fossils paleontology is packed with mysteries about living things such as plants and animals that To solve these mysteries, paleontologists use fossils.
http://ology.amnh.org/paleontology/paleodefinition.html
Paleontology is packed with mysteries about living things such as plants and animals that lived thousands, millions, and billions of years before the first modern humans. To solve these mysteries, paleontologists use fossils. Fossils are the remains or traces of ancient life that are usually buried in rocks. Examples include bones, teeth, shells, leaf impressions, nests, and footprints. This evidence reveals what our planet was like long ago. Fossils also show how animals changed over time and how they are related to one another.
While fossils reveal what ancient living things looked like, they keep us guessing about their color, sounds, and most of their behavior.
Most ancient living things never became fossils. When they died, scavengers ate them, they decayed, or they were worn away by wind and water until they disappeared. Some were destroyed by Earth's heat and pressure. Luckily for us, some living things were preserved as fossils.
Most of the fossils of living things will never be found. They may be buried too deep, or they may be in the parts of the world where no one is digging. Many species probably left no fossils at all. Still, plenty of fossils have been found, and new ones are being discovered all the time. Each year, paleontologists continue to piece together the stories of the past.

Prehistoric Worlds Prehistoric Pittsford
The Eurypterids
The eurypterids were mostly aquatic arthropods commonly having a pair of swimming and digging appendages (see illustrations) and an anterior pair of food-gathering pincers, usually small, termed chelicerae.  See illustration at right.
Accompanying illustrations in the exhibit, Prehistoric Pittsford, show the morphological features of two common eurypterid forms ( Hughmilleria and Eurypterus .  Note the head region having a carapace with two eyes present.  Often, the eyes are located somewhat centrally as in Eurypterus ; sometimes marginally as in Hughmilleria .  Behind the head region are several body segments (tergites) ending in a spiked 'tail', the telson.  Many other features are noted in the drawings  EURYPTERID STRUCTURE
Two distinctly different eurypterids were common during Silurian time as represented by the fossils found in the rocks of the Lower Salina Group of western New York.  Both are described in the exhibit "Prehistorid Pittsford." The slender Hughmilleria socialis Sarle is the most common form found in the Pittsford Member and may have been  actively swimming in nearby rivers.

Organization of the regionals is taking place now and based on current interest, there will be a regional in the following locations: Being updated for 2004-2005! Regional Areas: ORLANDO SCIENCE CENTER: Your regional is everything above the dark line that borders Levy, Marion, Lake, Orange, Seminole, and Volusia Counties. If you are in these counties and NORTH, you will be going to the Orlando Science Center. BREVARD COUNTY: If you are in Brevard County, you will be eligible to participate in the Kennedy Middle School Science Olympiad. SOUTH FLORIDA REGIONAL: If your school is located in any other county, you will be going to Pompano Beach High School. This includes all areas below the dark line in the picture below, with the exception of Brevard County.

stranded a thousand miles from either ocean? How came they in the limestones
of Kansas, and were they denizens of land or sea?" E. D. Cope, 1872 Almost as soon as I put the first Oceans of Kansas Paleontology web pages up on the Internet in 1996, visitors began asking me where they could buy the book. I had to tell them there was no book. As the web site grew, it became apparent that there was a lot of interest in the information that I was providing. One of the major reasons that I decided to write a book about the oceans of Kansas was that visitors to the web site kept asking where they could buy one. Fortunately, the editors at the Indiana University Press agreed that it was a good idea and offered me a contract for the book in late 2001.

Visit digs North America and Australia and see fossils found there. In English, French and Spanish.
http://www.fieldadventures.org/
Welcome to Field Adventures in Paleontology! Let me take you on a personal tour of some of the digs I've gone on in recent years, both scientific excavations and personal collecting trips, and show you some of the fossils that are found there. Click on the green location on the map that you'd like to visit: All literary and photographic work contained in this website, except the few Alaska photos credited to Ed Kazzimir, is my own. My purpose in creating the site is to share my enthusiasm and knowledge of paleontology with anyone who is interested. Therefore, if you find information and/or photos which you would like to use in a work of your own, please feel free; my only stipulation is that they not be reproduced in a for-profit published work. If you do use them, a simple line crediting Lynne M. Clos as the source would be appreciated. Field Adventures in Paleontology check out my new book! Don't see the location here that you'd like to visit, or want to see more? Try the Fossil Sites Page! Also, if you'd like to view a booklet about fossils I've written for children, click here.
