossils are definded as:
remains or traces of some part of the anatomy of once-living things that are older than our recent geological experience Once-living things refers to organisms large and small, simple and complex from the Plant and Animal Kingdoms. Anatomy refers to basic body parts, like teeth, spines, leaf prints or shells of once-living organisms or even the marks left behind like a dinosaur's footprint. Fossils are a record of the evoloution of life through geologic time. Paleontology, the study of fossils, has been invaluable in reconstructing prehistoric envrionments, identifying animals and plants living millions of years ago, and tracing the evoloution of living things. Fossils also make up a major contribution to the economy of modern Texas. Petroleum, natural gas and coal are called "fossil fuels" because the consist of former plants and animals.

Trace fossils (ichnofossils) record the movements and behaviors of the dinosaurs. There are many types of trace fossils. Even the lack of trace fossils can yield information; the lack of tail-furrow fossils indicates an erect tail stance for dinosaurs that were previously believed to have dragged their tails.
  • Trackways (sets of footprints) Dinosaur tracks , usually made in mud or fine sand, have been found at over 1500 sites, including quarries, coal mines , riverbeds, deserts, and mountains. There are so many of these fossils because each dinosaur made many tracks (but had only one skeleton) and because tracks fossilize well. Ichnotaxia (fossil footprints) have yielded information about:

The most common body fossils found are from the hard parts of the body, including bones, claws and teeth. More rarely, fossils have been found of softer body tissues . Body fossils include:
  • Bones - these fossils are the main means of learning about dinosaurs. The fossilized bones of a tremendous number of species of dinosaurs have been found since 1818, when the first dinosaur bone was discovered . The first nearly-complete skeleton (of Hadrosaurus foulkii) was found in 1858 in New Jersey, USA.
  • Teeth and Claws - Sometimes a bit of a broken tooth of a carnivore is found with another dinosaur's bones, especially those of herbivores. Lots of fossilized teeth have been found, including those of

Unit Plan
The students will learn about dinosaur's, which goes as follows: Eras and Periods) Pangea, Fossils, Paleontology, Dinosaurs, and modem animals. This unit plan is linked to the Arizona Science Standard #4 "Students will understand... how organisms changed over time and the terms of biological adaptation and genetics. (4SC F4)
Rational:
This unit covers the beginning and end of dinosaurs. Many people are unaware of the history of dinosaurs as far as the time period, fossils found, and the relationship they have with modem animals. To this day we are still not fully aware of the history of dinosaurs. We do not even know whether or not they had feathers or were brightly colored. Nevertheless, this unit gives the students that option of learning about dinosaurs. This unit covers the eras and periods, fossils, paleontology, dinosaurs and their comparison with modem animals.
Behavior Obiectives:
1. The students will be able to discover how long ago dinosaurs lived.

The strata representing the Devonian Period are especially well represented. Fossiliferous Ordivician and Silurian strata, and, to a lesser extent, Upper Cambrian strata, are also present in the State. In addition, New York State contains numerous deposits which were lain down at the close of the last Pleistocene glaciation, many containing plant and animal fossils.
