UN SECURITY COUNCIL SUPPORTS YUGOSLAV GOVERNMENT PROGRAMME OF KOSOVO CRISIS SETTLEMENT
The UN Security Council and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan have voiced support for the Yugoslav government-sponsored programme of the Kosovo crisis settlement.
According to Belgrade reports, Serbia's Vice-Premier Nebojsa Covic made a report at a Security Council session and had a special meeting with Kofi Annan.
Security Council President Jean-David Levitte of France said after discussions that the coming November 17 parliamentary election in Kosovo should consolidate democratic processes in the province and would be a significant step towards realisation of the mandate of the UN civil mission to Kosovo.
Security Council members supported the registration of Kosovo Serbs which was approved by the Yugoslav government and deemed it necessary that all ethnic groups participate in the election. The Security Council Chairman stressed that Serbs' participation in the election would enable them to have a wider representation of their interests and positions in the political life of the province.
Participants in the session also spoke out in favour of the return of refugees and displaced persons to Kosovo. They confirmed the necessity to further strengthen security in Kosovo and "supremacy of law". The session backed the introduction of legislative acts on the fight against organised crime, illegal storage of arms and terrorism, and the consolidation of control by international peace-keeping forces outside Kosovo, said Levitte. The Security Council pointed to the importance of full support and implementation of Security Council Kosovo-related resolution 1244.

In the years leading up to the election, he used his considerable media skills to deliver frequent commentary on television and radio advancing his conservative positions. Although upset in the New Hampshire primary by George H.W. Bush , Reagan soon recovered in later primaries to win on the first ballot at the Republican National Convention. When negotiations over the vice presidential nomination with former President Ford broke down after Ford evidently sought commitments of considerable autonomy as vice president, Reagan then surprised many of his supporters by turning to Bush as his vice presidential choice for the campaign against President

Fact Sheet on the Accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant
Background
On April 26, 1986, a major accident, determined to have been a reactivity (power increase) accident, occurred at Unit 4 of the nuclear power station at Chernobyl, Ukraine, in the former USSR. The accident destroyed the reactor and released massive amounts of radioactivity into the environment. After the accident, access to the area in an 18-mile radius around the plant was closed, except for persons requiring official access to the plant and to the immediate area for evaluating and dealing with the consequences of the accident and operation of the undamaged units. Approximately 135,000 people were evacuated. Pripyat, the town near Chernobyl where most of the plant workers lived before the 1986 accident, was evacuated several days after the accident because of radiological contamination. It was included in the 30 km exclusion zone around the plant and is closed to all but those with authorized access. Thirty-one people died in the Chernobyl accident and its immediate aftermath, most in fighting the fires that ensued. There have been news reports of additional deaths, but details are not available. Delayed health effects could be extensive, but estimates vary.

Once the poster child for Mideast terrorism, Hizballah (Party of God) is rapidly emerging from the slums of Beirut and the economically depressed southern part of Lebanon to flex its muscles and possibly become a major player in the region and, inter alia, in the war on terrorism.
Muhammad Fneish, a parliamentary deputy for the Hizballah parliamentary bloc, told the 10-16 March edition of the Egyptian weekly "Al-Ahram" that: "We are neither with the opposition nor with the pro-Syria forces," he said. "We stand on a middle ground and are thus supported by the majority of the Lebanese people," Fneish said.
