Teaching about Conflict and Crisis in the Former Yugoslavia: The Case of Bosnia-Hercegovina. ERIC Digest.
Since 1991, a bitter and bloody war has raged in Bosnia-Hercegovina, part of the former country of Yugoslavia. The United Nations has tried to settle the conflict. And leaders of the U.S. government have considered sending armed forces to help victims of this war. This Digest provides facts and explanations about (1) the peoples and places of the former Yugoslavia, including Bosnia-Hercegovina; (2) the collapse of Yugoslavia and the crisis in Bosnia-Hercegovina or "Bosnia;" and (3) the causes, conditions, and consequences of the Bosnian war. Finally, sources of information and materials for teachers are listed. THE FORMER YUGOSLAVIA: ITS PEOPLES AND PLACES, 1918-1990. Yugoslavia was a country of about 23 million people located in southeastern Europe, across the Adriatic Sea from Italy. More than 15 ethnic groups lived in the former Yugoslavia. The majority of the population, however, belonged to one of six related Slavic groups: Serbs, Croats, Slovenes, Bosnian Muslims, Macedonians, and Montenegrins. The Croats, Serbs, Muslims, and Montenegrins speak a common language, referred to as "Serbo-Croatian." But religious and other cultural differences, which have resulted from separate historical experiences, have divided these Slavic groups.

Rebels staged an uprising in early 2001, demanding greater rights for the ethnic Albanian minority. The conflict set off a wave of refugees and the rebels made territorial gains. OVERVIEW
FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA After months of skirmishes, EU and Nato support enabled the late president, Boris Trajkovski, to strike a peace deal. Under the Ohrid agreement, Albanian fighters laid down their arms in return for greater ethnic-Albanian recognition within a unitary state. Acknowledgement of ethnic-Albanian rights was formalised in amendments to the constitution approved by parliament in late 2001. Ethnic Albanians account for about a quarter of the population. In August 2004, parliament approved controversial legislation redrawing local boundaries and giving ethnic Albanians greater local autonomy in areas where they predominate.

Introduction
Print Preview of Section Yugoslavia , former country in southeastern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula. The country existed from 1918 to 1941, when German-led Axis forces invaded and dismembered it during World War II. It was reestablished in 1945, but in 1991 political and ethnic conflicts led to its second disintegration. In the first period, Yugoslavia was a kingdom. In the second period, it was a federation consisting of six republics: Bosnia and Herzegovina (often referred to simply as Bosnia)
