Victor Glushkov - Founder of Information Technologies in former USSR
According to Essays on history of Computer Science and Technology in Ukraine" author Boris Malinovsky The importance of scientist's works is not always recognized by his contemporaries. The real appreciation comes much later when scientific results and ideas are verified by the time. Outstanding contribution into cybernetics, mathematics, and computer technologies made by Victor Michailovich Glushkov was greatly appreciated when he was still alive. But with the time passing by, it became evident that in the process of his creative activities he managed to aim his wide knowledge at development of a new scientific branch - information technologies. Glushkov became a founder of this science in former USSR. Thanks to his efforts in 60's and 70's fundamental and applied studies were launched on the basis of the Institute of Cybernetics of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, which he founded. These studies formed what we now call information technologies. Unlike Norbert Vinner, Glushkov had included into cybernetics the problem of data receiving, storing and processing and what's more, he placed it on the first place.

3 Million March on May Day in Former USSR
By Mike Davidow, in People's Weekly World
13 May 1995, p. 15
Three million march on May Day in former USSR - this was the estimate of the trade unions of Russia which marched with the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) in Moscow and other cities. In Moscow, 50,000 marched in bitter cold under the blue streamers of the Independent Trade Unions and the red banners of the CPRF. It was the most significant demonstration thus far of labor, Left, Left of Center solidarity. Moscow's unions, representing all sections of the capital's industries, were followed by the massed membership of the 50 city Party organizations and the followers of the Agrarian party, Union of Social Democrats, Greens and patriotic organizations. In the last six weeks, rents increased three times and food prices tripled. Frightened by the spector of a victorious bloc of Left-Left Center patriotic forces, the Yeltsin-Chernomyrdin regime has come up with a Russian variant of our two capitalist party trap: two twin party blocks are being formed, one led by Chernomyrdin, the Prime Minister, the other by Speaker of the Duma, Ivan Rybkin. The aim is to break away the Left Center from an alliance with the Left-patriotic forces and to isolate the latter. Read the People's Weekly World

History of Country Codes
Introduction... This is an attempt to trace the development of ITU's (formerly CCITT's) country codes assignments. Information was gleaned from vintage ITU/CCITT "Books" (i.e. the Recommendations which are the international telecommunications standards), and whatever else was available. There will be numerous details to be filled in (dates of changes, introductions, circumstances etc). Additional, corrected or updated information to this end would be welcome at wtng(at)wtng.info Document History... Format... This file is ordered first by time (when country codes were established, changed, deleted, etc) then within each particular time by country code. The initial list of 1964 is shown; only the changes are listed thereafter. The 1960 CCITT Red Book featured a list of country codes for Europe that was the precursor for the modern international telephone country code system. Whether this was ever available for subscriber use is unknown; this could have been intended for operator dialling rather than customer dialling. That list went as follows (* represents a code that remains in use in today's country code plan): Note from Dik Winter regarding 60-Luxembourg: "At least this country code has been used in the Netherlands (but at the same time the country code used for Belgium was 32). That must have been in the early sixties indeed. I do not have parts of a phone book showing it, I have only parts of Amsterdam phone books and when direct dialling from Amsterdam to Luxembourg was allowed much later the country code was changed to 352 as it is now, but I have noted it down from another Dutch phone book (presumably that of the province of Zeeland)."

Collection development policy review for International History
Introduction
The general policy for International History is to collect to research level, with the intention of as comprehensive a coverage as resources allow. Research level is defined as one where independent research with the published sources can be pursued. Exclusions and qualifications to this policy are mentioned below and in the General Policy Statement: see Principles of collection policy and Criteria for selection The policy for developing the collections in International History needs to be seen within the context of the complete acquisitions policy. The interdisciplinary nature of the social sciences and its publications means that subject boundaries cannot always be easily determined and described in isolation. Please refer particularly to International Relations Government , and Economic History Back to the top
