Forth - A Language for Interactive Computing
The seminal paper on Forth, written circa 1970 by Charles H. Moore and Geoffrey C. Leach
A Brief Introduction to Forth
This description was developed for the Second History of Programming Languages Conference (HOPL-II), Boston MA. It's written by Philip J. Koopman, Jr.
Forth - An Underview
This document is intended to give an informal overview of the Forth programming system and perhaps more importantly, the method and philosophy of programming in Forth. It illustrates the language's history, most prominent features, usage, etc. Peter Knaggs, the author of this document, also describe the most common implementation method (based on the PolyForth system from FORTH, Inc.).
American National Standard Forth
This is the online version of the draft proposal 6 of the American National Standard Forth document, the freely available version of this standard description. ANS-Forth is the modern standard for the zenlike programming environment invented by Mr. Charles Moore in 1969. Also take a quick look at the ANS Forth FAQ , maintained by Peter Knaggs.

Welcome to RetroForth
RetroForth is a high quality, open-source implementation of the venerable Forth programming language. It is completely free , and can be used with many popular operating systems like Linux, FreeBSD, Windows, BeOS/Haiku, and SCO OpenServer. In addition, it can be run directly on raw hardware, or under the L4Ka::Pistachio microkernel.
Features
  • Small Size
Binaries are 4-10k, Source is 60-100k. The entire source tree is under 1,200 lines (including comments). Native Code
Compiles your code to native machine code. The technique used is subroutine threading with inlining of some primitives where it leads to tighter, faster code. We are also developing an optional optimizer to generate more efficient machine code. Portable
RetroForth runs on many operating systems for x86 PC's. Documentation
We provide a detailed handbook covering most aspects of the language and the internals. Code Library
RetroForth comes with a code library that provides support for common tasks, compatibility with other Forths, and some small applications. Rapid Development Cycle
New versions are released roughly every two months. Most reported bugs are fixed within a day or two, and we provide development builds that are updated nightly.

Encyclopedia - Forth programming language
Redirected from FORTH Forth is a computer programming environment developed by Chuck Moore[?] then at the US National Radio Astronomy Observatory ( NRAO[?] ) during the 1960s, and later formalized as a programming language in 1977, and standardized by ANSI in 1994. It features both interactive execution of commands (making it suitable as a shell for systems that lacked a more formal operating system ), as well as the ability to compile sequences of commands into threaded code for later execution. Its name is derived from Mr. Moore's belief that it was a " fourth-generation computer language[?] " on a computer whose file system allowed only five-letter identifiers Forth offers a stand-alone programming environment, consisting of a stack oriented interactive incremental interpreter compiler . Programming is done by extending the language with 'words' (named subroutines), which become part of the language once defined. Forth is usually implemented with an inner interpreter tracing indirectly threaded machine code , which yields extremely compact and fast high level code which can be compiled rapidly. A character oriented screen/block mechanism and standard

3.3 OVERVIEW OF THE FORTH PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE
Forth as a common thread
Since the majority of modern stack machines have their roots in the Forth programming language, an introduction to the terms of this language is in order. The Forth programming language was invented by Charles Moore for control of telescopes in observatories using small computers (Moore 1980). Because of its roots, Forth stresses efficiency, compactness, flexible and efficient hardware/software interaction. At the same time, Forth is sufficiently powerful that it can and has been used for a large variety of general purpose programming tasks including: database management, accounting software, word processors, graphics, expert systems, and scientific computations. Appendix B contains a glossary of the primitive operations in the Forth language. Some of the advantages of programming in the Forth language include ease of program modification and debugging, extreme flexibility, a very quick compile/edit/test cycle, high portability across a wide variety of machines, and compact source and object code (Jonak 1986). Kogge (1982) describes threaded code software environments, with an emphasis on the underlying mechanisms of the Forth language.
The Forth virtual machine
In order to solve the original telescope control problem, Forth needed several important qualities. It had to be suitable for real time control, highly interactive for easy use by non-programmers, and had to fit within severe memory space constraints.

    Some background information on Forth
Forth is simply the greatest computer language I've ever seen. My first language was BASIC on old IBM PC's and Apple ]['s. From there, I moved up to Pascal, then C. I tried to use object-oriented languages like C++ and Java, but I hated them. I even started to write my own language, but it was too heavily influenced by C. I gave up that project when I found Forth. It's simple, elegant, fast, powerful, extensible, and practical. Forth was developed by Chuck Moore, starting way back when he was in college in the late 1950's. In 1970, he named it Forth. Around that time, other people started to find out about it, and they were deeply impressed at how simple and powerful it was. You could write a program in Forth faster than you could in other languages of that time, like Algol and Fortran, and it would run faster and take up less of your precious memory. In the three decades since then, Forth has been used mainly by scientists, the military, and big industries, for everything from tiny single-board microcontrollers to giant networked databases. Meanwhile, mainstream computing has continued its stuffy academic tradition. Today's typical computer is bogged down with all the layers of bureaucracy that existed in the 70's, and then some. Windows NT 4.0 occupies hundreds of megabytes of disk space, and 40 megs of RAM, leaving hardly anything for programs even on high-end machines! Linux is better, but still big, especially if you use X-windows. By contrast, a complete Forth-based operating system (with a graphical interface and everything) fits on a single floppy disk.

    By Ed Keefe
FORTH PROGRAMMING ON THE HP 95LX Most programmers have heard of Forth. However, relatively few programmers have written software using Forth. Fewer still claim to have mastered Forth. The few who have readily admit that they are Forth fanatics. My Forth-programming acquaintances have all the characteristics of being "true believers." To hear them speak of their devotion to Forth, you would get the impression they had undergone some sort of "peak experience." The evangelical fervor with which they talk about Forth is unlike anything I've heard from C, Pascal, or Assembler programmers. They're the kind of people who have their T-shirts emblazoned with the motto: "May the Forth Be With You!" I tried learning Forth ten years ago when I was working with the HP 41C. I never did get to the point of thinking in Forth, so I do not claim to be an enlightened Forth programmer. I can, however, force myself into Forth when needed. UTIL Recently, Essex Marketing Services sent me a copy of UTIL for evaluation. UTIL is a Forth programming system for the HP 95LX and/or the Atari Portfolio computers.

    Forth Stuff, by Don Hopkins
forth know? if honk else forth learn then Forth is a stack based threaded interpretive language, that I used to program in it a whole lot. It has two stacks, unlike most other programming languages which have one. The operand stack is separate from the return stack. Arguments are passed on the operand stack, and flow of control is kept track of on the return stack.
Forth functions are called "words", and they have a header and a body. The name of a word can be any sequence of non-space characters, so Forth language documentation always includes a spoken pronunciation for each word. Other less hieroglyphic programming languages could also benefit from this convention.
The body of a Forth word typically consists of a sequence of pointers to other Forth words. This is called "threaded code". Other words are implemented as machine language primatives. There are different kinds of Forth interpreters that thread the code in various ways, but the essential thing about Forth is that code is a list of pointers to more code, which eventually bottoms out in primatives.
Forth syntax is very weird, yet extremely simple. The Forth compiler is part of the language, that Forth programmers can easily extend to define their own programming constructs and macros. Most forth systems also include an assembler with which you can define machine language primatives. You can write programatic macros that call the assembler and Forth compiler to dynamically generate code. Some Forth systems even allow you to dynamically link and call functions in libraries written in other languages.
