Russian Experiences: Life in the Former USSR and Post-Soviet Russia
by The Raven and Marie Claire
Was the Russia we grew up fearing truly a monster in disguise, or a country struggling through various leaders and methods to find itself? Russian Experiences: Life in the Former USSR and Post-Soviet Russia is an eye opening discovery of the true Russia. The Russia of the 'suburbs'; the Russia of the common worker; the Russia of the struggling family. No political grandstanding in this book, no. This is a story of its people. It's heart and soul.
Unless one went through it, experienced it, and lived it, one can't ever really know. But a man known as 'The Raven' lived through it, and with the help of co-writer Marie Claire, he tells his story of growing up in this Russia to the world. But 'Russian Experiences' is so much more than just a story, a riveting story of trial and labor, and of rebirth. It is, in its essence, a moving and dramatic tale of one man's quest for freedom; not just in a physical sense, but an emotional one as well.
The Raven was born into a period of turmoil. The economy was poor, even to the point of many teetering on the brink of privation. Proper education and training for many jobs and positions in the medical field was below standard and proper supplies, not only those needed for basic living, but more important, medical supplies were sadly lacking as well. No luxuries of supermarkets, shopping malls, fashion stores and private transportation. Because of a lack of proper medical facilities and care, The Raven suffered a hearing loss accompanied by a speech impediment as a young child, thereby forcing him from early childhood to deal with prejudice because of his handicap. For decades, the Russian ideal of perfection allowed no compassion for those suffering from physical or emotional handicaps, almost an 'Out of sight, out of mind' mentality.

The Free Jazz Scene In The Former USSR : Between Vilnius And Arkhangelsk
    Teruto SOEJIMA
Translated by Yoshiyuki SUZUKI and Cathy FISHMAN A Shortage Of Information On Jazz In The Former USSR The shortage of information on contemporary jazz in the countries of the former USSR makes it difficult for us to discuss this music. It was only several years ago that people in Western countries had their first opportunities to hear actual performances of jazz from this region. In fact, no former - USSR jazz album was released in the West until 1980, when London's Leo Records released an album which became the object of a great deal of interest and curiosity. Until then, many Western people doubted that standard jazz even existed in the former USSR. Today, the former USSR is experiencing such a severe paper shortage that only an extremely small number of music magazines and books are being published. Nikolai Dmitriev, editor-in-chief of "Jazz" - the only jazz magazine in the former USSR - laments, "We can only obtain enough paper to publish one issue a year." Because of this situation, we in the West have less and less information about music in this region. Another difficulty is the fact that many areas of the former USSR broke away and became independent states. Since the Soviet era, each area and ethnic group has incorporated its own folklore into jazz to create its own jazz mood and style. But the separation and independence of these areas has made it nearly impossible to gather comprehensive information on this music.

The Raven grew up in Baku City, the capital of Azerbaijan; his life was by no means easy. Because of the conflicts between native Armenians and Azerbaijan natives, he and his brother were not allowed to go to school for long stretches of time. Ultimately, The Raven and his family left Baku, where they had lived all their lives, and moved to a region around Moscow where The Raven continued his education. Yet even there The Raven had to struggle to gain that education, one that finally enabled him to rise above the poverty and narrow-mindedness of many of Russia's inhabitants.

DO try to learn the Cyrillic alphabetthat way you can at least use a dictionary and read street signs. DO expect people from the former Soviet Union to be every bit as complex, wonderful, irascible, funny, capable, illogical, and resilient as North Americans. These are people, not trophies. DO be willing to learn from those you seek to serve, both Christian and non-Christian. Dialogue isn't genuine without true openness on both sides. DO express appreciation for all that you honestly can. DO dress modestly and simply. Go easy on jewelry and makeup. Speak quietly, even if you are sure that no one around you understands English; think about the tastefulness and appropriateness of what you say and do. My personal rule is never to say anything in English that I would not want to be understood by everyone within earshot. DO check the cultural appropriateness of examples or illustrations you may wish to use in a sermon or lecture. Be sure your listeners know what you're talking about.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.)
The former USSR (commonly referred to as the Soviet Union) was formed as the result a weak Russian monarchy, an economic crisis, and over three years of unsuccessful fighting in World War I. Brilliantly using this situation, Vladimir Lenin led the Bolshevik Revolution and seized the government from the Tsarist regime in the Fall of 1917. Lenin was a previously exiled Marxist authority who founded the Russian Communist Party and became the first leader of the Soviet State until his death in 1924. He was able to unite people in support of Bolsheviks under the idea of “power for workers and peasants." His ideas of ending an unpopular war and redistribution of national wealth were also very popular. The Bolshevik Revolution was followed by a brutal Civil War which took millions of lives. The Revolution and Civil War tragically divided the nation and millions of people left the country. Among these were the brightest and most talented writers, scientists, and specialists including the airplane designer Sikorskiy, the writers Bunin and Nabokov, the singer Shalyapin, the artist Mark Chagal. The Soviet State was officially founded at the end of 1922.

News from Former USSR Kremlin Brings Back Stalingrad By Heikki Sipila A reference to Soviet leader Joseph Stalin is to appear on a Russian monument for the first time in 40 years, on orders of President Vladimir Putin. Putin ordered the word " Stalingrad" en graved on a memorial complex by the Kremlin wall, replacing Volgograd, the current name of the city, where one of the bloodiest battles of the Great Patriotic War was fought. It is less than two years ago that Putin said that reviving the name of Stalingrad " would do us no good." But this latest decision, posted on the presidential web site Kremlin.ru last month, said that restoring Stalin’s name on the monument was to "pay tribute to the heroism of the defenders of Stalingrad and to preserve the history of the Russian State." After Khrushchev came to power, countess monuments referring to Stalin were pulled down. Hundreds of names of cities, towns, villages, factories and collective farms named after Stalin were forced to be renamed on the orders of Khrushchev. Post Soviet-Russian leaders have resisted pressures from Soviet people and war veterans to restore the name of Stalingrad to the city on the Volga River, where more than 1 million Soviet and Germans died in five months of fighting in 1942-1943.

    Scholarship
The revival of Jewish studies in the CIS and the Baltic states after perestroika had its unique features, which were best summarized by Professor Avraham Greenbaum of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem: "The countries of the former Soviet Union, and especially Russia, have experienced a revival of Jewish (in the sense of Judaic) scholarship since the days of perestroika . And yet: as against the interwar scholarship whose practitioners were professional Jewish scholars ..., and who had the use of large libraries, the newcomers were usually trained for other professions ..., and often do not have even the basic works of their field at hand. This is something to be kept in mind when we admire their accomplishments and criticize their failings." Generally, the recent upheavals in Russia have opened a variety of scholarly activities within academic and higher educational institutions. Several themes and fields of research, which had been banned in the USSR, have acquired a legal status. Among them are Jewish studies and Jewish history. Jewish history as a field of research suffered complete excommunication from the humanities, and its sources - archival materials and research libraries of pre-Revolutionary Jewish scholarship - were inaccessible by scholars for some 40 years. That is why the new opportunities of the early 1990s changed scholarly preferences of a good many Russian-Jewish intellectuals. Many historians and philologists, archivists and librarians, university professors and students switched to Jewish history and Judaic studies. Many amateurs - rank and file Jewish

Research, information and publication programs of the Jewish Heritage Society are devoted to the development of Jewish scholarship in the CIS and the Baltic states. All programs of the Society involve a wide range of scholars and research institutions.
    • Preprints and reprints publication program
For many Judaica scholars in the former USSR a publication of a scholarly work in the JHS Preprints series is the first and often the only opportunity to share their ideas with colleagues.
    • Depository and Bibliography programs
Scholarly works - research essays and articles, source studies and bibliographies - also become available through the JHS Depository.
    • "Jewish archive" program
The primary task of East European Jewish historiography is to explore and research the source materials on the history of Russian Jews. The JHS is consistently working on cataloging and publication of Jewish historical documentary sources from archival holdings of repositories in the CIS and the Baltic states. The JHS experts and members as well as archivists and librarians throughout the former Soviet Union are involved in this program. Nine issues of the "Jewish archive" series reviewing documentary sources of Jewish history in state repositories of Russian Federation, Ukraine and Belarus were published in 1994 - 1997.
    • "Vanished world" program
A forthcoming extensive data base "Vanished world" includes information about remnants of the Jewish past from Jewish communities, synagogues and private collections.

    Due to the termination of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics by the Resolution of the USSR State Council of November 14, 1991, the ministries and other bodies of the state management, including the USSR Gospatent, were abolished. The USSR Gospatent stopped performing its functions from December 1, 1991, due to which an uncertain situation was created in the field of industrial property protection both in the Russian Federation and in the other states - Republics of the former USSR. One of the main reasons for that uncertainty was the termination, in the CIS States, the legislative acts of the former USSR and, in particular, those on the legal protection of inventions, industrial designs and trademarks. By that time the single patent space was broken. In the territory of the independent States (subjects of the former USSR) an unfavorable situation was formed in respect of the invention activity, the creation of new kinds of equipment, goods, the implementation of new technologies, both domestic and foreign ones. The main lines for going out of the emerged crisis in the field of industrial property protection were: - establishment of an interstate system for the protection of industrial property;

Below is an exerpt by Mark Weber, published in the Journal of Historical Review, entitled "The Jewish Role in the Bolshevik Revolution and Russia's Early Soviet Regime: Assessing the Grim Legacy of Soviet Communism." (Jan-Feb. 1994, Vol. 14, # 1, p.4 )
"A solid understanding of history has long been the best guide to comprehending the present and anticipating the future. Accordingly, people are most interested in historical questions during times of crisis, when the future seems most uncertain. With the collapse of Communist rule in the Soviet Union, 1989-1991, and as Russians struggle to build a new order on the ruins of the old, historical issues have become very topical. For example, many ask: How did the Bolsheviks, a small movement guided by the teachings of German-Jewish social philosopher Karl Marx, succeed in taking control of Russia and imposing a cruel and despotic regime on its people?
In recent years, Jews around the world have been voicing anxious concern over the specter of anti-Semitism in the lands of the former Soviet Union. In this new and uncertain era, we are told, suppressed feelings of hatred and rage against Jews are once again being expressed. According to one public opinion survey conducted in 1991, for example, most Russians wanted all Jews to leave the country. But precisely why is anti-Jewish sentiment so widespread among the peoples of the former Soviet Union? Why do so many Russians, Ukrainians, Lithuanians and others blame "the Jews" for so much misfortune?
