Religion and War in Yugoslavia
by David Jovanovic
August 20, 2001 Share this story by E-mail The 1990s wars in Yugoslavia have often been called, in literature and in the media, an ethnic conflict; endless newspaper articles and television broadcasts have analysed results of "ethnic" hatred in the former Yugoslav republics. However, the media sources of information on the Yugoslav conflict failed to mention that over 80% of the population of the former Yugoslav federation (20 million out of 22 million total) spoke the same language, Serbo-Croat, as their mother tongue. The ethnic sameness of these people was obvious to anyone who spent any time in the region during the wars. Still, both TV reporters and foreign policy makers failed to comment on the simple fact that the conflict in Yugoslavia was an intra-ethnic rather than an inter-ethnic one.
For instance, in his 1998 speech on Kosovo, Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan emphasized that: "...this time ethnically-driven violence must be seen for what it is." Mr.

Nongovernmental, alternative, anti-war media in former yugoslavia

Independent Media in former Yugoslavia
A good sign of a developing democracy is the unhampered presence of "alternative thinking," most often in the form of independent, non-governmental media. While this sure is not the case anywhere in the territories of former Yugoslavia, there is a handful of brave , struggling attempts of practicing "free speech" in public. Send them a letter of support, or subscribe to their publication here. Search for articles. On the night of March 2/3 1997 Albanian security police destroyed the physical space of alternative newspaper Koha Jone. They went cyber after that, and prompted inclusion of Albania on the Balkans Pages.

126. Ethnic Cleansing In Former Yugoslavia
The Peacenet's Balkans Pages list resources and information on killings, rapes, separations, and forced expulsions in the former yugoslavia.
http://www.igc.apc.org/balkans/ethnicl.html
More than two hundred thousands civilians have been killed in Bosnia and Croatia since the beginning of the war. Tens of thousands of women were raped , some of them more than a hundred times, while their sons and husbands were beaten and tortured in concentration camps like Omarska and Manjaca. Millions lost their homes due to a process called "ethnic cleansing." Refugees lost their homes and belongings and it is difficult for their relatives and loved ones to locate them now. They also rarely have access to computers with modems. Sometimes they live in abandoned railroad wagons, like in Cakovec , Croatia. Therefore there are various services which would convert your e-mail messages to printed or voice mail, try to find your friends and deliver the message. You can try them:

    NATO's objectives
NATO's objectives in relation to the conflict in Kosovo were set out in the Statement issued at the Extraordinary Meeting of the North Atlantic Council held at NATO on 12 April 1999 and were reaffirmed by Heads of State and Government in Washington on 23 April 1999:
    • a verifiable stop to all military action and the immediate ending of violence and repression; the withdrawal from Kosovo of the military, police and paramilitary forces; the stationing in Kosovo of an international military presence; the unconditional and safe return of all refugees and displaced persons and unhindered access to them by humanitarian aid organisations; the establishment of a political framework agreement for Kosovo on the basis of the Rambouillet Accords, in conformity with international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
Throughout the conflict, the achievement of these objectives, accompanied by measures to ensure their full implementation, has been regarded by the Alliance as the prerequisite for bringing to an end the violence and human suffering in Kosovo.

    TWO HUNDRED YEARS LATER
There are certain events in the history of a nation that become embedded in the collective psyche of the people. These are usually happenings of heroic dimensions that help over the years to define a nation and its people. Serbia has more than its share of these defining moments but 1804 stands out as one of the most noteworthy -more- IF KOSOVO WHY NOT IRAQ I recall that it was thirteen summers ago that I set off to Belgrade to take up my post as the Canadian Ambassador to Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia was then a strong and united country- more prosperous than most of the Eastern Bloc countries. Yet there were emerging signs of trouble. Urged on by the former Central Powers - Germany, Austria and Hungary – Slovenia and Croatia were already planning to separate from the Yugoslav Federation. -more- ANNIVERSARY OF SHAME On March 24 Serbian people around the world will recall with horror the shameful destruction of their country by the US led NATO Alliance. Three years ago, for 78 days and nights, NATO aircraft pounded Yugoslavia inflicting terrible damage on the civilian infrastructure of the country.

    The Bosnia War Crimes Tribunal
In the first international war crimes trial since World War Two, Bosnian Serb Dusko Tadic was charged with crimes related to the rape, torture and murder of prisoners in and around three prison camps in northern Bosnia. After 78 days of court, the trial of Dusko Tadic ended Nov. 28, 1996. A three-judge panel reached a verdict May 7, 1997, finding Tadic guilty on 11 counts of persecution and beatings. The panel, however, found Tadic not guilty of 9 counts of murder citing insufficient evidence. Eleven other counts were declared inapplicable. Tadic was sentenced to 20 years in prison on July 14, 1997. The panel recommended that Tadic serve at least 10 years of his sentence.
