        COURSE GOALS
In the past 15 years, no part of the world map has changed more than the region of
Eurasia formerly covered by the Soviet Union and its allies. The course will offer
an overview of geographical, or "place-based," studies of the former "Socialist"
Bloc (once dominated by the USSR), including natural and human resources,
historical geography, ethnic and religious divisions, environmental questions,
and economic and political organization. The course will not simply cover
present-day Russia and Eastern Europe (or more properly, East-Central Europe).
The course will cover the 15 former republics of the Soviet Union,
the former members of the Warsaw Pact and the former Yugoslav Federation
(see list below ). Each student will closely examine one of these countries

Gregory (Grigory) Ioffe Professor of Geography
I was born and raised in Moscow, Russia. In 1974, I graduated from Moscow State University where I majored in Economic Geography. In terms of my training and perspective, which includes viewing reality through the prism of spatial trends, e.g., center-periphery gradients, and their statistical explanation, I owe much to Yuri Medvedkov , my Ph D advisor, and to several other Russian-trained colleagues, particularly to Mikhail Krylov, Dmitry Lukhmanov, Andrei Treivish, and Zhanna Zayonchkovskaya. As a human geographer, I spent my formative years at the Moscow-based Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences. At the time I worked there (1980-1989), the Institute's Department of Economic and Social Geography was the best place one could possibly imagine for creative pursuits, contacts, and cross-pollination of ideas. I am well traveled in the former USSR. I visited 13 out of 15 of its former republics and all economic regions of Russia from Kaliningrad in the west to Chukotka in the east and from Chechnya and N. Ossetia in the south to Murmansk in the north. I spent many weeks in field trips in the so-called glubinka , the outlying rural areas of Central Russia, where the sense of remoteness induced by poor roads and general neglect belies these areas' proximity (100-150 km) to major urban clusters. I am also well traveled in Europe where I visited 22 countries and lived in some of them for weeks and months at a time, especially in Poland, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Hungary

July 23, 2003 The hunt for Saddam Hussein's sons has culminated in a fatal gun battle; and much is being made of the dramatic final moments. Beyond the roar of the guns however, what often makes such an attack successful, is the stealthy work of intelligence officers and their sources. This is the shadowy world of whispered secrets, hidden alliances, and sudden betrayals that can mean the difference between military success and failure. And no one knows that world better than the spies who worked through the coldest days of the Cold War. Oleg Kalugin is one of them. A retired KGB major general, he was once head of the KGB's worldwide foreign counter-intelligence operations and spent much of his time working the streets of Washington, D.C., spying on America. His criticism of the KGB for lawlessness, cronyism, and arbitrary rule eventually resulted in him being convicted of treason in his home country. No wonder he now lives primarily in the United States. As he walks into my studio he has the smooth, easy bearing of a confident businessman; or perhaps it is the slick veneer of a seasoned political operative. His face is warm and welcoming; or cold and appraising. His eyes sparkle with mischief; or maybe malice. In other words, he is a consummate spy: appearing to be whatever he wishes, and moving the truth like the queen in three-card monte.
