To Guide Entry
Introduction
This unit has been written as part of a team effort with a colleague, Crystal LaVoie, to develop two complementary curriculum units, focusing on energy and the environment. The units are designed to be taught within a pilot Integrated Science curriculum for ninth and tenth graders during the 2004-2005 school year at New Haven Academy. New Haven Academy (NHA) is a new (founded 2003) interdistrict magnet high school, serving students from New Haven and 25 surrounding communities. Currently consisting of 65 ninth graders, NHA will eventually become a school for grades 9-12, adding a ninth grade each year until 2006. NHA is a member of the Coalition of Essential Schools, an organization whose mission is “to create and sustain equitable, intellectually vibrant, personalized schools and to make such schools the norm of American public education.” In keeping with this vision, NHA’s specific mission is to “provide a rigorous education that prepares all students to succeed in college”. The Integrated Science format will combine Physical, Earth, and Life Science. This unit will be used as a link between the Physical and Earth Science segments. Ms. LaVoie will introduce energy at the fundamental level first. Students will investigate the relationship of energy to work, and be introduced to the first law of thermodynamics. The potential, kinetic and mechanical forms of energy will be introduced and explored. Engine models will be introduced, and discussed. Ms. La Voie’s unit will culminate with an introductory lesson on the internal combustion engine.

The proposals will likely include everything from global taxes on e-mails and Internet use to a global gas tax and levies on airline travel. If adopted, American taxpayers could wind up paying hundreds of billions of dollars each year to the United Nations. U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan is among those leading the charge, having stated that he "strongly supports finding new sources of funding" for the U.N. through global taxes, according to Inter Presse . In fact, Annan made very clear his support for the imposition of global taxes in a 2001 Technical Note that he authored for a U.N. conference. "The need to finance the provision of global public goods in an increasingly globalized world also adds new urgency to the need for innovative new sources of financing," Annan wrote. The Note goes on to describe and evaluate the merits of several global tax proposals.

    Key Words
global energy problems, energy costs, greenhouse gas emissions, acid rain, climate change, dependency on foreign oil, fossil and nuclear fuels, politically unstable regions, primary energy demand, atmospheric, water, and land pollution, toxic waste
    Answer
Today, 80% of the world's electrical production comes from fossil and nuclear fuels, and virtually all transportation is fueled by liquid petroleum (gasoline). The World Energy Council projects primary energy demand will triple by 2050, as population grows to 8-9 billion and developing nations elevate living standards. The emissions from the burning of fossil and nuclear fuels creates atmospheric, water, and land pollution and toxic waste. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says this combustion is causing a discernible change of the global weather and climate patterns that will affect all humanity in decades to come.

    Fossil fuels
I've just finished reading "The Long Emergency" by James Howard Kunstler. Thanks to Tim Schlitzer for recommending it. It has changed the way I view the world. I used to think our very comfortable standard of living (when compared to our ancestors and most of our contemporaries) was based on the efforts and achievements of our predecessors, the result of linear human progress which would continue well into the future barring nuclear war or environmental degradation. This gave me hope that humans would overcome the challenges of war, terrorism, climate change, etc. I now realize that most of the comforts we take for granted, electric lighting, central heating and air conditioning, foods from around the world at our local supermarket, automobiles and roads allowing us to travel independently, commercial air travel, etc, are based almost exclusively on the availability of cheap fossil fuels. These cheap fossil fuels are an ‘endowment’ created by the sun over millions of years that we will burn up in 200 years.

    Ban Fossil Fuels Filed under:
By George Monbiot. Published in the Guardian 9th November 2000 Truckers in Britain are in trouble not because diesel prices are too high, but because their own trade associations, being partly controlled by the superstores, have demanded that the government allow ever heavier lorries onto the roads. This means that fewer vehicles are needed to shift the same amount of goods (though they have to travel further), with the result that the sector is now suffering from overcapacity. Their customers are, therefore, able to nail the truckers to the floor. It is a source of enduring mystery to me that farmers, like lorry drivers, are calling for cheaper, rather than more expensive, fuel. Cheap fuel has destroyed British farming. It has allowed produce from the other side of the world to outcompete our own. Within Britain, it enables superstores to centralise their distribution networks, playing farmers off against each other until they find the lowest national prices for the products they want to buy. The concessions Gordon Brown made yesterday will harm the very people who demanded them. By a marvellous stroke of irony, the deadline for government action the truckers and farmers have set (this Monday) is also the day on which the global climate talks open in the Hague. Their purpose is to encourage countries to ratify the Kyoto Protocol on reducing carbon emissions. Governments will be able to meet their targets only if they keep fuel prices high.

Church of the Brethren Statement on Global Climate Change The threat to creation by global warming/climate change is a cause for concern for everyone on the planet, but for Christians the issue is more than a matter of self preservation; it is a matter of faithfulness. Throughout its history, the Church of the Brethren has been concerned with good stewardship of God's creation. We are increasingly aware of the interrelatedness of all life. We acknowledge that energy use is linked to the ecological crisis facing the Earth, the health consequences for us and future generations, and spiritual well-being in relation to other species and our Creator. Climate change is an issue of justice. The industrialized nations, representing less than 20 percent of the world's population, are responsible for 75 to 80 percent of the annual greenhouse gas emissions. Yet those who live in poor and developing countries will be most seriously affected by global warming. A major challenge facing humankind is an equitable standard of living for this and future generations: adequate food, water, energy, safe shelter and a healthy environment. Human-induced climate change, along with land degradation, loss of biological diversity, and stratospheric ozone depletion, threatens our ability to meet these basic human needs.

WESTERN FUELS FILES SUIT AGAINST ENVIROS FOR COMMERCIAL DEFAMATION
    (Press Release April 17, 2000)

(Arlington, VA - April 17, 2000) Western Fuels Association, Inc., today, files suit in Wyoming federal district court against the Turning Point Project, Friends of the Earth, Earth Island Institute, Ozone Action, Rainforest Action Network, and the International Center for Technology Assessment, alleging "commercial defamation" under Section 43 of the Lanham Act (15 U.S.C. § 1125). Western Fuels claims its advocacy and coal supply businesses are both damaged by the Turning Point Project's publication of a full-page advertisement in The New York Times and materials on its website (www.turnpoint.org/global.html) that advocates elimination of coal use in electricity generation and promotes the commercial interests of companies that contribute to some of the organizations that "signed" the ad. December 13, 1999's, full-page advertisement (estimated to cost $97,000) pictured a mosquito under the headline "Global warming -how will it end?" According to Western Fuels' complaint, the ad makes false and misleading factual representations regarding effects of carbon-dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels, specifically coal, and an alleged human-induced overheating of the earth's atmosphere. Western Fuels Association general manager and chief executive officer Fred Palmer explains how the Turning Point Project and the other organizations' main avenues of attack in their ad is the use of apocalyptic predictions concerning future climate that have no scientific support. "They are attempting to portray electric generation from fossil fuels as a significant health risk, while in fact the opposite is true," he says. In the language of the complaint, the purpose of the false and misleading statements is to cast Western Fuels' product in an unwholesome and unfavorable light while promoting a competing product ("renewable" energy sources for electric generation).
