Global Emergency Alert
The environmental situation around the world today is in crisis, from social and ecological perspectives, and we must sound the alert and compel an effective response from humanity in time to save life on Earth from otherwise certain destruction.
This is what the Global Emergency Alert Response campaign is all about. We invite students/activists to help by learning and sharing information about the nature and scope of the problems and solutions associated with this multi-faceted global crisis.
Most people understand that the combined effects of deforestation and fossil fuel combustion now imperil the Earth with global warming induced catastrophic climate changes evidenced by the recent devastating storms like Hurricane Mitch and the February tornados that left US cities looking like they were bombed out. What most people are still unaware of is that there are solutions to global warming that have been kept from public attention by government secrecy policies, disinformation, and the corporate controlled media information censorship.
While the scientists paid by the fossil fuel industry still claim that global warming is no big deal, others feel that it may already be too late to save life on Earth. Not only is the greenhouse effect of excess carbon dioxide contributing to the problem, but so also is the critically depleting ozone layer which threatens all the phytoplankton in the oceans with total destruction over the next ten years from increasing solar irradiation. These one-celled plants provide over half of Earth's oxygen production and if we lose them, Earth may wind up looking like Mars.

Carbon, in the form of CO released from the combustion of fossil fuels (oil, coal and gas), is responsible for nearly 40 per cent of global warming. Coming to grips with the greenhouse effect will mean drastically reducing our dependence on these fossil fuels and fundamentally changing the world’s energy system. Empires of black gold
They’re into coal. They’re into chemicals. Once they even bought up
the rights to solar power. But their lifeblood is oil. Dick Russell examines the
handful of corporations that benefit from our addiction to fossil fuels. Ever since the era of John D Rockefeller, Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, the global economy has been based on petroleum, electricity and automobiles. The transnational corporations that eventually arose from those men’s innovations today produce or market about half of the world’s oil, coal and natural gas. Nearly 90 per cent of the world’s energy is generated from these fossil fuels - and reserves are plentiful. Equally plentiful, as population and economic output grows, is the carbon dioxide (CO

Now that its heyday has passed, how will the industry cope? by Daliah Merzaban Until recently, local oil production was esteemed for both satisfying domestic consumption needs and generating valuable export revenues. Petroleum exports account for around 8 percent of GDP and 40 percent of total export receipts. Additionally, the long-standing petroleum subsidies system has encouraged gross over-consumption of fuel, throwing the very future of the industry into question.

Reporter: Andrew Fowler
MARK COLVIN: Remember the row back in June when the Federal Government released its Energy White Paper and the renewable energy industry saw it as a huge letdown?
The White Paper recommended a big investment in geosequestration – pumping carbon emissions from power stations and other polluters into holes in the ground.
The people who make windmills and solar panels, among others, got very little, and believed they'd been passed over.

July 21, 2004 Landmark Suit Seeks Dramatic Carbon Dioxide Emission Reductions from Power Plants The states of California, Connecticut, Iowa, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin, along with the City of New York, filed suit today against the five largest global warming polluters in the United States. It is the first time state and local governments have sued private companies to require reductions in the heat-trapping carbon dioxide emissions that scientists say pose serious threats to our health, economy and environment. Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said: "Our lawsuit is a huge, historic first step toward holding companies accountable for these pernicious pollutants that threaten our health, economy, environment and quality of life now and increasingly in the future. The eventual effects of CO2 pollution will be severe and significant - - increasing asthma and heat-related illnesses, eroding shorelines, floods, and other natural disasters, loss of forests and other precious resources. We must act, wisely and quickly, to stem global warming - - and safeguard both our environment and economy. Time is not on our side."

International Conference on Fifty Years of Nuclear Power: The Next Fifty Years
Nuclear Power: A Look At the Future
by IAEA Director General Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei
It is a pleasure for me to address this conference on the next fifty years of nuclear power. I saw a headline recently that perhaps captures the spirit of this occasion. It said, "Life Begins at 50." Some of us I am sure hope that that is true. But as nuclear power celebrates its 50th birthday, its future - while perhaps growing more promising - remains uncertain. Today I would like to touch on a few aspects of the evolving global scenario for nuclear power - briefly reviewing the current picture, outlining a number of key issues, and discussing what the International Atomic Energy Agency is doing to ensure that nuclear power remains a safe, secure and viable option for supplying energy needs. Past, Present and Future: The Growth Of Nuclear Power

Disincentives for Fossil Fuel Use
Alternative Approaches to Offsetting the Competitive Burden of a Carbon/Energy Tax Carbon Taxes with Tax Reductions in Minnesota Energy generated from fossil fuels is associated with a great deal of environmental and social ills. These include: air pollution arising in the combustion of fossil fuels; disruption and destruction of ecosystems where fossil fuels are mined and transported; national security and economic implications of the dependency on foreign oil; and finally, the potentially catastrophic consequences of global climate change. Ecological tax reform is one answer to this need for energy policy. Ecological tax reform, also called "green tax shifting," is a policy that combines the implementation of broad-based pollution taxes with offsets of traditional taxes, such as income and consumption taxes. Carbon Tax User Guide The State Carbon Tax Model was originally developed by the Center for Global Change in 1991-92 in response to a request by the Maryland Legislature for advice on possible new energy and environmental taxes. Since then, the Model has been adapted for wider use, made more user friendly, and tested by state officials and environmentalists in other states. The Center for Global Change is now making the Model available free of charge on the WorldWide Web for general use by state officials, the environmental community and other interested parties.

Hydrogen Storage
Once hydrogen is generated, the question becomes: How do we store the hydrogen? Hydrogen can be stored in a variety of ways, each with specific advantages and disadvantages. The overall criteria for choosing a storage method should be safety and ease of use. Listed below are the different storage methods available today in addition to some techniques that are still in the research and development stage. Metal Hydride Tanks Compressed Hydrogen Liquid Hydrogen Chemically Stored Hydrogen ... Liquid Carrier Storage
  • Metal Hydride Tanks
Metal hydrides are specific combinations of metallic alloys that act similar to a sponge soaking up water. Metal hydrides posses the unique ability to absorb hydrogen and release it later, either at room temperature or through heating of the tank. The total amount of hydrogen absorbed is generally 1% - 2% of the total weight of the tank. Some metal hydrides are capable of storing 5% - 7% of their own weight, but only when heated to temperatures of 250 C or higher. The percentage of gas absorbed to volume of the metal is still relatively low, but hydrides offer a valuable solution to hydrogen storage.
