Scholars trade stories, share research on religious revival in post-Soviet era BY KATHLEEN O'TOOLE Living in Siberian camps among reindeer herders as the Soviet Union collapsed, Stanford graduate anthropology student Nikolai Ssorin-Chaikov heard gossip about a secret stash of shamanistic religious idols. The Evenki herders and hunters of Northern Siberia had been baptized as Orthodox Christians in the 18th century as part of the expansion of the Russian empire. Their shamans, or priest-healers, nevertheless survived until 1938, when the Soviets rounded them up and deported them. If shamanistic objects had survived, it would show the power of the religion to withstand the second hostile invasion. After a two-day ride in 1995, Ssorin-Chaikov finally got a chance to see the treasure. "What we found was a bunch of medals that said 'for success in socialist reindeer herding,'" he told a conference of scholars gathered at Stanford on March 13. The story was one of many told on March 13 a here and the Center for Slavic and East European Studies at the University of California-Berkeley.

There is no more happiness in this world, brothers, than if a man has intelligence and education. Only then will he manage to live in wealth and only then, praying God, will he deserve Heaven, for once having enriched his mind with science, he will develop his heart and love his people. Kastus Kalinouski
Introduction
The Republic of Belarus is one of what is called for convenience the former Soviet republics. This country is relatively new to most of the world, and people in the West as a rule only know what rare comments in modern history textbooks can tell them. These comments are mostly related to the years after the 1917 revolution in Russia. However, the independence of Belarus is not occassional and even not the first in its history. Belarus has its own language, culture, heritage and, of course, history, as does any other country of the world. The reason why Belarus is still generally unknown to the world is that most of its historical facts were hidden or artificially assimilated with Russian and Soviet histories. The current situation in Belarus does not encourage a lot of information about the republic to be disseminated. I myself have learned most of the facts a relatively short time ago, when true historic evidence of Belarus past became available. I hope that these notes will be helpful for all interested people who are eager to find out more about the history of this old and original country.

Putin Says Past Experience, Including That Of Former USSR, Must Be Considered While Planning Operation In Afghanistan
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Saturday that past experience, including that of the former USSR, must be considered while conducting an international anti-terrorist operation in Afghanistan.
According to the RIA Novosti correspondent, Putin said during the meeting with American journalists that "the USSR's negative experience should not be neglected either.
"It is often said that the USSR lost the war in Afghanistan," President said. "But if we scrutinize the development of the situation there, throwing aside propaganda, we shall see that the USSR attained its goals." Putin recognized that "unpardonable political errors" had been admitted at that time. But, as for results in the military sphere, even after the Soviet troops were withdrawn, the Najibullah regime remained in power for three years in an unstable situation.
The political error, Putin said, was that the Najibullah's government did not have support among different ethnic groups and political forces in the country, nor was it supported by most countries of the world." The President mentioned that the Soviet government could not help but make such a mistake. It was pre-determined by the bipolar international system based on ideologies. "Now there is no split like that, and we should not repeat the error". "This is the goal of the anti-terrorist coalition.", Putin concluded.

Finland
History and Government
History: In recent years, the main change in the political landscape has been caused by the emergence of the right-wing National Coalition Party (Kokoomus, referred to as ‘Kok’). Finland’s long-serving President, Mauno Koivisto, the architect of its delicate balancing act between East and West, stood down in 1993, after two terms. He was replaced by the SDP candidate, former senior UN official Martti Ahtisaari. He was succeeded in turn by another Social Democrat, Tarja Halonen – the first woman to hold the post – at the beginning of 2000. The SDP has also dominated successive coalition governments. Paavo Lipponen, the leader of the SDP, assumed the post of Prime Minister following the general election of March 1995. Lipponen survived the 1999 general election, and finally ceded office following the most recent poll in March 2003. This was won by the Centre Party, whose leader Anneli Jaatteenmaki took over as premier, although the Social Democrats were brought into the new coalition government along with the Swedish People’s party, which represents Finland’s ethnic Swedish population. Jaatteenmaki’s tenure was short-lived. Brought down by a political scandal, he was replaced in June 2003 by Martti Vanhanen.
Government: The constitution allows for a President, who is Head of State, and a single-chamber Assembly, the Eduskunta. The President is elected by direct popular vote for a term of six years, while the 200-strong Parliament is elected every four years.

Home About Us News Tech Support ... Contact Us The Origins of TRIZ During the late 1940s, Genrich Altshuller, the originator of TRIZ, was working in the patent department of the Soviet navy. His primary responsibility was to assist inventors in filing patents, but because he was himself a gifted inventor (he received his first patent at the age of 14), he was often asked for help in solving problems encountered during the innovation process. Assuming that methods existed to help people solve creative problems, Altshuller went to the library and began researching. He found studies based upon the notion that, since innovation is a product of the human mind, the process can be improved using psychological techniques. Several methods (such as brainstorming) had been developed to overcome psychological inertia that is, to help people generate ideas "outside the box." But Altshuller soon began to realize the difficulty of obtaining objective information on the innovation process through psychological means, as the results were neither measurable nor reliable. In contrast, he reasoned, technical information is objective in nature. While there are no tools that allow us inside the human mind to study the process of innovation, the results of this process can be easily observed by studying the inventions themselves, or the patent literature associated with them.

FOR FOUR YEARS, I drove an articulated lorry to, from and around the former Soviet Union, for London-based Kepstowe Freight Services. Sometimes fascinating, sometimes mind-numbingly depressing, but never, ever like your average 9 to 5 job. Here are some photos taken between 1994 and 1998. Tipping in Moscow. This warehouse was, in cold-war days, a nuclear bomb shelter, and still had three-foot thick steel doors when I tipped there, delivering photographic equipment. The truck is a Scania 112, the trailer is a "temperature-controlled trailer". More commonly known as "fridges", we often used these trailers in winter to prevent goods from freezing, in outside temperatures of -40 degrees. The first thing that greets you on crossing the border from Poland into Belarus, at the Bobrowniki/ Berastavitsa 2 border crossing. From here, it`s about 1200km to Moscow. The sign reads "enjoy your journey" I've stopped to pay yet another fine for a fabricated transgression of the law. Expect this about a dozen times a day. The usual fine is a packet of Marlboro or a bar of chocolate, or a dollar or two "byez kvittansia" (without a receipt).
