Burning fossil fuels is not very efficient... It has been estimated that a power station burning coal as its fuel may be less than 35% efficient! Add to this energy losses that occur as the electricity is transmitted from the power station to its eventual destination - let's suppose it is your home as you use a games console:
1. 5% of the energy in coal is 'lost' as it is burnt, 2. 65% is then wasted out of the top of the cooling towers, 3. 1% is transferred as heat energy in the 'step up' transformer, 4. 3% is transferred as heat in the transmission lines, 5. 1% is 'lost' in the 'step down' transformer, 6. Some will be transferred as heat as the electrical energy eventually reaches your console!
Offline Activity Use these figures to construct a flow chart to show energy wasted at each stage. Now go on and try the quiz. page 5 of 13

Following Introduction of Agency's Annual Report,
Most Speakers Express Support for Non-Proliferation, Additional NPT Protocols Also speaking this afternoon were the representatives of Pakistan, Slovakia, Cuba, Egypt, Peru, Republic of Korea, Brazil and Argentina (in a joint statement), Czech Republic, Mexico, United States, Belarus and Ukraine. The representatives of Iraq and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea spoke in exercise of the right of reply. The Assembly will meet again at 10 a.m. on Friday, 26 October, when it is expected to elect members of the Economic and Social Council. Background Technology The report states there were 438 operating nuclear-power reactors worldwide at the end of 2000. Over 30 countries were using nuclear power to produce electricity and six new power reactors had come on line. While no new plants were built in North America or Western Europe, the economics of existing nuclear-power plants had improved. Initiatives on nuclear fuel cycle and radioactive waste management included a symposium on uranium mining activities (Vienna, October). It was decided that public acceptance and confidence in solutions were critical with waste management. Investigations also continued into new energy production technologies reducing actinide generation and focusing on long-lived waste transmutation.

About Hydrogen
Hydrogen is the simplest, lightest, most common element, making up more than 80% of the known universe. It is part of every living thing and every drop of water, so without hydrogen, life could not exist. In its pure form, hydrogen is a colorless, tasteless, odorless, non-toxic gas.
Hydrogen as a fuel
To most people, hydrogen seems like a new fuel but we have actually been burning it for thousands of years as part of fossil fuels. Much of the energy in fossil fuels comes from the hydrogen bound up in their chemical structure. Gasoline is a particularly efficient form of fossil fuel because it has a large amount of hydrogen energy bound up in a small volume. This makes gasoline particularly useful for cars because space is very limited. But burning gasoline produces a wide range of environmentally dangerous byproducts as well as leaving us dependent on a limited source of fuel. A more effective way of using hydrogen as a fuel is to use it in its pure form, releasing the stored energy either by combustion or through a controlled electro-chemical reaction. Combustion is relatively clean, producing pure water, heat and small amounts of nitrous oxide as its main byproducts. But it is not very efficient because much of the energy released by combustion is in the form of heat which is not useful for propelling vehicles. A more efficient way of releasing energy from pure hydrogen is through the controlled electro-chemical reaction within a fuel cell. In this reaction, hydrogen and oxygen combine without combustion to form water and release electrical energy. This process produces much less heat than combustion, so more energy is available.

18. General Hydrogen - Hydrogen Safety And Reliability

http://www.generalhydrogen.com/tech_hydrogenmyths.shtml

Hydrogen Myths and Misconceptions
In recent years, particularly after the high-tech stock bubble burst, it became fashionable in the popular press to print negative articles about hydrogen. As Amory Lovins said, "A lot of silly things have been written both for and against hydrogen. Some sense of reality is lacking on both sides." General Hydrogen agrees. Here are some of the more popular myths and misconceptions, along with some information that we think gives a better sense of the reality. Misconception #1: We're not much closer to a commercially viable hydrogen-powered car than we are to cold fusion or a cure for cancer. Cold fusion and "a cure for cancer" are waiting for fundamental breakthroughs in basic science and nobody can predict when these breakthroughs will happen, if ever. The basic science of fuel cells, on the other hand, is well understood and major companies around the world have already built many fuel cell cars. There is still a lot of engineering to be done to make these cars cheap enough and durable enough to be commercially viable. But every major car company has detailed confidential estimates of how long it will take and how much it will cost to bring these cars to market. Misconception #2: Hydrogen is not an abundant fuel because there are no vast reservoirs of hydrogen under the ground, like there is oil.

worldwise wiseguide™ choosing better products energy products general information
The burning of fossil fuels coal, oil, and natural gas provides us with almost 90 percent of the energy we use to run our industries, grow our food, live in our homes, and drive our cars. These petrochemicals are unhealthy, polluting, expensive, and nonrenewable in short, they are not sustainable. At our present rate of use, we have enough worldwide reserves to last only another twenty to forty years. Sooner or later we are going to have to make major changes in our global energy use.
Renewable energy. To live sustainably, we will, within the foreseeable future, need to move from using nonrenewable fossil fuels as our source of power, to using renewable sources of energy. While solar, wind, hydroelectric and biomass already have limited installations as part of progressive utility companies, solar (and, to a lesser extent, wind power) is accessible to almost any homeowner (depending, of course, on the amount of sun at the specific site).
Though renewable energy equipment is not yet price-competitive in closely-populated areas that are "on-the-grid," installations in remote areas (where it can be very expensive or even impossible to run power lines) have shown that renewable energy sources can provide all the energy needed for a private home.

How Fuel Cells Work
A fuel cell harnesses the electricity created in the chemical reaction that occurs when hydrogen and oxygen are combined. Hundreds of fuel cells are "stacked" together, combining their electrical outputs into enough electricity to power a car. In the not-too-distant future, fuel cells will change how we live our everyday lives. They will power our vehicles, homes and office buildings more efficiently and with significantly less impact on the environment than fossil fuels. Fuel cell technology could end energy shortages and reduce reliance on imported oil. Before that day comes, however, four important challenges - hydrogen storage, cost reduction, durability and infrastructure development - must be solved. GM is working to solve these problems.
