    Abstract
We look at Donald Knuth's concept of " Literate Programming ," investigating exactly what it is and how it is used to assist conventional programmers. We then ask what lessons we can learn from this idea and if it is possible to apply them to Forth. If so, then what is required and what advantages to we gain by doing so. Finally some examples of Forth coding techniques are given allowing us to compare the more traditional techniques with Knuth's system.
    1. What is Literate Programming
Literate programming was created by Donald Knuth during the development of his TeX typesetting system. It is the combination of documentation and source together in a fashion suited for reading by human beings. In general, literate programs combine source and documentation in a single file, referred to as a WEB. Literate programming tools then parse the file to produce either readable documentation or compilable source. All the original work revolves around a particular literate programming tool called WEB. Max-FORTH IN A NUTSHELL
Max-FORTH closely follows the basic human methodology for dealing with language. Learning a “human” language starts with understanding a few simple word. (I.e.: YES, NO, STOP, GO, etc.). Next, phrases are made from those words. The meanings of phrases are named, and new words are born. Then, larger, more complex concepts are built from these simple beginnings. Complicated words are defined in terms of simpler words. Using the basics, larger and larger concepts are built as vocabulary grows. (E.g. from the few words given above, STOP GO STOP means JERK.) Suggesting the closeness of this linkage, the program segments in Max-FORTH are called words and are kept in a structure, called the dictionary. The dictionary is a linked list with all known words in the language. Max-FORTH provides a starter set of over 300 words. These are the basics, just enough to begin describing a programming task comfortably. Each word has a very precise meaning, not at all ambiguous. To learn Max-FORTH, a few of these words must be understood. From these simple words, low level phrases can be described. The phrases are given names. Newly defined words can be used in more complex definitions by their name. As the programming task progresses, the number of known words grows. While the later words can be more complex, they are generally easier to understand in terms of named purpose, more like the natural language equivalent.

    Misty Beach Forth
    What is Misty Beach Forth?
Misty Beach Forth is an implementation of the Forth programming language written in Java. Because it is written in Java, the Misty Beach Forth interpreter can be embedded in a WWW HTML page and launched as an applet. The applet appears below
Why was Misty Beach Forth created?
Misty Beach Forth was created to demonstrate that just about any programming language can be implemented in Java without suffering an unacceptable performance penalty. Java implementations already exist for languages without explicit pointers (Java implementations of Ada, Lisp, Scheme, BASIC, Rexx, and Python already exist. An Eiffel implementation is on-the-way). These languages all fit the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) fairly well because of their lack of pointers. Forth does not fit the JVM well because Forth is built on pointers, much like C. I hope that the combination of these other languages, plus Misty Beach Forth, provides a compelling argument that any programming language can be implemented either in Java or on top of the JVM. I think the ability to implement other languages in Java is important for several reasons:
    • Java as a programming language is not the final step in programming language evolution. As good as it is, we will eventually have better languages. It would be nice if those other languages could be implemented on top of the JVM, too.

    Forth Systems Programming
Forth is not just a programming language or environment. It is an operating system, a language builder, a methods repository and probably the best platform independent macro assembler in the world. Paul E. Bennett uses Forth as the basis for all programming tasks due to it's clean simplicity of philosophy and freedom to express problem solutions clearly. Programming in Forth is very much like writing new languages specific to a problem domain. As part of an on-going effort, Paul E. Bennett has devised a process of certification of all Forth Source Code produced. The certification process is akin to the Certificate of Conformity produced by hardware manufacturers relating to their products. The certification process is built on a robust audit trail generation.
    Technical Papers and Articles
Paul E. Bennett has presented papers at several Conferences (EuroForml, Software Quality Workshop, EuroForth and The Safety Systems Symposium) and to the Forth Interest Group regular meetings. Main topics of the papers are mainly about the establishment of proper design procedures, techniques and production of Mission Critical Software and Systems. He has also written several articles for Forthwrite and Safety Critical Systems Newsletters. See my Forth Coding Standards for a useful Forth coding style guide.
