Carpatho-Rusyns
Carpatho-Rusyns live in the very heart of Europe, along the northern and southern slopes of the Carpathian Mountains. Their homeland, known as Carpathian Rus', is situated at the crossroads where the borders of Ukraine, Slovakia, and Poland meet. Aside from those countries, there are smaller numbers of Carpatho-Rusyns in Romania, Hungary, Yugoslavia, and the Czech Republic. In no country do Carpatho-Rusyns have an administratively distinct territory. The information on this page comes from a brochure "Carpatho-Rusyns" published by The Carpatho-Rusyn Research Center Dr. Paul Robert Magocsi The original brochure was composed and laid out by Anatoli Bohdan Tkachenko Due to the limitation of only being able to display one character set within a document on the Internet - the text differs from the original in that diacritical marks and accents do not appear on certain words - this shall be corrected as soon as the technology becomes available to us. • Three-quarters of the Carpatho-Rusyns in Europe are found within the borders of Ukraine, specifically in the Transcarpathian region (historic Subcarpathian Rus'). In Slovakia, Carpatho-Rusyns live in the northeastern part of the country which is popularly known as the Presov Region. On the northern slopes of the Carpathians, they had traditionally lived in southeastern Poland, in an area know as the Lemko Region (now know as the Beskid Niski). After World War II, the Lemko Rusyns were deported from their Carpathian homeland. Among those who remained in Poland, a few thousand have managed to return to the Carpathians, although most reside in scattered settlements in the western (Silesia) and northern regions of Poland. Finally, there are several Carpatho-Rusyn villages just south of the Tisza River in the Maramures region of north central Romania, and a few scattered settlements in northeastern Hungary.

Work to be done for the EUROCLIO Acquisition Plan 2005-2008
The EUROCLIO Association and Foundation Boards and the Secretariat are working hard to give visibility to the organisations´ work and objectives in order to secure funding. Since EUROCLIO is dependent on funding, the acquisition of financial resources for both core and project activities is an existential task of the organisation. In this light we have arranged meetings with members of the European Parliament and the European Commission.
We are also seeking for the commitment of EUROCLIO members, who have a very important role to play in this respect. The Danish History Teachers´ Association, Dansk Histore Lærerforening, has successfully initiated support from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the project in Former Yugoslavia in 2003-2005. At the moment we are exploring possibilities to strengthen the network of history educators in Turkey together with our colleagues of the Finnish History Teachers´ Association. Obviously EUROCLIO is also interested in exploring ways of possible future cooperation with other organisations, institutions, (national) authorities or project programmes. If you as a Member of individual have any ideas and/or contacts that could be valuable in this respect, please contact Ms Willemijn van der Toorn at:

Key Elections Loom in Former Yugoslav Nations By GERRY FOLEY Political tensions are rising again in the area of the former Yugoslavia. Elections are scheduled in the next two months in Kosovo, the rump Yugoslavia, and Macedonia. In all three places, fundamental questions will be at stake. The neo-Stalinist regime in Belgrade has been pulling out all the stops to make the Sept. 24 elections in the rump Yugoslavia into a plebiscite for Milosevic's Greater Serbian nationalist line. For example, his minister of information, Goran Matic, told the somewhat oppositional magazine Nin (Aug. 31 issue) that the Democratic Opposition included parties representing oppressed national groups, which "are the continuers of the occupiers of Yugoslavia during World War II." It is notable that Matic did not even mention Montenegro, although the regime insists that it is going to conduct the elections there despite the opposition of the Montenegran government. The latter has called for a boycott of the elections in protest against changes the Milosevic regime has made in the Yugoslav constitution reducing the autonomy of the last republic in the "Yugoslav Federation" besides Serbia. In the same issue of Nin, there was an interview with the Montenegran minister of foreign affairs, Branko Lukovec, who announced that the Yugoslav Federation was "about to die." He stated: "That is not Montenegro's will but the will of the people who have been governing the Federation, who have led it from conflict to conflict to greater and greater isolation."

    Founding of the Fellowship

In 1914, an ecumenical conference was held in Switzerland by Christians seeking to prevent the outbreak of war in Europe. Before the conference ended, however, World War I had started and those present had to return to their respective countries. At a railroad station in Germany, two of the participants, Henry Hodgkin, an English Quaker, and Friedrich Sigmund-Schultze, a German Lutheran, pledged to find a way of working for peace even though their countries were at war. Out of this pledge Christians gathered in Cambridge, England in December 1914 to found the Fellowship of Reconciliation. The US FOR was founded one year later, in 1915. The FOR has since become an interfaith and international movement with branches and groups in over 40 countries and on every continent. Today the membership of FOR includes Jews, Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, and people of other faith traditions, as well as those with no formal religious affiliation.

will I be able to record stories
of people that are so close to me?
Am I different now? In the spring of 1999, Leon Gerskovic like many other Americans was watching TV news reports of thousands of refugees fleeing Kosovo and NATO planes bombing Serbia. Unlike most other Americans, however, Leon knew firsthand what was transpiring. The news reports brought back his own memories of the war in his native Croatia only eight years earlier. As history repeated itself before his eyes, Leon could not be a detached viewer. Instead, he resolved to return to his homeland to see how victims of earlier wars were coping. Leon interviewed no politicians, military leaders, journalists, or expert analysts. Instead he spoke to teachers, priests, farmers, veterans, young people, old people, even a garbage man. He sought no villain or victim. Instead of speaking to Serbs, Croats, and Bosnians as identities, he spoke to them as individuals. Armed only with small DV cameras, he and his team would journey into the heart of the Balkans to seek out stories of ordinary people: people who had long since been marginalized. People only looking to be heard. Instead of seeking hard facts in a place where truth is elusive, Leon sought to explore the personal realities of the people he met. In the process, his own history would come back to haunt him.
