Explor e Play and learn Network Surf Go back Fossil fuels Fossil fuels are called so because they have been derived from fossils, which were formed millions of years ago during the time of the dinosaurs. They are fossilized organic remains that over millions of years have been converted to oil, gas, and coal. Because their formation takes so long, these sources are also called non-renewable. Fossil fuels are usually found below ground. Coal is either mined or dug out while oil and natural gas are pumped out. Coal is widely distributed and is easier to locate than oil and gas. Fossil fuels take millions of years to make, but burn and disappear in seconds. Once they are used, they cannot be reused. People have irretrievably damaged the planet by extracting and burning these fuels. It is best not to waste fossil fuels as they are not renewable. We have to learn to conserve these sources of energy. Every year, millions of tonnes of coal is consumed as energy. This has led to global warming (greenhouse effect) and the depletion of resources. At present, the worldwide burning of coal, oil, and natural gas releases billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide (measured as carbon) into the atmosphere every year. Burning any fossil fuel means pollution of some sort. Even if the fuel is low in sulphur, the atmosphere contains nitrogen, which combines with oxygen at the high burning temperatures found in boilers, jet, or car engines. This yields nitrogen oxides, which like sulphur dioxide, dissolves in rain to form nitric acid. Both gases are poisonous to humans.

Electricity Generation

Generation of electricity using fossil fuels Overview Fossil fuels provide energy that can be changed into electricity. Fossil fuels include coal, natural gas and oil. Coal has formed from the remains of plants which grew in swamps millions of years ago. As sediments built up on top of the dead plants, and temperatures and pressures increased, the plant remains slowly turned into coal. Coal can be black or brown. The black coal is older and produces more energy than brown coal when burnt. Black coal is found in layers called seams and is taken from the ground by tunnel mining or open-cut mining. Tunnel mining involves digging shafts down to the coal seams and then tunneling into the seam to remove the coal. Open-cut mining involves digging a large open hole into the earth's surface to reach the coal seams from above and then removing the exposed coal. Oil and natural gas are formed from organisms that lived in the sea. Their dead remains collected at the bottom of very old oceans, were covered with sediments and, under high temperatures and pressures, changed into crude oil and natural gas. Oil and gas are usually extracted from the earth's crust by deep drilling.

A Taxpayer Perspective Cut fossil fuel subsidies...
Congress and the Administration should act immediately to cut fossil fuel subsidies
The fossil fuel industry is no longer an infant enterprise that can argue for government nurturing, but a mature industry that does not deserve government handouts. The sixteen subsidies highlighted in this fact sheet give coal, oil, and natural gas over $5 billion per year. The industry has already received more than its fair share, collecting $150 billion in subsidies from the federal government between 1918 and 1978, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Finally, many of the existing subsidies, such as funds for a rural electrification agency, continue to drain tax dollars even though their original purpose has long been fulfilled or forgotten.

For every 1 million tons of coal produced in Kentucky:
  • 130 miners are employed at an average of $46,000 per year;
  • $1,250,000 in severance taxes are generated;
  • $20 million is brought into the Commonwealth, since 70% of Kentucky's coal is exported.
"Health" of Coal Industry
  • the average age of today's miner is 48;
  • half of workforce will have to be replaced in the next 5-7 years;
  • lack of education and training programs;
  • 67% of mine foremen failed last exam;
  • no "career path" incentive for new miners;
  • need for modernized facilities and training equipment
Coal: at the Crossroads
  • steady decline in production since 1980 (a declining workforce mines less coal);
  • production in 2003 was 113 million tons (a decrease of 67 million tons from 1990);

http://members.aol.com/profchm/fossil.html
What are the Fossil Fuels and how are they utilized in Our Society?
It so happens that this is one of my favorite topics. Fossil fuels are fuels that result from the fossilization process of living tissue after millions of years. Coal and crude petroleum are the fossil fuel sources. Evolutionary Stages of Coal Development Coal comes in several developmental stages , peat, lignite, bituminous and anthracite forms of coal. The first two stages are very inefficient producing a small amount of energy per mass of fuel. Lignite can be gasified to natural gas which is a particularly clean burning fuel in itself. Lignite has also been liquefied to produce liquid petroleum fractions. But the gasification and liquefaction process are very expensive and are not cost effective unless the cost of crude petroleum reaches 60.00 a barrel or more. Bituminous (soft coal) and Anthracite (hard coal) are the stages of coal most often mined, processed , and used as fuel. Disadvantages In The Utilization of Coal There are problems with the use of this form of fossil fuel. First, the extraction of the coal from the ground can be very expensive. Most coal deposits lie well below the surface of the earth which means that special drilling , the creation of mine shafts, and the shoring up of these shafts must be paid for. In addition, there is the danger of mine explosions when deposits of natural gas or finely powered coal dust undergoes combustion resulting in an explosion. Breathing of coal dust by the miners leads to a condition known as "black lung". This adds to the cost of the

http://www.ecology.com/archived-links/fossil-fuel-facts/
Fossil Fuel Facts Fossil fuels have their origins in photosynthesis; the production of biomass from carbon dioxide and water by the action of sunlight. For oil, plant and animal life in ancient seas died and formed an organic (..carbon-based molecules) accumulation on the ocean floor. This was covered with sediment, and kept at high temperatures (several hundred degrees Fahrenheit) and pressure for eons, between 100 and 300 million years. Petroleum and natural gas resulted from this process, and where these deposits were trapped under a layer of impermeable rock, they have been saved for "our" use. But it is a onetime use. In the US oil was discovered in 1859, peak production was reached in 1970, and now we import more than half of the oil that we use. King Hubbert (check this name on http://www.google.com/ but for interest, not assignment!) introduced the model most widely used for estimating reserves of oil. He noted that the supply is finite, and so if we plot cumulative production versus time it must level off with time. Likewise, the rate of production, i.e. the production per year, must peak. This peak in oil production in the US occurred in the early 1970s, and it is fairly widely believed that the US supply of oil will be essentially depleted in the next ten years or so. It is estimated that world supply will peak in about 25 years, but that prediction is much less certain.
